Winter City Stealth Camping in a Blizzard

What's good? Thanks for clicking on my video
In this one we'll be doing some winter stealth camping in my favorite spot during the tail end of a two-day blizzard. We will encounter extreme colds that can leave frostbite on exposed skin in minutes and cause death in under an hour without proper clothing.
Luckily for me I have the gear to survive a trip like this, but it didn't end up being very fun for me and I came very close to bailing not once but twice. It was the coldest camping trip I've ever experienced, and it was a surreal experience waking up to some of the most absolute frigid temperatures I can remember in recent times. As I was sleeping sometimes there would be a very small gap that allowed cold air to seep in, and it was somewhat incredible to be able to easily feel where to close the gap and feel the warmth begin to increase. When it's that cold, the cold creeps in anywhere it can. Looking at all the frost covering everything coupled with the -15F temperature made me not want to get out of my sleeping bag. However, if I wanted to leave there is only one way out.

    My man - be careful. As a fellow Iowan, this cold weather is no joke. Glad you got through it without getting frostbite or worse. You're a mad man... but maybe opt for a cabin next time!

    That was one of the most brutal cold blast/blizzards i think we've had here in iowa, for awhile. Could definitely tell you struggled through it, but you toughed it out. You definitely have to love doing this to subject yourself to these conditions on purpose. Good job

    Dude it was so rough lol.. I learned a lot though. If I ever do something like this again I should in theory be much more prepared.. maybe even be warm.. I have some future ideas but idk if hot tent is the way for me or not. Still undecided

    That was the Peregrine Altai 0 Degree Sleeping Bag. Not super familiar with the brand tbh but I have nothing but good things to say about the sleeping bag. Especially for the price I paid for it. It was $200 two years ago, and while it’s does have some flaws the value to price ratio is exceptional and it’s served me well many times now. Appreciate the nice comment btw

    Thanks for going out into that weather this past weekend to make a video. On really cold trips like that, do you ever take along a backpacking propane stove to boil water/make food instead of using the wood stove?

  • @iowacampclimbhike6083

    @iowacampclimbhike6083

    5 ай бұрын

    No but your comment caught my attention because you have no idea how badly I wished I would have brought one.. technically I shouldn’t have had to but my main issue was I didn’t leave the house soon enough to give adequate time for firewood processing. The wood I carried in the backpack was far too large for my stove and I didn’t have an axe to chop it smaller with. It was too thick to baton. I was really banking on that wood and I was able to use almost none of it. This trip has made me think twice about packing an extra stove
