We've made some big mistakes while RVing. Thankfully nothing as bad as rolling our trailer off a cliff or getting into an accident on the freeway. We've somehow even managed to avoid tire blowouts which are all too common in the RV scene.
However, we have made RVing blunders that have cost us some serious dough. Mistakes like making the wrong purchase to hitting the road without essential equipment and much more! Many were made when we were RV newbies, but one just happened three weeks ago so there's no excuses there!
We made this video in hopes that you can learn from our mess-ups and avoid failing in the same way we did. Check out the video for our 6 biggest RVing mistakes!

It's not just Camping World, any of your big-time multi-state dealers of any kind are one and the same. They're too big and you're too small. Salesmen/women work on commission, anything for the sale mentality robots in pretty clothes and expensive smiles. I hear General RV is in the news for some shady dealing at a Utah store back in 2015, and the beat goes on ...

We do not need a weight distribution hitch because we do not need to distribute any weight. Our truck and trailer already sit level when hooked up and we have zero sway issues once we selected the proper ball mount height two years ago. If your truck and trailer are already level then a WD hitch is harmful because it will distribute too much weight to the trailer axles and can overload them. Our trailer weighs 4200 pounds and our truck is a 3/4 ton diesel, so our trailer is nowhere close to out trucks towing capacity.

I agree as well. Safety first. Good adjusted sway bars also puts less stress on the back of your truck. Plus, don't buy a double ball hitch when you tow a decent-size RV trailer. They often have lower weight limits because the balls are welded onto the hitch bar. Check the tow and weight capacity for the hitch and mount.

@@mrhoya14 Yes, there is a difference. Buy good sway bars that includes weight distribution hitch like Blue Ox. RV over a certain weight needs both. Good adjusted brake control system on the truck also plays an important role for safety.

Thanks for posting a lot of info about RVing. I recently bought a 2005 Fleetwood Niagra Pop-up used and family and I have enjoyed it. I can't say not much this year due to the pandemic but it gave me time to update some things and fix leaky faucets and also about the redo the ceiling. The roof top AC unit was not mounted correctly and needless to say, water damage. I am hoping to get it done by next month hoping that park camping is open. The trailer has been kept clean and according to the owner, since he bought it, they only used it 6 times since they bought it new. Have safe trips. Can't wait to get back to camping

mistake number 7, buying from Camping World. LOL,,,we all make mistakes, its very mature that y'all admitted where you went wrong. We know when we do videos on it, we become targets. Many comments saying you need to get WD hitch. I am one of the few that say they're not always a great addition. I had issues, and there is a video where some engineers prove that you are moving weight from your vehicle to your trailer, which can cause overload issues on your trailer axles. I think WD hitch is great for light SUV pulling heavy trailer, but medium-heavy truck can actually cause too much weight 'distributed" back to your trailer. Lots of advice out there, both ways, who knows who is right. I have video, title "shocking RV info for single axle", sorry can't find link, still relevant for dual axle. Great video, stay safe out there! Dave

You are absolutely right Dave. I am blown away at how many people are completely unable to fathom the fact that we have zero sway issues and our truck and trailer sit level WITHOUT a weight distribution hitch. We tow a 5000lb trailer with a 3/4 ton diesel, we don't need weight distribution.

  • @DeeYohsGarage

    @DeeYohsGarage

@@FateUnbound There is more to it than just taking weight off the rear truck axles and adding it to the trailer axles. The main point of distribution is to take load off back truck axles and put more on the front axles. This will help with emergency braking the most. I do a lot of trailer towing our side by sides in a 24" enclosed trailer.. Never fails some idiot will pull right in front of me and slam on their brakes *(rain or shine). I've slid a few times with some close calls and now always run a distribution hitch.

I can't believe the dealer didn't sell you a weight-distribution hitch when you bought the trailer. We bought our trailer in 2017 also and they installed hitch ball with weight-distribution and leveled the trailer when we picked it up.

  • @FateUnbound

We do not need a weight distribution hitch because we do not need to distribute any weight. Our truck and trailer already sit level when hooked up and we have zero sway issues once we selected the proper ball mount height two years ago. If your truck and trailer are already level then a WD hitch is harmful because it will distribute too much weight to the trailer axles and can overload them. Our trailer weighs 4200 pounds and our truck is a 3/4 ton diesel, so our trailer is nowhere close to out trucks towing capacity.

Fantastic tips, guys. Thank you for sharing. RVing is fun, but it can kick your butt if you’re not prepared and don’t learn from your mistakes. My wife and I are still fairly new to RVing (about 18 months). We found that the manual from the manufacturer for our coach has very little useful information. Instead, we looked at every major system (e.g., generator, power center, water heater, water pump, leveling system, etc.) and printed its specific manual.

You need to get a weight distribution hitch (WDH). It levels everything out. If you get an "Equal-i-zer" brand hitch, it has sway control built-in. It also moves some of the weight to your front wheels. This will help with uneven tire wear as well.

Having had more bearing failures than I care to admit, I have learned three things. 1. An old bearing that is wearing nicely, no grooving, flaking or discoloration, is a better bet than a new, untested bearing. 2. Use a latex glove, the palm of your hand and proper grease. Work the grease into the bearing until you just can't get anymore grease in it. Then spend ten more minutes trying to get more grease in it. 3. If you are concerned about the bearings, jack r up and spin the wheels. All four of them. Out of the four wheels, you will be able to tell there's one that's way different when you spin them by hand. Then you can't wait to address it. I've tried the non contact thermometer on the hub routine. Once you detect a high temp, you'll be fixing it on the road because you'll be on the road. Bearing failures suck but are totally preventable.

I haven't used a anode rod on my trailer for 16 years - still runs fine so don't worry too much - Some plumbers say that aluminum anode rods are not safe because they put aluminum in your water supply. There are some clinical studies that suggest that aluminum might be a contributing factor in Alzheimer's disease - if you live in an area with soft water then a magnesium anode rod is your best choice - Lance from Canada

I agree with the other commenters. A weight distribution hitch with sway control will add to safe towing. You should also check to see if your hubs on the trailer have a grease zero and at least grease them that way. It’s something you can do while waiting to visit home where you’ll have a clean space to work.

We got lucky picked up a used Grey Wold 24 RK. The previous owner knew all the week points a fixed/up-graded them. Not much but liked to see. The windows have foam core seals, previous owner silicone sealed the leak areas. Previous owner silicone sealed all the roof access points. Original tires when we bought it. Put on GoodYear Endurance tires, more importantly had local mechanic mount and balance them, having tires balanced is HUGE. Much like your trailer it came with "C" rated (6 ply)tires. The GoodYear Endurance are "D" (8 ply) rated tires. Just came back from Gatlinburg TN new tires were great. And they are rated for 87 miles per hour. Keep them in the 70s or less you are so good. And always love the pets.

Also the camping spot check. Doing a 27 point turn to flip a trailer on a forest road is...not fun. Though having dual backup cameras really helps (Technically 3...Taillight, tailgate, trailer-bumper, so you can see past the trailer, see behind the trailer, and see the angle of the trailer.) I had to jackknife the trailer to where the bumper of the truck was touching the propane tank to skew it around the corner.
