Winter cycling overshoes Vs Dedicated winter shoes: what's best for you?

Спорт

It's that time of year again when the weather turns grim; the roads get covered in grime, the heavens open up, and the chilly winds make riding a little less enticing. Or at least if you live in the northern hemisphere! For those of you in the upside-down part of the world where the sun is now warming your cockles, may I advise you to bookmark this video and return in six months? As I'm about to delve into the world of keeping your little pinkies toasty. It's overshoes Vs winter boots.

Winter boots win it for me. Life's too short to faff around with overshoes. If you wear you're tights over the gaiter then water doesn't get in. Need water repellent tights of course.

Thanks Dave, all good points. SPD compatible boots all the way for temps below 9c. Tights/rain pants fit comfortably over the top of the shoe to keep out cold and wet. Overshoes do not close properly at the ankle and calf; they become points of constriction and never remain zipped. So I gave up on them and finally invested in boots. For temps 4c and below, I switch to a true thermal sock and chemical toe warmers as needed. I've gone from always suffering from cold feet to happy toes at last.

Wintershoes for me whenever it's beneath 10°c, they are just so much better! Dave u should take a look at Northwave overshoes, the cuff is much higher and are tighter, even better than overshoes for rain!

Definitely Spatz. Pull on like a sock and roll over shoes & fasten underneath. So much easier to put on compared to alternatives which have to be pulled over the shoe past cleats and then zipped up the back.

I live in California, so I like layering. It might get up to 15C in the afternoon and then down to close to 5C crossing over the hills at night. I can stash overboots in my rear bag and put them on when I get cold. I tried a pair of winter boots a couple rides and they were too hot in the afternoon.

Bought both Lake and 40 below winter boots over the years and ultimately they are just expensive and don't really work when it gets below freezing. By far the best option for real cold is flat pedals and a set of regular boots

I've got winter SPD boots, but I'm a wuss when it comes to cold toes, and if it wasn't for the lack of a zip at the back, the Spatz looked like they could be the winner for me to stick over winter boots to keep toes warm on the coldest days. Looks like I'm going to have to give the tin foil a try! But they look like they'll work well with standard SPD shoes without wearing out as quick as others when walking about a bit.

Would be +1 for winter boots. Been cycling in winter with snow in booties before and they are not too bad as long you don't start to walk. Snow and mud gets between the show and bootie and sooner or later holes start to appear in bootie. Separate winter shoes are much nicer. Easier to put on, but must take care in rain,as Dave said, water seeps from the top

Great question. I use both. I have never had cold feet in my Fizik Artica boots, but they are prone to flooding in persistent rain and are road-pedal specific. I have ordered Spatz Roadman overshoes for gravel riding and wet days.

Sorry Laurent, I struggled for a better way of wording that; My pair are the SPD-SL model so no use with SPD cleats. The point being some overshoes can fit either pedal system but you'd need two pairs of Artica boots to achieve the same result.

I use a pair of Lake 304 winter boots with Vaude Long Gaiters over the top for winter gravel riding. The gaiters not only keep the water out, but they also keep the boots cleaner. The gaiters are inexpensive and easy to replace. The boots are quite expensive, so it’s nice to keep them in good shape as long as possible. For road riding in the winter, I use a Pearl Izumi thermal shoe cover with an Enduro waterproof shoe cover over the top. Feet stay reasonably dry, and definitely warm.

Good question; if it's cold but dry, then it's winter boots. However, in the North West of England, it's normally wet & windy, so it's usually overshoes.

  • @ivarbrouwer197
    @ivarbrouwer1973 жыл бұрын

Decathlon has a type of overshoes that need to be pulled over the shoes before putting the shoe on. They are difficult, but warm, sweaty and water proof, more then any normal overshoes. Ideal for SPD, I think, not so much for SPD SL. I have some north wave winter shoes, they aren’t all that warm but a little bigger inside which allows me to wear double socks, this might be the greatest gain. My normal regiment with normal road shoes: a thin pair an normal pair of socks, then a pair of old socks with a hole cut in over the shoes and a pair of overshoes on top. If it’s rainy a plastic bag inside the shoe, will make it sweaty but toasty. Merino wool socks a point of interest also. Prevent leakage in the shoes by putting your leg warmers over the shoe, not in them.

I ride in Belgium and the enemy is water rather than low temperatures. While I can deal with wet feet after a weekend ride, I can't when commuting. Never mind pulling on waterlogged boots for the ride back. The only thing that's clear to me is that it's apparently virtually impossible to design a winter boot that will really keep your feet dry. I'm on a pair of Sidis now and they hold up when it rains a bit but once yo need to factor in spray, heavy rain...forget it. It always come through. I tried spatz. Yes, they work but as said in the review, they're a goddamn pain to put on and take off. Also, the kevlar is nice but you'll be tugging a lot on that neoprene part and mine lasted just one year during which I wore them perhaps 15 times. That works out awfully expensive and is not ann experiment that will be repeated. I'm currently leaning toward a winter boot but whenever I do research and start digging it transpires that they're water resistant, not proof, or that they're too low with water coming in through the cuff, or all but impossible to put on.

I've got fiziik artica boots and they are excellent but later i saw Northwave do a boot that can take sl or spd cleats which would have been ideal. i also have some sealskin brand overshoes for gravel but hard to get on and a zip failed very quickly so not great value in the end

In all honesty I wish mountaineering boot companies would create clipless boots. I use Salewa crow GTX mountaineering boots ( goretex) here in Canadian winter where it can get down to -40 degrees Celsius and they keep my feet warm and dry. After about -20 degrees Celsius over 3 or 4 hours my feet do get cold but these boots are awesome and obviously I’m using flat pedals with studs.

Winter boots for me as I find overshoes just don’t keep my feet warm. To stop water running down my legs and into the boots, I have cut the cuffs off a pair of black rubber gloves which fit tightly around the shin and then go over the top of the boot. Water runs down outside of them and keeps feet way drier for longer. My boots are Mavic and I contacted them about integrating such a gater into their boots and they said they’d pass it on to their Development team. Never heard anything back so don’t know if they’ll incorporate it in future designs.

One thing i think you have missed here (illustrated by the hole in the toes of your sportful overshoes) is longevity, mainly in the toe of overshoes / toe covers... I go though numerous premium toe covers and (used to go though, i tired endura, seal skin, castelli etc) at least 1 set of overshoes per year and now have winter boots, that last season after season (think this is there 3rd year and no sign of giving up), and just buy the cheapest toe covers money can buy safe in the knowledge they will only last a couple of months.

Winter boots for me all the way. A real revelation the first time I tried them - you could actually ride in the Belgian winter AND have warm and dry feet - who knew!?! I bought a cheap pair of Shimano RW5 road boots and this is my third winter using them. Only cost about as much as the most premium pair of overshoes (about €110 if I remember well) and have a very snug cuff so I haven't had the leakage issues you have had with your Scott's.

Hi I am forever chasing the holy grail of warm toes and am intrigued by your comment about not layering. On Saturday I wore a normal pair of socks, then a pair of thick socks, then my winter boots (NW Raptor GTX) and finally a pair of Altura waterproof overshoes. And still my toes were frozen at the 2 hour mark. In all other areas of cycling we are told to layer up. So how does layering up with shoes NOT work? All tips and advice gratefully received - nothing worse than frozen toes when you're still an hour or more away from home. Thanks.

You need to have a layer of air to warm up. It's like making a mini micro climate in the shoe. You can't do that with a jersey as your body temp fluctuates while rolling along, sprinting or climbing. With jackets and jerseys you need to disperse the moisture as it'll get you cold. Hope this helps. Let us know how you get on - dave

I purchased the Spatz 'Pro 2' Overshoes from the spatzwear.com website. The first time I put them on, the struggle to pull them over the top of my Shimano SPD-SL cleats tore a hole about 2cm wide in the Spatz Pro 2 overshoes neoprene, even though I was careful in pulling them up, and I ordered the size recommended on the website for my size 42 shoes. It was such a struggle getting them on that I had sweat pouring down my brow. They also managed to loosen and dislodge the cleats on one side. I also purchased the Spatz 'Toez' Silicone Toe Warmers. These also lasted only one use, falling apart due to large tears forming after the most basic usage. If you buy Spatz expect them to be single-use throw-away items, which is pretty expensive considering I paid £141.97 GBP for them both (shipped). Buyer beware.

Don t believe it . I own 45nrth japanthers, sidi boots and shimano boots. Sidi are waterproof but not that warm, shimano are toasty but not very good in wet. 45nrth are both warm and waterproof but a little klunkier - still my pick when it -10 f or deluge conditions. The one thing they all have in common - you need to order a size up in order to fit a pair of merino wool socks. Oh yeah, be smart buy the mtb/spd versions.i ve commuted for over six years every day in western massachusetts, lots of snow, below zero mornings, and ice. Keep the rubber (and studded) side down. Good luck.
