    I’ve been wearing a pair of Lake 303 boots for the past 3 or so years. I live in Western Washington, so not as extreme of low temps as Montana. I’ve found that what works best for me is the boots with a pair of Vaude long bike gaiters. I started out wearing the gaiters with the boots because, even though the boots are waterproof, water still gets in through the top (I can’t snug down the buckle/neoprene collar enough). The boots would get heavier as the ride went on, as the water didn’t have a way to drain out. The gaiters solved that problem but, I also discovered the gaiters help in keeping my feet warmer even when I don’t need them to keep water out. So, I think of it more as my winter cycling warm feet system...boots and gaiters. The only downside of the Vaude gaiters is the part of the toe cap that goes under the toe of the boot is a flimsy piece of cordura that does not hold up well to having to hike-a-bike. I reinforce that part with a couple layers of Gorilla tape.

I have supposedly winter SHIMANO XM9 SPD OFFROAD SHOES, but they, like all Japanese shoes, are very narrow. For Japanese ballerinas. Just like Adidas, Salomon. Although Keen, HOKA and Asics release shoes for wide feet, but the sellers do not know about it.

    As a winter cyclist in Minnesota I just don't see the appeal of specialized boots like these. I wear high-quality but significantly more useful Sorel winter duck boots with flat pedals. Clips will fill with ice and snow, the last thing you want to deal with when you're out in the cold. The soles of specialty-boots are usually stiffer and thus not good for hiking about in the outdoors, or even in the city. So they're optimized just for your time on the bike. But a regular winter boot can do it all! And then you don't need two pairs of boots...

  • @PathLessPedaledTV

    @PathLessPedaledTV

    I'm new to winter and am doing the best I can. I rode in Sorels last year as well as some winter Columbia hiking boots, both did fine while walking but not so much while riding. Frozen toes within an hour. I probably won't use the clips at all, since like you, I don't like dealing with them in the snow and ice. I'm giving these cycling specific ones a go, because maybe they do something different or have insulation in optimized places? Don't know. That's why I'm trying them out. Of the two, the Wolvhammer actually has a walkable sole. Prob, no more stiffer than the Columbia boots I used last winter. The OMW are definitely too stiff for longer foot expeditions.

    "Tight" is not something you want in a winter boot or shoe--they should fit, but not be sloppy. You aren't sizing for rock shoes or even "normal" cycling shoes. Not only do you need room for socks / insulation (compressed insulation is useless insulation), but your feet need room to keep your circulation high in your extremities. Peripheral vasoconstriction in cold weather will already predispose you to having cold hands, feet, and extremities. I know many who ride in extreme cold (fat biking) that use flats w/pins, with their Baffins, Kamiks, or Sorrels.
