Wind Turbine Aeroelastic Simulations | Load Calculations | KumsWind

This video explains about how the aeroelastic simulations / mechanical load calculations for wind turbines are performed. It talks about the governing standards, environmental modelling, turbine modelling, controller modelling, design load cases, post processing, fatigue and extreme loads, structural designing and further iterations between load simulations & structural designing.

Amazing overview! Requesting a video into depths of aeroelasticity i.e., damping, edgewise-flapwise coupling, flap lag-lead vibrations, stall flutter etc. and how to model these effects! Thank you!

I have a question sir. Do you think grid outages need forceful breaking. I thought since grid outage has happened soft breaking mechanism could be activated?

  • @KumsWind

@@gokulprasathsubburaj Hi Gokul, thanks for your nice technical question. it will benefit many viewers also to understand more. in the latest generation wind turbines, yes you are right, grid failure is handled as a soft breaking event, with the help of advanced pitch mechanism. in the older generation turbines this is not the case. they have to shut down faster at a pitching rate around 8-10deg/sec. in any case whether it is old turbine or new turbine the DLC 2.1 and DLC 6.2 insists these grid failure conditions (loss of electrical network) as the DLCs that contribute for the ultimate/extreme loading on the turbine. and in reality also this is the case, though the soft braking is applied it will naturally create an extreme loading in the components.

  • @KumsWind

Hi karthick, edgewise loads is due to the self weight of the blades and gravitational/rotational load, whereas flapwise loads is due to the wind forces.
