Winter Lecture Series 2023: What the Ground Lay Bare: Archeology at Little Round Top and Devils Den
Gettysburg National Military Park has been rehabilitating both the Devil's Den as well as the Little Round Top. Archeologists have been conducting metal detector sweeps of areas where ground disturbance was anticipated. The archeological findings have the potential to shed light on the activities of individuals during and immediately following the fight. The program will highlight some of the current findings. This coupled with firsthand narrative accounts allows the park to enhance our understanding and interpretation.

I would love to see more on battlefield archeology. Both on the Gettysburg battlefield and others
Interesting information. This was a good opportunity to conduct the survey. Thank you for sharing.
A Sharps bullet doesn’t really have anything to do with “sharpshooters” as the metal detectorist states. It was fired from a Sharps Carbine and were primarily used by Cavalry

Yeah that was a pretty bad mistake.
Well done guys! Thank you
Enjoyed the talk thank you!!!
Very interesting! Thank you for posting this.
I'm pleasantly surprised to find this video. While on my first trip to Gettysburg several years ago, I asked a park ranger guide while on a tour what he knew about any archaeology that had been conducted on the battlefield. He said archaeology has never been done at Gettysburg and it will never ever be done at Gettysburg. And the look he gave me was basically how dare I even entertain such a question. It was really bizarre.

I find it pretty bizarre as well and I have yet to hear a good argument as to why a certain, albeit limited, amount of archeology shouldn't be done by the park service in certain areas. I can't imagine a better way to honor hallowed ground than to learn from it. Bullets, buttons, etc. can reveal significant mysteries about troop locations and tell stories that those men wanted told. I think it's an absurd policy that will hopefully change after the Little Round Top rehab.

@@willtosch5732 Excellent point

I thought this was going to be awesome.

I don't know. The audio seems ok to me but I will agree that the third speaker Steve could have been a bit more on the energetic and enthusiastic side
Just because someone is good at what they do, doesn't always mean that they're good at communicating what they do. Another speaker should've been given the information and handled the presentation.

Someone once told me you should keep quiet if you don't have something positive to say, or you sound like a complaining, whiney jackass.

Since he is contracted by the government, he’s likely obligated to also present. Unfortunately, it’s not known how someone will perform until they do. He seemed very nervous. He did okay once he got a good reaction from the crowd. Sometimes that’s all it takes to loosen up. This would have been a good opportunity for a more junior ranger.

In fact, I'm happy these guys sound like scientists and not zealots. Their work makes it possible for the rest of us to get to giddy about history.

He sounds fine to me. They aren’t stand up comedians except for Matt Atkinson lol.
Fantastic subject matter poorly executed. They should be referred to as projectiles NOT ammunition...ammunition is the entire component (Projectile, powder, paper/twine) a little.rehearsal on the part of the presenters would have done wonders. LIDAR mapping would have been useful. On a more positive note,at least they are preserving the sight from erosion.
Last speaker was not as knowledgeable as i was lead to believe being in charge of the Archeological work. His presentation was not very polished for someone in his position of responsibility.
Did he say the pictures of the New York monument excavation show that the monument was literally built above and on top of the stone wall that the New York soldiers used during battle?
