60 series axle are great. But the one you want is from a fj62! It's already trust from toyota for added strength and comes with 4.10 gears if you don't want to go bigger. Cool review!

Good to see you're from van Island. Just doing axles now currently building my front. Went with the 60 front with high steer six shooters. For the rear I used a 9.25 Pathfinder diff with possi and disc brake option. The Pathfinder diffs measure out the same length as the Toyota's and have the same lug pattern. Building a 93 ext cab pickup wih these axles re geared to 4:88 on 37s with 2jz/R150f combo

Nice! The H233B is a great axle. Wish we could get the later model GU diffs more easily in Canada.

For the big budget option listing for the Toyota axle is the JHF portal axle...lol. Using a Toyota truck 8" center, custom housing, and Hummer outers. Yah, the only component is the center and possibly the r&p, but....it does have some Toyota to it.

I ran offset landcrusier axles in a suzuki build years ago, disk brake swap, longfields, nothing broke with 38s and super low gears. Pound for pound toyouta gear is stout, the housings are the weak points. Trailgear makes fabricated housing

here in brazil we build an fj40 (toyota bandeirante) biturbo diesel with dstrack axles. now we are going to mount another one with portal,40 dana 70HP striations. only axles that support 47 tires

Slee has hi steer arms for 80 series axle. order a right (or left) hand steer lower arm for double shear steering. best axle for low horse power rigs.

I'm building a 89 pickup. Was 2wd. Swapped in a 85 front axle I plan on completly beefing it up. 63s in the rear and skys 3f springs up front. Currently getting a 3.4 swap, r151f turbo tranny, dual cases. I'll be running 37s. I have a rough fj80. It's so tempting to scrap my idea of building the 85 pickup axle and just use the fj80 axle. The fj80 axles solves so many things right out the gate compared to the pickup axle. Fj80 axle is plenty wide, beefy housing, beefy shafts, high pinion, beefy knuckles, and big brakes.

I'm currently building my 2003 Toyota Tacoma extra cab 4 cylinder Auto, the usual story , did a cheap IFS lift and 35s and then busted a brand new lower ball joint on road? And just gave up at that point and threw the IFS in the garage, where in my opinion is where it belongs! So I had my friend who got me into offroad back in 03 and is now the auto shop teacher here in Freeport high school here in long Island NY, I had him build me a Hybrid axle out of a Fully sleeved 1/2 inch thick Dana 30 High pinion ( Yep, I'm a jeep guy who now has a Toyota Tacoma & a crappie XJ ) with Dana 44 outers, 4:56 gears ⚙️ Locker, Chromo axle shafts, 6 lug conversion ( On a Dana 30 HP ) Warn locking hubs, high steer, i have picked up Dana 30s in the past and walked around with them, this Hybrid Dana 3044 weights I swear it feels like twice the weight? It takes 2 people to move this little bastard axle around! TJ ( Shop teacher friend )may have built 1 of the strongest Dana 30 hp's on the planet 💪I know it's probably going to but hurt some Jeep/Toyota people for some reason? But fuck it , as long as it works who cares and because my pickup is a Daily Driver and unfortunately, occasional offroader and I also haul Motorcycles around and mainly ridiculous heavy Harley Davidsons , So she works for a living and didn't want super heavy axles such as 1 or 3/4 ton axles ( For Now , could use a little more power for daily driving, then maybe ) So the width Almost matches perfectly, I went with a Trail gear leaf spring kit, YOTAMASTERS steering box and Hydraulic ram assist, Ruff Stuff 3/4 Heim joint steering, and so far the build is going Great 👍 I run 35x12.5x16 Milestar Patagonias on my favorite cheap black steelies, going to go up to 37x12.5x17s after I attempt to recover financially after this whole S.A.Swap fiasco 😆 I also have a trail gear low profile front tube bumper and 12k HF winch going on, Sliders, Gas tank skid, I have brand new OME Dakar leafs already and Max Trax lift shackles, so to try to level #larojataca out , I'm adding a OME add a leaf , rear frame reinforcements, lots of upgrades! And this is not cheap and I'm a broke mofo! TG I don't have kids! But if you want something, you gotta pay to play! And I love my truck 🛻 so to me, it's worth every penny, it's also so far as I know, the only S.A.Swap first or any gen Toyota Tacoma on the island 🏝 Seriously, when I try to explain what I'm doing to my truck to people 🤔 they look at me like I have 6 heads?? Very hard to explain to New Yorkers , not exactly common around these parts, here, everyone is driving 150,000US dollar Brand new Never Going to offroad Jeeps, I've even seen them do Dana 60s and 30" rims? The 80 axle is SOOOO beefy but probably unnecessarily heavy for your truck. Not that it matters but I think you got it right, good balance between weight, durability, affordability, and install ease.

Toyota engineers claim that the reverse cut 80 Series high pinion (HP) actually has the same strength as the 9.5" low pinion (LP). The reason for this is when the LP front third is driving forward the gears are pushing away from each other, wheras the HP reverse cut gears are drawing into each other. This means driving forward they will have the same strength, but in reverse the 60 Series is significantly stronger than 80 Series. Most 80 Series HP centres I've seen break have been when trying to tow another vehicle in reverse or reversing out of a mud hole. Additionally, you can actually bolt an 80 Series HP third straight into an 8" mini truck housing. This gives you more clearance and greater strength (when driving forward). Toyota quote the difference in strength between the LP and HP as around 20%.

Man, would really love to SAS the tundra and keep it toyota with a set of 80 series axles. But don’t think it’s possible because of the off set and a bunch of other stuff. So probably go D60 at some point.

Never planned on spending the dough to gear and lock the 8in axles my 81 came with. I stumbled on a 60 series front housing for free and a fine spline 40 series rear for 50 bucks both came with third members. I did the spring over on the 60 series front and did the old centering the rear diff on the offset 40 series rear. Swapped all my front axle stuff over to the 60 front plus the fj short side shaft. And when I centered the 40 series rear I was able to use my it's width mini truck rear axles with my disk brakes.

It would be really interesting to see people start running Tundra 10.5 diffs more. In the front maybe with some sort of custom axle shafts and aftermarket housing. Now that they come with factory e lockers and 6 lug shafts for the rear it should hopefully get more attention. Can't go wrong with Cruiser axles though. Maybe a 80 series in the front and tundra 10.5 in the rear would be the strongest setup currently.

True, it's a massive diff! reduced ground clearance, but same same if you go the Dana 60 route.

@@ToyotaWorldRunners haha yes it is! It's probably the biggest 1/2 ton diff on the market as big. I've read it should have more clearance than a Dana 60 or gm corporate and won't have to do that bottom chop. The pinion bearing is more centered so it doesn't hang low like other 1 ton diffs. It is definitely a dream setup for me if I really wanted to run some crazy trails. Keeping it all Yota parts

I'm currently building Toy 10.5" axles, front and rear, for a buggy. Using the Ruff Stuff housings they will have as much clearance a stock 9.5" housing. The front is using '99-'04 Ford Dana 50/60 knuckles and machined hubs for 6 on 5.5, rear a modified 14 bolt spindle and solid hub for 6 on 5.5" In my 40 I have an 80 FF axle in the rear and the front has a Ruff Stuff housing built to use 9.5" diff, 80 knuckle balls and 80 series axle shafts. I did upgrade the shafts and put the Hell Fire fab knuckles on.

I recently bought a Suzuki samurai with FZJ80 factory E-locked axles.. overkill for 35s that I’m running but the wheel poke is no joke 😂

Finally got my FJ 60s payed more than I wanted but I am beyond excited to start gathering more parts so far I've got 2 marlin crawler 5spds 5 t cases and now a set of fj60 axles my 4runners going to be sick 🤢

I've been looking for fj60 axles for a year and it's been a nightmare all I can find is fj40 axles and occasionally fj80 axles that are usually to over priced or to far away to get

How do the trail gear housings compare? I thought they only had the housings for the minitruck?

They're great from what I hear, I have 2 buddies building rigs with them right now. They're thicker tubing and also increase ground clearance.

My mini truck axle housing is armored trussed knuckle ball gusseted steering stops basically all external mods except 6 shooter knucks stock axes and birfs 529 and Toyota e-locker I’m on 35s. What’s your opinion recommendation I want to go 37-38”. Other than cromo axles that I know I need. I’m fairly gentle on it because the axles are stock and I’m running a 1jzgte. Do you have any knowledge on failure points running 37-38 other than axles and diff gears

Well... I can tell you from experience that when I went form 35s to 37s I started to break stuff, that I'm not that hard on my truck and I have a 22re. 2 rear diffs and 1 front, 5 birfs - three of which were aftermarket. If you're going to stay 8" axles I would highly recommend v6 diffs if you don't have them already, and make sure you're not getting any axle wrap in the rear from the 1jz. Birfs - get longs or rcv's. You should be fine though honestly, lots of guys around here run the 8" setups and are much harder on gear than me.

A question I have yet to find an answer to is how to I identify the gear ratio of a Gen 1 Tacoma locking rear diff? I know what I have on my truck, but how do I make sure that I'm buying the correct locking rear? Not exactly related, but it is an axle question. Enjoyed the video, thanks for the info.

If buying new. match to the front of course. if looking in the wrecking yards, google toyota gear ratio axle codes. there are a few charts out there. i think Marlin crawler used to have one on their site. but i have not been on there in a while. good luck.

For a used diff, there may still be the factory colour stamp on it, and you can look up the ratio. If you're pulling it from a wreck the VIN will have a diff code that you can look up. I've always just spun the tire 10 times and counted how many times the driveshaft spins by recording it on my phone. Use a piece of tape to mark it. Spin tire 10 times and the driveshaft spins 41 times, you've got 4.10 gears.

Not that I'm aware of, no.

So an 80 axel has an 8” but the 60 has a 9.5” center?

Or if your rig is over 4000lbs go directly to 1 tons and save the time and money of constantly swapping birfs
