Curious how you are charging/running your laptops. Are you using the invertor and plugging them into the a/c outlet? If so you are not using your energy efficiently. The laptops batteries are dc power. So if using it the above way then you are converting dc to AC then back to dc. Look for the dc charging cords and install a dc outlet or usb outlet to charge them it will almost cut in half the battery drain on your trailer. If already doing it this way then disregard this message

My guess is that wind would be tough to set up while RVing. You might also find yourselves looking for windier camp spots that would drive you indoors more often. Might be better to just get more solar panels and expand your battery bank.

David & Roe, we've been fans since March when we got our first RV. We love you guys. You've hit on a topic dear to my heart which warrants the first time I'm commenting on one of your videos. I am a licensed professional engineering specializing in off-grid renewable energy. I've been powering my cabin in Eastern WA (100 miles East of Seattle) since 2008 with a 10KW Bergey XL on a 100 foot tower. The valley I'm in produces an average of 12 MPH wind (one of the windiest places in the state) and it creates 17 MWHrs/year making all the power that my cabin consumes. I have a few comments on your proposal to use a ~100W wind turbine for RVing: * To avoid turbulent wind which reduces the longevity of turbines and increases the turbine noise, you need to be 30' above anything within 300' It may be viable for the wide open, windy plains of the mid west. But not very practical amid tall timber. * No matter how well balanced, a wind turbine produces an amount of vibration in proportion to the wind speed. If the mast holding the turbine is attached to your RV you can expect the vibrations to be transmitted into your RV. I recommend a 30'+ mast mounted to the ground and appropriately guyed with no mechanical attachment to the RV and placed at least 1.2 x mast height from the RV (in case a guy wire fails). * Small wind turbines are typically not geared and will turn 300-500 RPM at full rated output. They are NOT quiet (even brands named "Whisper" are objectionably noisy if close by). * For most wind turbines, they only start making power at about 8 MPH (maybe only 5-10% of full rated power), and will produce full rated power at about 25-35 MPH (depending on the design of the turbine's blades). * You asked about reliable brands. IMO Bergey Wind is the best in the industry, but apparently they stopped making anything less than a 1000 lb 10KW turbine. Southwest Wind Power has been around a long time, and they make some models under 1KW, but these tend to need annual maintenance (new bearings, new brushes, new blades) if in areas where they produce close to their max power. I don't recommend companies without a track record. Blades are critically important because a blade breaking at 300 RPM can penetrate an RV. I hope this helps. Happy to provide any additional advice for free if you want it. Randy Richmond, RightHand Engineering

More on Fuel cells: The fuel cartridges are $42 and mine last average of 55 days. My solar is 880 on roof with an extra 220 on ground that adds to roof. I have 3000 watt inverter and a dc-dc charger on alternator. I do lots of video editing, streaming Apple TV and iPad Pros. The Efoy-Comfort fuel cell has been around 35 years in Europe on Sailing Boats so it is quite reliable. It’s easy to setup and install in its custom mount bracket that just screws to the floor then the unit is strapped in and can be snapped out for use in a boat or home. Easy Peasy!

Save your money! I had a wind generator for use in Arizona where it is windy. I got almost no usable power. When the wind was below about 15 mph it had no usable output, and if the wind was gusty it would shut off on a gust and then hold off for several minutes and when it turned on again another gust would turn it off. I finally sold it for about half of what I paid for it. (I tried it for 3 seasons) SAVE YOUR MONEY. The big ones (the towers you see off the interstate work great, but the ones small enough for RV's are garbage. SAVE YOUR MONEY!

Winds die down at sunset. This is due to the reduction of solar convection that "stirs up" the surface atmosphere. Winds after dark are the result of systemic weather pressure differentials. Then, you may experience higher than optimal wind velocities fit your installation. Best of luck!

I've thought about adding wind power along with my solar panels on My RV, My idea I came up with mounting own a car/truck that you use to tow a RV etc by having a welder build you a simple mount to hold a pole that would plug into your receiver hitch on your tow vehicle. The advantage to the wind generator being attached to your towing vehicle is vibration. Can't imagine listening to the vibration coming down the pole attached to your RV from a wind generator. If it's on the vehicle you use to tow, you might be able to hear the whine of the generator, but at least vibration wouldn't be coming into your RV at night while your trying to sleep. I heard the vibration of several generators attached to metal buildings such as sheds and garages, and I can testify, it's very noticeable inside the metal building.

Great vid guys! I love the prospect of wind power - it is very popular amongst the boating community - you should look there for good info on the turbines themselves. I'm a HAM (amateur) radio operator and I use portable masts to support my antennas - they are telescopic, deploy quickly, and are lightweight. This year, I attached one of these masts to my RV using a set of vacuum suction cups one would use to lift glass windows - needs a smooth surface, but also lightweight, and no need to drill holes in the RV. Also mentioned below, drive-on supports and receiver hitch supports are all excellent ideas. The mast would need to be fairly hefty to properly support a wind turbine.

Sailboats use wind turbines, but It takes around 20 knots and above of wind to generate a useful amount of power. They are not cheep. You will be better of adding more battery. So many sailing channels on you tube to find the answers on wind turbines. I think " Gone with the Wynns" Channel talk about this very subject and why they do not use one.

The channel Boondockabillies had a wind turbine for awhile. I think that they stopped using it because of the noise and no/low output. As I recall, it was mounted on a pole attached to their rig. - noise. Not just from the mechanism, but also transmitted through the mount into the rig. - height. In order to get into the winds, they needed to get the turbine higher. - needed considerable sustained winds to generate any power at all.

Unless something MAJOR has changed, the minimum wind speeds to "fire" up a wind turbine are pretty intense. Ideal wind speeds are usually around 15mph. That's a WINDY day! At the Big Tent in 2020, we were an Pomosa North and we could hear a guys turbine from over 150 yards away. You're better off expanding your solar and electrical system.

I did some investigation into wind for my house near Tahoe. Its somewhat tricky, due to three challenges. First, it's noisy. If you've ever used an electric drill, you know what an electric motor sounds like. Second, small scale wind isn't efficient. You might go to a huge amount of trouble only to find that you are producing around a hundred watts on a windy day. This poses a particular challenge for an RV where a large system may not be feasible. Third, turbulence kills efficiency in wind power, including obstructions and ground effects. Turbines need to be mounted on poles, preferably 40 feet or more above the landscape for optimum efficiency. Lower than that or obstructed, you can expect much less power, 20-40%. Again, this poses a particular challenge for an RV. So, I think your challenge for this project is going to be building the largest system you possibly can transport, then putting it on the tallest pole you can manage, and hoping you find some good windy camps without many trees.

You filmed this on a day with absolutely NO wind. And that is one problem. Of course the other problem is too much wind damaging the device. I follow a bunch of sailors on sailboats, many who have an all electric boat. Many of them have removed their turbines. Noise being the principal complaint. Also, they have moving parts that require maintenance. Solar does not. I might examine more batteries and more solar. You do get the irony of wanting peace and quiet in the woods and then also wanting to stream video gaming. It's a unique problem.

Living off-grid for many years we did not go the wind genny route on our RV. The vibration harmonics make a lot of disturbing moans and groans for most non-fanatics of wind gennys. I would do it myself but it is a lot of stress on the RV frame even if it is the 1 1/2" Phat ladder on the Lance trailer trailers like ours. We mount our 25' pole for our log-periodic high gain antenna at our camp host site so we can suck in a little bit of 4G cell signal through our 65 dB amplifier. Otherwise one has to control the vegetation all around the RV, no trees for 150' or so in order to get smooth laminar wind flow, else one just gets a lot of spinning up and down of the genny blades without much power being produced. We rented an Earthship for a week in 1997 and I loved the vibration harmonics of the small 600-watt genny. Although it didn't produce much power, it was a great weather vane for determining what the wind was doing outside. Of course those days with constant gusting winds for 24-48 hours there was power to be harvested, but 95% of the time it was a gadget to theorize about that didn't like to live up to its promise. If I had a stacker trailer I pulled behind a motorhome, surely I'd build a telescoping mast for a 300-600-watt genny so most of the noise vibration would be limited to my ears and my activities inside my workshop in there as the trailer also has its own battery bank. I could go on for hours about the fun of this stuff. Our straw bale house in colorado got 95% of its power from our 940-watts of solar and 5% from our 600-watt wind genny mounted at 25' up with no trees for 1/2 mile. When the snow and wind stormed for 24-48 hours straight, that 5% came in very handy, LOL!

Mounting option to consider: a mast with a base that you can drive one wheel onto. Radio amateur's (hams!) do this often. You could park the RV on it, or the truck and then guy the mast easily. I'd try to put it under the RV's wheels so you don't make the truck immobile. I'm guessing that would be something you don't want to do. Good luck!

Is there a reason why there isn't a small wind turbine designed to charge a battery as you're going down the road? I mean, I know there are limitations as far as height and width etc, but it seems to me it could be done. I've had this thought a number of times...

In all honesty, a couple of things. It takes quite of a breeze. Who wants to camp with 20 knots of wind. It does make sound and vibrations, especially attached to your trailer. My humble opinion is... it isn't viable. Would love to see if you can find a solution though.

I have a large DIY off-grid solar system with panels and 18650 DIY battery. I've looked at wind power a lot - but its not as good a solution as it might appear from what I can tell. The wind needs to be pretty high to get any kind of power + there are alot of mis-info turbines out there for sale (e.g. 500w but they only produce 50w) + x, y, z ... Will be interested to see if you find it a valid / useful solution over time. Personally, I'd recommend bigger panels as in double your solar + battery - you have space available on your roof :)

I think you could build a simple stand to go on the ground. Mount a clamp near the top of the camper. Use a few 3-4ft aluminum pole sections that slip together and mount the turbine on the top section. (Maybe even a telescopic flag pole, just don't mount to the tiny top section) Run some wire from the battery bank and install a plug at the back of the camper. When you get the camper set up, lay the pole sections on the ground with the base attached to the bottom section, assemble them, stand the assembly up and manuever it so you can snap it into the clamp on the back of the camper, then plug it in. Done! It would literally take 5 minutes to set up or take down. You would need some kind of stool or ladder to get to the clamp but I'm assuming you have something to get on the roof already? Maybe add a second clamp near the bottom for better stability if needed. A 400w wind generator is pretty cheap. Remember that a 100w generator only produces 100w at full wind.

What about using an aluminum home roof turbine? They make zero noise, they aren't low profile as a max fan, but only 12-13 inches in height ... Much less a windmill. The home turbines also would cool the interior - they are designed to do just that in Stick-N-Brick attics! Lastly, they require no gears to start spinning, because the are wind friction activated. As you were driving down the road you should get more than enough energy I'd think, due to the air current driving creates. Especially if you put more than one on the roof of your camper. Setting it up to generate energy for your solar system shouldn't be a major deal, though I've never done this. lol Just know it works very well for attics without any energy, keeps rain out of attics, and would have the lowest possible profile on the roof of your camper. As far a installation, it would require cutting into your roof, but a Max Air does too. Maybe replace a max fan with the roof turbine or even use the turbine to replace the hatch on top of the Maxfan and have the best of both worlds when your stationary. I'd suggest the Galvanized Steel version. Much stiffer metal than the aluminum for when your trucking down the highways. You might not even need to turn on the RV electric fan system most days ... Free breeze energy. :-D Watch some videos on installation on a roof and see what Richard, our engineering friend here, thinks about this idea. Text me back here if he green lights it, as I'll be doing this on my step! Stay Safe & Smart! 🤗 Theresa - i.e., Dad was a contractor and we as a family built our home in FL together. QUESTION OFF SUBJECT: I am considering a travel trailer similar to yours. I would use it very similar to the way you do. The rear back window is HUGE for me! I would take out the dinette just like you did....love those windows. I would do a solar system similar to yours except go with a Victron Multiplus 3000 system with either 4 or 6 Battleborns. Would you recommend your trailer to others? Understood that it is a more "budget friendly" camper and there will be DIY projects and repairs. I'm pretty handy so that's not a huge issue for me. Just love those huge rear windows and no slide is a great bonus. Thank you Roe and David!

I would absolutely recommend this trailer to others. We are NOT sponsored by Keystone or any other RV brands so I'm speaking with no bias. Our travel trailer has had some small issues through the years but they have all been fixable by myself. If you're handy then you could handle them too. We have been very happy with how our trailer has held up under the abuse of taking it down ROUGH forest and BLM "roads" and living in it full time for over 4 years.

The "new" design of wind turbine is kind of round and not as long with no directional change with the wind, In theory you can use telescopic poles (I'd use a 3 point tie to the ground for high winds for safety) on each side of the close to the Back with half meter L shaped extension to the side on the top so if it's low enough you can drop it to roof level and it will not stick out to the sides so you can harvest wind when driving, if it's to high for over passes in the area you can drop it below roof level and it will be on the back, so no need to set up and take down.. just extend the polls.. if you want I'll be happy to make this clearer if needed

I have a KW on the roof of my 19' TT, and 250w of portable, I max out around 65amps if I'm in full sun (Two DIY 310ah Lithiums) My side panels are azdel, so I can use suction cups (like sea-sucker perhaps!) that would hold a mast with a turbine. I don't know if it would be possible to drill from inside to outside and create a permanent anchor on the side of the RV or now (especially if you go through the frame.) Wind does sounds like a good idea! While not a full-timer I do prefer to camp under the tree's so I can't fully utilize my roof array. I may have to give it a whirl and try some random piece from Aliexxpress!

The negatives outweight any positives. The wind need to be above a certain threshold just to start producing power, and then they limit the power if it's too high. Finding a location that fits and is windy all night. You most likely wouldn't be happy staying there. More wind less trees, more open spaces. Wind turbines have been around for a long time, If it was such a good source of power then the RV industry would be all over it. They now are starting to adopt the solar power as standard equipment. Having a wind turbine on the rear of your RV even out of the wind on travel days if it spins it's creating drag and there goes the fuel economy. Unfortunately there is no free ride when it comes to wind. Either upgrade the existing solar panels, add more ground deployed panels and upsize your battery banks .
