Great Riddles in Archaeology Lecture Series: Ötzi the Iceman

Dr. Thomas Tartaron
February 1, 2012
In 1991, two German tourists discovered a frozen body emerging from the melting ice of a glacier in the Alps along the Italian-Austrian border. Although it was initially believed to be a modern corpse, it quickly became apparent that the body was quite ancient, mummified naturally in the frozen environment. The discovery set off a frenzy of examinations and testing, as well as a series of disputes about the discovery and ownership of the mummy, Great and even claims of a "mummy's curse." Nicknamed "Ötzi" after the Ötz Valley in which he was found, the male mummy has been dated to approximately 5,300 years ago. Dr. Thomas Tartaron, Assistant Professor of Classical Studies, University of Pennsylvania, recounts the story of Ötzi's discovery and subsequent investigation, separating fact from fiction.

The hypothesis that who ever shot him pulled out and recovered the arrow shaft but didn't take the valuable axe and other arrows is pure nonsense. More likely he survived initially to flee and hide and at some point pulled out the shaft himself which led to greater blood loss and he died alone with his treasured belongings.

My 2 cents says that there was a fight between Otzi's group and the Austrian clan (apparently they were near a clan territorial border.) Otzi's group won and ran off or killed the others but our guy was wounded in the process (arrow and skull fracture.) For some reason they chose to leave Otzi, maybe his wounds and those of his compatriots wouldn't permit his being moved? So they hid him and were going to come back but a blizzard hits, as they do year round there. This might account for the no pillaging of his way cool stuff that anyone would want, then and now! My question-has there been a wider survey of the general area to try to find evidence of this battle?

Those markings will most likely have the following possible meanings. 433 is the number. It might be interpreted as 334. I am going to brainstorm as to all the possibilities: He may have been owned by some other more powerful individual, and he may have been given the number 334, or 433. It may have something to do with a rank in the social order. It may have something to do with him having tracked and killed certain game. Such a social status would allow him to hunt with others having the same skill level. Each of the deer you killed could be the first number (4) the second number may be the humans you killed in defending your tribe (3), and the last number may indicate something like the number of children you have. It may have more to do with what you can prove to others, like how we use background checks, moreso than anything he needs to remember.

I just don't understand why this people really want to say that ötzi had some status or wealth, that is just an idea from this "modern world". • @Chief2Moon

Gizelle Schaffner I think the idea is that would have been so early in the copper age that they figure anyone with a copper ax must have been of high status, influence or wealthy...simply because of the extreme rarity of such an object directly associated with datable organic materials.

How do people know he was not a solider and part of a battalion or clan during an ancient fight? This may have been a retreat or a victory as they left an area of battle (Otzi didn‘t make it.) Perhaps this is why his arrows were almost all spent with no tips on them. Save a couple arrows while on the move for food or emergency situations.

The 'unfinished arrow' without the arrowhead that was found propped up near Otzi must have been the arrow that was used to shoot him. Think about it... Above theory seems the most logical answer to me

Many times people carried unfinished arrows with them to complete themselves during the evening hours, after a meal, before retiring for the night. There have been many accounts of Native Americans that did this. Finishing these for himself saved him on the "cost" of purchase/trading for completed arrows. When hunting or battle arrows were lost, broken, ect. and replacements are needed to sustain life.

Well, you are looking at it like a guy in the here and now. Back then he could have been done in by a pure Stone Age hunter who didn't like the farmers moving in and crowding people, so maybe the killer didn't know and appreciate the copper axe. Or the killer could be superstitious about the "spirits" in items taken from someone he killed taking revenge, so he left them there. Or the killer may have already been injured/wounded/loaded down with other valuable gear, etc. and just couldn't carry off anymore stuff...especially if a storm was moving in and he was caught at 11,000 feet and needed to get down. Getting caught up high by a spring time storm without any real shelter is chancy business even now.

I believe the Arrow in him was one of his... In a spill fall his Arrows/Arrow fell out of the quiver landed below and in his fall in turn he landed on one... at the time the area was a small pond the gear drifted to the ponds edge near where it was found... If I would not have seen this almost exact scene almost happen as a teen hunting with a friend...He slipped fell into a awaiting field of Arrows most pointing up since they fell out of the quiver nock first My buddy was lucky was to my right he turned as he fell and landed on his side and back with his left arm across his neck Sound familiar ... I would not mention this theory I am not a scientist(I was a SME For A SERE school for 10 years) being a lifetime woodsman I will throw it out here For what its worth... Has the birch resin on the point In the body been matched with any remnants of arrows in his quiver? It seems the resin survived out side the body in the Quiver would not it last incased in the Body as well as the inner bark or sinews used to bind I plan to climb Mount Whitney as a 50 birthday treat in Otzi styled Kit that I am replicating it will be the third time and a tribute to this Man and a Time and People the shot was way too long if it was closer it would of went clean through if the draws are as much as they say... he fell on a arrow Not very romantic but its what I think happened... Mountaineers evolved not to carry arrows for a reason ...

I thought of that, too. In mountainous terrain, it's a possibility. But this guy was 45 with evidence of being very experienced at exactly what he was doing. It's good policy to NOT carry big pointy things when traversing difficult geography, but is sometimes an acceptable risk when it's the only food in winter. I don't work in an ER, but the position of the arrow entry and defensive hand wounds cast doubt on the tumble/arrow wound theory....for me, anyway. Of course, this IS the Alps and if he was pursuing game or being pursued, and took a long fall, then maybe.

Im am relived Otzi was not grabbed up and claimed and burt as in another example we could have learn a lot about these times... I'm disappointed by the video -- I didn't learn anything I didn't already know after watching five full length specials right here in KZread. I would have loved a little insight and new revelation about this amazing archaeological find, but, based on the lecture and rather unimpressive Q&A, I literally could have delivered this talk myself.

The book of Enoch says the fallen Nephilium angels taught the mixing of antimony with brass to make bronze for weapons, this happened before the flood. This would move the bronze age back to 3500 - 4000 BC

Why didn't they teach them iron smelting? Is it related to the fact that yhwh cannot defeat chariots of iron? Can we leave the theology away from history and science, please? It generally doesn't bear the weight of critical scrutiny or tangible evidence.

From the point of view of what I believe, I do not agree with you -- but it takes a courageous person to write that, so I am very proud of you. Because if that were what I believed, I would have been too afraid to speak of it. If I were asked for my opinion , I would say that Deus Faber literally invented evolution, and that disagreement between scientists and people of faith itself results from the stratagems and devices of Satan, wherein Satan does not wish us to see that one can follow both paths at the same time, such problems can be reconciled. For example, that those first inscribing the Bible wrote down what God revealed to them WITHIN THEIR LIMITED ABILITY TO UNDERSTAND WHAT GOD EXPLAINED TO THEM, that they did not fully understand nor wish to admit how difficult all the revealed instructions were, whereby over time there occured more an more misunderstandings of what was written, sacreligious censorship and revision of sacred texts, etc.

Or, with the application of Occam's Razor, we can assume the far more likely scenario that he was the great grandson of a person who existed.
