Love your newfound fondness for cycling. One comment: Philipsen is perfectly positioned for the sprint. Of the people in front of him, two are fading from the late attack (Pidcock and Sobrero (green shirt)), two are leadouts from their teammates (Van der Poel, world champion in the white shirt, and Stuyven, in the red, blue and yellow shirt). So he is really in 3rd position of the people who are contesting the sprint. Cycling is all about aerodynamics; you want to hide from the wind for as long as possible to reduce how much power you need to go the same speed as the other riders. For Philipsen, he was able to avoid the wind, thus having more power left over for the sprint. There is weird stuff happening in cycling all the time; it could be a huge treasure trove of content for you.

The golden rule when playing in the wind was always to keep the ball on the ground - but of course people would *always* try a shot like that one...NEVER saw anyone pull it off before though!

I think what you saw tumbling during the cycling was the sunglasses form the cyclist with the orange/black helmet. You see he looks down, they fall off his face, and bounce around his bike for a second before tumbling sideways across the ground. When you see him congratulating the winner at the end he's the only one without sunglasses as well.

Piddlecock? Bro, the guy is an Olympic and World Champion in 2020 and 2023 respectively in his Part Time gig racing XC Mountainbike. Also the best descender in the World Tour pro peloton. His only chance was to go early as Phillipson is faster flat out in a sprint. Realistically, at that point, he had absolutely zero chance outside of a crash behind him. Cycling is a wildly misunderstood sport, first it is genuinely a team sport a riders team and how they control the race to benefit their leader matters, second being in the wind is a major disadvantage that is why you see tight groups, every attack out of this group is an energy sapping gamble so tactics are real and constant throughout. There is far more depth to it than most assume on top of the grueling nature, but just for reference to the latter, these 130 to 160 pound riders will consume over 6000 calories a day during a Grand Tour to MAINTAIN weight. The big tours cover nearly or over 2000 miles in 21 stages and the one day Classics, such and Milan San Remo, Strada Bianche and Paris Roubaix travel well over 100 miles of racing at average speeds around 27 mph. Many of these races are well over 100 years old being run every year without either a world war or covid.
