Windshield crack repair (17 inch)

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

My windshield got a big almost 35cm crack like the one on the video and at Carglass they told me it can not be fixed and needed glass replacement (700 euros). So I will try my luck with DIY repair kit I bought from the internet for 65 euros for big cracks. The seller provided me with a helpfull DVD of many instructional videos and I posted the one I am going to use.
I will come back with some results later...

    I knew that it could be done, but I was a bit of a skeptic with that long of a crack. That’s quite impressive. The only problem I’m having is that I can’t find a shop that will do it. All the shops I’ve contacted only want to replace which could be different then my JDM windshield.

There's a whole new meaning to a crack expander over there! I ended up with a black eye which has nothing to do with your brown eye! But alas Tonto I am back home all tucked up now.

    This came out pretty good, i would consider doing this on nostalgia cars or totally cars with no spare parts. I work in the autoglass business, but no insurance company will cover any repairs larger than an inch or two. Crack, def no no. To pay us the actual fee for doing this work above, would end up beeing what the deductable for an entire windshield swap would be. Thats true in Sweden / Norway anyway.

    FYI...The reason most glass companies won't repair cracks longer than 6" is because (or should be) because it is a structural issue. The windshields are part of the structure of your crash rating and must be full or as close to full strength as possible to protect you in an accident. So yeah, you can cosmetically improve the looks (somewhat) with this method, but it is still damaged. To each his own...be safe!

  • @JJ_GoBlue

    @JJ_GoBlue

    You are right. Best repairs are done with a vacuum (on rock damages which are your stars, bullseyes etc.) but that crack is so wide open there was no reason to use all that equipment. The resin and Mylar capping plastic would’ve done the job. When the crack is open enough to feel with a nail (as that one was) you could drop anything in there and it’d fill almost immediately.

    The reason why they where to replace the windshield is because, (I am a tech) after the crack is longer then a 6 inches (a bill note or dollar), the is a safety issue with repairing the windshield. the Resin after it cures becomes harder than glass. windshields are made to break a certain way, to much resin will alter this, and could honestly be a huge safety hazard.

    @@e.nicholelewis1561 Emily, it depends on the tech. I'm in Wichita Ks, I'm a player @ $75. Crack repair can be very smart. It all depends on where, how old, and so forth. The dollar bill rule is an invention of Safelite Auto Glass. I think it's funny that they use a dollar bill as the metric. Because really that's what it's all about the dollar bill they want to sell you a new windshield all the time and always. Search out a good windshield repair service in your area. ROLAGS is the standard (ANSI). Good luck dear.
