Winter is Coming! Preparing for an Approaching Snowstorm, Milling Lumber, Window Trim
An approaching snow storm hastens my efforts to weatherproof my log cabin and prepare my homestead for winter projects. I mill some lumber and timbers at my sister's house and then move my sawmill to a convenient spot beside the cabin and drag logs next to it so I can saw them over the coming weeks. To complete the weatherproofing of the cabin, I trim the front door and the windows, allowing for settling by installing a sliding top trim piece, something I'll replace with something more substantial and attractive at a later date.

I started watching you when you were still building the first cabin. It's amazing to me that out of a bad situation and the heartbreak when we all learned you would have to start over that it would be a blessing in disguise. You learned from the first build and have truly expanded and mastered the art of building not only a functional cabin, but an even more esthetically pleasing cabin compared to the first one. So glad to see you this far along just in time for winter.

Yah, I think with the first cabin it was more of a 'bolt hole', a place to get away to that ultimately evolved to become a long-term homestead. As sad as the fallout from that situation was, it has turned into a blessing in disguise because all the lessons Shawn learned there is allowing him to create his ideal homestead now.

there's a reason for that. The purpose of this one was vastly different than the other one. This is intended for long-term home for a family, not some temporary man-escape cabin the other was originally intended to be.

Shawn ….. this year because of your input at age 75, the two of us canned enough tomatoes, pickles, salsa, corn relish and poor mans honey (it is made from the petals of the dandelion) for a whole years worth of goodie! We also planted potatoes and tomatoes for fresh eating, thank you for motivating us!

You can make wonderful, tasty flower syrup from dandelion flowers, which is also very healthy and vegan. Today you are rich, if you have such stuff around you, not poor. ;) I've experimented with different recipes and also made a rather bitter extract from the dandelion roots, but it's excellent for lowering blood pressure. Try yourself to control your blood pressure daily at first in the morning and you will see the positive effects already with a daily tablespoon of the flower sirup. Dandelion flowers are best harvested in the morning when the yellow petals are still about a third closed on the inside. Then they hold on to all the pollen. Simply pull the flower upwards away from the stem using the fingers. At home you then cut off the rest of the stem and four of the eight green sepals with scissors. It is cleaned dry, do not wash the flower. You don't have to pluck the yellow leaves individually either. I think recipes in which the blossoms cook for a long time are less good, I prepare a raw cane sugar syrup that is not too thick, season it with vanilla or whatever else I would like to have with, then I add the blossoms and only let them boil two or three minutes, then let them cool down in the syrup before seperating with a fine metal strainer. Like this I try to preserve as many of the valuable dandelion components as possible.

Hello Shawn and Cali from Australia! Your surroundings have changed quickly as winter creeps in fast! The cabin is coming along nicely and is looking beautiful! No matter what there is always jobs to be done, you have come a very long way quite fast and I am sure you will never slow down, you are a very hard working and inspiring man! I like to watch you work. The cabin looks fabulous. Thanks for the loon fix! Love it! Yep, I'm the loon lady. LOL
Film the storm please!!!!! We wanna see snow!!! Even if it's just 15 minutes!
One thing I appreciate about Shaun is that he keeps his videos real. At around 9:50 minutes of the video he dinked the beam against the mill but still kept it in the video. He keeps it real, and motivates me because I recognize I’m not perfect. With that said I still think he is living the perfect life even if he, or should’ve I say we, aren’t perfect. Love you Shaun. You inspire men like me in their late 20s to be self reliant. Thank you sir. You have my respect.
It's good to see your first light dusting of snow, Shawn, and seeing those most Canadian of birds, Loons, is very pleasant too. Watching you mill planks, beams, uprights etc in preparation by charring and for your next project is very satisfying too, though I hope that you will have some fair-weather during the next months for the outdoor kitchen construction too..
I'm not one of the viewers who watch every second with full focus. I skip through many parts of Shawn's videos, but I like to feel that I'm up to date on Shawn's projects. And when the cabin is done, I love to watch the food-making, and the cozy times in front of the fireplace as a snow storm ravages the forest. Thank you for all your videos, Shawn.

Shawn, you talking and smiling at the end of the video says a lot, sure theres much more to do, but the stress of having that cabin built, roofed and trimmed and caulked in before winter must be a huge stress reliever for you. Now you have time to hunt in the mornings, and doing the things you love in the wilderness. the place looks fantastic, what you have accomplished single handedly is nothing short of astounding, that cabin looks like a work of art, I used to build them with lincoln logs as a kid, everybody had em when we were young, the scale and size of those logs you hoisted up is truely impressive, all the best to you and your family for the coming holidays, sir, be well.
I love that you have such a balanced existence! Taking time to enjoy the outdoors and continue working on your wonderful looking cabin! Quite a life you have made for you and your family! Cheers, Sandy& Andy

Its so sweet watching Cali run back with that Orange toy in her mouth. With every step you took rolling that log, she took a step too. A dog's day of fun is never ending. Hope she doesn't stay out too long with ice on her paws. The cabin looks absolutely awesome.

Such precious and BEAUTIFUL lumber! Been watching your videos for only a few months now and just can't enough of them. Love to see your skills at building just about anything.
Been watching since first cabin I thoroughly enjoyed everyone. This cabin and surrounding is beautiful. Always was my dream that you fulfilled. When I retired I wanted away from the city, but limited finances and old age I couldn't foresee building a cabin myself. I did move to a rural area in BC and bought an old inexpensive house ($100,000) almost 100 years old. It's well built with old craftsmanship, milled lumber and well insulated but I'm not off grid, nearest shopping and medical an hour away. I love the surrounding peaceful scenery and wildlife, deer and bear run through my property and the odd cougar and bobcat. I'm surrounded by lakes, rivers and streams. Presently a foot of snow and below zero. I garden, hunt and fish and preserve food and have room for family if needed. So, in some ways I did fulfill a dream! You were my inspiration to leave the city!
You have done a wonderful job so far 😊I hope you realize what a good job you been doing - your work ethic is wonderful 🤩 Take care - can’t wait to watch next week 👍🏻

Cali seems to enjoy the winter more each year. 🥰
Provides incredible videos, fantastic workmanship in the process, great dog!...the "negatives" being as he touched on. I owned a cabin in the "UP" of Michigan, yes beautiful. But the winters are so harsh, bitter cold, large snowfalls make it difficult to enjoy. The days are short, limited sun etc., yes a weekend is fine but 6 months of it NOT. The summer arrives and you are battling the "bugs". Again, incredible video and craftsmanship, just awesome!
Yeah, like many other below, Ive also been following your awesome journey for a long time. Keep rocking Shawn! 🙏🏻👍🏻

It was a sad moment down here in Florida after the hurricane or any hurricane for that matter... with the growing lumber shortages around the country, the fallen trees in the recent storm were all destroyed.... a lot of those fallen were monster trees that would've made for some really good lumber
I would definitely screen in the outdoor kitchen. With screens it would make for a nice place to sit and relax during the bug season.

I live in Northwestern Ontario and we also have gotten that much. Yet just 1 hour from me a city on Lake Superior only got 3 inches of snow. the joy and fulfillment of winter ready chores along with a nice fresh breeze, nothing can beat this cold brew mix
Our 'Hunt Cabin' on top of the mountain on our farm was much smaller and simpler, with bunk beds for eight, kero lamps and an ancient, two plate wood stove of dubious origin that the Devito brothers took over to do all the cooking. But the best idea we had was to build a 'stove wood shed' extending from the back door. No more slogging through snow drifts for a sled full of splits, plus there was shelving for 'freezer' storage. It wasn't insulated, but it was snow and rain free. You didn't realize how much you smelled of wood smoke and kero fumes till you came back to the farm house and Mom yelled at us for stinking up the parlor! I hope you will have as many years of good memories with your family in the finished 'Log Palace' as we did in our drafty 'Log Hut'.
