That thing was 26 years old at the time and all the ink is still in place on the keys. I have a Microsoft 4000 keyboard and the ink wore off the keys in less than a year and they don’t sell just the keys. And even trying to find decent decals as a replacement is impossible. Very frustrating that everything nowadays is just meant to be disposable rather than repairable.
@Frithgar
2 жыл бұрын
Why would anyone want to offer them for sale though? There wouldn't be sufficient market to make it viable in any way. You can get stencils and good paint and apply the lettering yourself, or even make your own stencils and do it that way.
@Killashandra111

@@Frithgar You seemed to miss the point. The point is that everything made nowadays is junk whereas stuff made 26 years ago was made to last.
@ge2719

@@Killashandra111 you want to look for double shot keys. The lettering isn't silk screened, it's injection moulded with two different plastics so the letter goes all the way through the key. Often with a clear plastic so back lit keyboards shine light through the letter. You should be able to find replacement double shot keys for your keyboard, just not from the manufacturer Or invest in a good mechanical double shot back lit keyboard. I've had the razer blackwidow elite now for several years, it works great.
@Killashandra111

@@ge2719 I really like the ergonomic split keyboard as it is easier on my wrists. Will most keys fit most boards? Don't need/want backlit but don't want the letters to wear off again.
@kanalisationerstellen

You should try the Sharkoon Purewrite Keyboard, it is really long lasting for a low price, and it is the flattest mechanical keyboard and the fastest i've ever typed on. It is comparable to a laptop keyboard, noisier yeah, but you have the letters that just shine through, and you have a metal case, every button is changeable the way you want it. There are many other good mechanical keyboards but none is that flat and has that quality for the price.
I love the old school windows branded keyboards with the board nice and space out. There is something very satisfying about tactile loud clicking keys when you type as well.

In the 2000s I was a teenager and there weren't cheap keyboard options like today, so I did this job of taking the keyboard apart to wash. It was hard work, but it was worth it. Even the sound of the keys was different. Very nostalgic. 👏👏👏

I always used to think the grey keys were actually brown as standard until I saw retrobriting. But then again these were the 1990's with grubby college kids and lots of sunlight shining through the windows. The keyboards back then had to take a pounding and were designed as such. Still prefer the feel of Win95 two tone keyboards, they're just better to type on with the key spacing. It's worth buying them for pennies at junk stores and retrobriting them back to new, because the keyboards of today feel flimsy and less robust.

I've had the same COMPAQ keyboard for over 2 decades. I usually open it to clean it once every couple years. The worst part is always putting the keys back one by one. But if you take care of your old keyboard, it will last you your entire life barring accidents. Like every consumer product, they were probably made to be less obsolescent back then.
