    Thanks for the brute honesty. I tried to use my spring/summer waterproof boots in the winter with two layers of wool socks I couldn't find any solutions while cutting corners. All I had to do was buy insulated boots that were built for the job, and it completely solved the issue. I do only ride platform pedals in bad weather though, some winter cleated shoes would be nice so I could use my power meter.

    I do weekly 40 mile rides on my Mountain bike comfortably down to 10 degrees F. Lake winter boots, hotronic toe warmers, and dogwood designs Pogies/over gloves. Foxwear custom made outer garments work - pants and jacket. Need to run tri flow spray on your chain and shifting pivot points and low temp grease on your crank and bearings. For your rear drive hub you will need Chris King ratcheting system with tri-flow lubricant or your will lose all forward drive below 20 degrees F. Put GE silicone sealant around all spoke nipples to keep salt from entering the inner rim. Salt intrusion into the inner rim will split the inner rim in half after a few months of winter riding.

    SpinShoeGuru, you nailed it! We get what we pay for and I agree with you: "Throw out the Cycle Shoe Covers!" I live in Michigan and the winter months are bitterly cold! My cycle shoes are vented throughout and they invite the cold air in without hesitation. I'm now in the market for a pair of winter cycle boots. I'm hoping to find a pair that will fit my EE width. Thanks for making this video. You did an awesome job!

    If you can't find a "true winter shoe" that fits, you're left with no choice but thick socks and booties. Tried all and returned. Not enough volume across the instep, constrictive and harder to get on than booties. I appreciate good kit but sometimes the market simply does not support your needs.

    The winter boots I’ve seen online are for 0-20°F ... which is less than freezing for those of us in “not-USA”! It doesn’t get that cold where I live, but we DO get rain rain rain and cold winds (5-15°C) in winter. What do you think? Would a winter boot be too hot for my ‘cold but not freezing’ weather ?

    I have winter shoes and still without proper care my feet become ice cubicles... 1 - Dedicated winter shoes offer more space: double socks becomes possible. (Merino wool) With two pairs of socks, put tinfoil over you toes, maybe if whet a small plastic sack. (Will get sweaty, but warm) 2 - cut a hole into a pair of old sports socks and pull them over your shoes, this really works! 3 - put overshoes over the outer-sports-socks When dry, dedicated winter shoes are not needed, if your shoes can accommodate 2 pairs of socks without fitting too tight: the problem can be no circulation due to the shoes being too tight.

    you probably should have mentioned that winter shoes need to be a couple of sized larger than summer shoes. smaller shoes constrict blood flow resulting in limited circulation down to the toes.

    Why is everybody's favorite reply "I use flats"? They say it like it is some badge of honor not to clip in. Of course warm shoes and clipping in is the right way.

  • @SpinShoeGuru

    @SpinShoeGuru

    I agree. For short trips or commuting then it's obviously fine to simply use a warm boot and flats but for rides where real distance and time is a factor above and beyond the normal, then clipping in is best.

    It's unfortunately true. I'm sure you could try and purchase a decent used pair online somewhere...? The point of the video though is to try and convince those who continually purchase new covers that there is a better way. The barrier to entry can be high. Best luck.

    There are several things to consider. Are your shoes too tight? Perhaps loosen them when wearing a thicker sock. Does the toe box (interior of the forefoot area inside the shoe itself) allow for room when wearing a thicker sock? It should. If not, that's causing a lack of circulation of both heat and blood flow thus causing your foot to be cold. Essentially, you need enough room in your shoe to allow for a thick insulating sock while not choking off blood flow to your toes. If you have room to wiggle your toes comfortably you should be good. You can try a winter insole (lake makes a good one) to help insulate the bottom of your foot from the metal plate where your cleat screws into. That metal plate will get COLD. You can try putting some aluminum foil underneath your insole to help block cold and reflect heat into the shoe itself. Good luck.

    Try toe warmers (like the iron-based hand warmers that heat up when exposed to air). They go right in your boot and keep your foot warm all day.

    Nice in theory but all winter booties I've used were crap or atleast didnt work for me. I couldnt care less what shitty saddle i sit on or if the saddle is actually a cactus but changes to the shoes are very problematic. My threshold is 380-400 watts and I ride 20h/week on average, thats quite a bit of mechanical wear and tear I've found changes to the footbed and cleats to be the single most invasive thing to bikefit - all attempts to change shoes to winterboots in the offseason resulted in orthopeadic issues and i had to revert back. Ive pretty much accepted dead feet and try to avoid true frostbite (happened only a couple of times) but i dont understand why companies dont just add a winter version of their shoes using the same footbed and sole etc....
