Rain-X Windshield Repair Kit on a Chip + Long Crack

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

July 31, 2023 Update - Crack has still not grown since original application - still looks exactly the same as in this video. Originally done in July 2020
Showed the application of the Rain-X 600001 Windshield Repair Kit on a 2019 Honda Pilot to repair a chip and a very long crack. Worked out pretty good, would recommend.

    A tip I learned from doing mine, is to have a helper apply some pressure to the good piece of glass to open up the crack on the other side, just ever so slightly. That allows the resin to really get in there and do its thing.

    Ok, was wondering but also afraid to do this. I can definitely feel my line crack up to a certain point. Then it feels like the crack is entirely inside the glass itself (can't feel it with fingernail from inside the car or outside.

    I did it 2 nights ago on my truck. Impact point had a foot long crack either side. I took a Q tip with resin putting pressure for a couple seconds all along the crack. Then, I ran the resin bead along it. I put about 6-8 pieces of film over it. I let it sit overnight in the garage, not just 20 min-1 hr. I removed the film, but didn’t scrape or clean. I let it sit for 8 hrs in 100 deg heat/sun. I then scraped excess off. Wiped it down. I can barely make out the crack! It worked. Amazing, and I never would’ve believed it. I’ve tried for 30 years on cracks for the 20 min-hr thing, and it never helped at all.

    A few more tips I want to add being that I did my own windshield in 2021 with a similarly long crack and it's held up since is that you can watch videos of professionals doing this with better tools but can use 2 or 3 of these cheaper plastic tools to do the same thing. Basically you'll want to use the bullseye dropper to shoot goop into the main chip then "wick" the resin along with a cue tip soaked in the same resin. Push and follow from behind and it pushes itself forward. With your spare 2 other resin injectors you'll use them to very very slightly open the crack a super little bit evenly from the other side of the windshield to help the resin flow through.

    The reason you're supposed to scrape it a 90° angle is to avoid pulling the resin out of the crack like you did at the chip. If you scrape it at a 90° angle you can avoid that

    I used this kit and I'm quite happy with the results too. I drilled a hole 1/8 inch from the end of the crack, in the top layer of glass only. I put an electric heater inside the van to heat up the glass since it was 50 in my garage. Then I let the glue flow into crack and followed the flow, just behind the flow, along the rest of the crack. I used reading glasses to help me see the flow into the crack. I followed the directions for the rest of the procedure. I parked outside to let it setup etc. The next day, after being parked outside, it seemed that the crack was even harder to see than on the first day after setting up. I don't know if the glue hardened and shrunk further but I'm even happier with the repair.

I called the dealership and they wanted to put a claim in to my insurance. But after watching your video and purchasing this product, I was able to fix a crack, which was more that 30ins. Just keep in mind… The windshield is an integral part of the safety of the car. If you have a crack that goes from one edge to the middle of the windshield that’s OKAY to fix, however… If it goes from one edge of the windshield to the other edge (any other edge) it greatly compromises the integrity of the windshield’s safety.

Installers doing something wrong, usually either out of ignorance of the job they WERE trained for, or willfully skipping steps while still clearing each vehicle through the station like nothing is wrong. Very hard to get competent employees at any station within the plant. After having worked here for so long, I've come to believe that many recalls are related to installers on the assembly line as opposed to true design issues, considering there are about 4000 people on each shift ( here on the night shift TONS of people like to drink while on the job as well ). Hey dude, ive seen this get done 100% cleared with same equipment, you have to use the suction device and grease the sides both sides 5-10 cm from crack and slowly drip resin and move suction as you go along, what will happen is the resin will fill the bullseye and line crack 100% with that pressure on it... you can also tap the glass inside to help resin flow inside....after few hours scrap and clear glass. hope this helps .

    To stop the crack, you need to drill a small hole (with a diamond bit) through the outer layer of glass at the end, or within a few mm of the crack. Either drill until you get to the plastic layer and stop, or drill nearly through the outer glass (im not sure exactly how thick it is) and just give the bottom of the hole a tap to break through to the plastic. Then you can apply the resin along the crack and in the new hole. The round hole kinda dissipates the cracking action because it's a void. The resin reduces the visibility of the crack and stops more dirt getting stuck.

    @beautgrainger147

    6 ай бұрын

    @@rayonwilliamssportsandfun2106 a laminated windscreen is two layers of glass with a plastic layer in the middle. If you have a crack on just the outer layer of glass you need to drill a hole at the end of, or just slightly ahead of the crack. The hole needs to be either all the way through - until the drill suddenly starts drilling deeper into the soft plastic layer, or you need to drill through most of the cracked outer layer (judge the depth in comparison to the thickness of the glass crack), then give it just enough of a hit in the bottom of the hole to do the final breakthrough. If the hole doesn't go all the way through, the crack may continue once the weather becomes changeable or cold. The hole is a stress release. You can drill the glass with a diamond bit for something like a Dremel. Btw, the cheap crack repair glue may work, or may not.. it needs to be applied in shade, and the glass pushed a bit from inside as you apply glue a bit at a time, making sure not to get ahead of the crack filling. It also needs to be done before the crack gets too old.. like within a week or two.. it can make the difference between being an obvious crack, or pretty much disappearing. I've got two bits of the same crack.. an old bit which I didn't drill deep enough or glue in time, and then the continued winter bit which was fresh and drilled deep enough.. the old didn't glue well and continued after a while, and the fresh bit glued invisibly, and stopped the crack.

Youd windshield may not be too expensive. Just to buy the glass windshield for my car would cost 81.00 dollars but I can't install it. To have someone else install it including the price of the windshield is 230.00 dollars. Not too bad.

    I'm going to try the diamond bit on the Dremel and this kind of kit from my local Napa. And my crack is almost the same. But I'm going to use my squeegee to get rid of the bubbles. I did tile and stone all of my body life. And anything ridged that has a crack in it needs the pressure released. So we always drilled a hole right in front of it. And most of the time it works. Great video, just try a squeegee next time. After drilling a needle size hole right in front of the crack. Usually Anything that your waiting for to dry or cure, from concrete to fiberglass, the slower it cures the stronger it will be when it finally drys. So don't rush the process, hot things expand/grow, and Cold things contract/shrink. Kerry Grant luvs mother earth and not plutocrats fracking narcissistic autocrats.

The vibrations from the sock egg vibrated the windshield enough so the resin would go into the crack. Has it spread at all since the repair? All the professional repairs have them drill a small hole at the end of the crack to create a bull’s-eye for the crack to go into so it stops the spread, I’m considering doing that, but it seems a little iffy having no experience “Purposely putting a bull’s-eye in my windshield”

  • @karljay7473
    @karljay74733 жыл бұрын

    I don't think you're going to deform the glass by screwing the pressure screw more, that's the key thing to how these work, you expand the glass by cooling it, then you pressure feed the resin in the larger crack, then as it warms up, it comes together and cures. I've got a 50 year old car that is very hard to get glass for, I'm going to try this out. My concern is that once you get an amount of resin in the crack, you'll be blocking future resin from getting all the way in. As far as expansion goes, you need to drill a tiny hole at the end of the crack, then fill that hole, that's how they do engine head repair, it stops the travel.

    The directions say to also use the razor blade to remove any glass fragments from the hole so the resin can fill it in fully. The reason the give you extra sheets is to reuse it later multiple times. I've had a bottle for 10 years and the resin is still good. I use a small nail to puncture the bottle opening for the resin to use it again and keep it all in a plastic bag in my tool chest. In one case, I had to do a second coat after the first to get areas where I didn't apply enough resin after pushing it down with the plunger.

    I repair windshield professionally. There’s a couple of things to consider when trying something like this: 1) the windshield is a safety component in the vehicle. It absorbs 20% of the cars weight in case of a roll over, it prevents passengers from being ejected in case of an accident, and prevents objects like tires or debris from flying into your vehicle. You want to make sure the structural integrity is intact so an improper repair can be costly in more than just money but safety. 2) using resins that aren’t designed for long cracks can fail over time, thus compromising the structural integrity of the windshield 3) in order to permanently stop a long crack from spreading you must properly drill into the windshield and tap a bullseye at the end of the crack. Drilling too deeply can damage the inside layer of the windshield (PVB) and compromise the structural integrity of the windshield. I’ve seen something like this done, even drilling a bullseye at the end, and within time it gave out. Safety first. Please refer to the Repair of Laminated Auto Glass Standard (ROLAGS) for more information on the safety of windshield repair. Every certified auto glass professional is familiar with ROLAGS as it’s the ultimate standard in the US. Please see the PDF files at the right of the screen on proper resin bonding and what constitutes a successful and failed repair. rolags.com/
