Wim Hof (the Iceman) on Defeating Extreme Cold & Attenuating the Immune Response

Dr. Rhonda Patrick interviews Wim Hof also known as the "Iceman." Wim holds the world record for the longest ice bath (1 hour and 53 minutes and 12 seconds), just to name one of his many impressive feats. Dr. Patrick and Wim talk a bit about Wim's back story that culminated in him trying out cold water immersion, the relatively recent 2014 scientific publication of the “Wim Hof Method” which includes cold exposure during training, exposure to bacterial endotoxin, Wim's breathing techniques, and meditation (www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24....
The 2014 study demonstrated the effects of just 4 days of training with the “Wim Hof method” on 12 volunteers injected with bacterial endotoxin. Some of the effects include: increased epinephrine, norepinephrine, increased anti-inflammatory cytokines (IL-10), decreased pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-alpha), increased blood ph to 7.75 (in some cases), and decreased carbon dioxide blood levels. The results of this study hint at some very interesting possibilities that might explain why Wim's technique helps him to endure the cold more, as well as how he was able to suppress his inflammatory response to endotoxin himself.

About Wim Hof: After depression led to his wife's untimely death, Wim Hof dedicated his life pursuit to finding natural ways to "hack" the physiological system. His studies into various ancient traditions led him to explore the effects of controlled breathing on the body and mind, especially in response to cold shock. In a 2018 study where Wim underwent MRI scans to examine his brain activity, researchers found that Wim is able to induce a meditative state of euphoria by engaging the central nervous system with his controlled breathing exercise, the Wim Hof method, allowing him to withstand perilous exposures to the cold and actually raise his core body temperature. In effect, his lifework has served to give notable credence to the phrase, "mind over matter."(www.sciencedirect.com/science...)

+FoundMyFitness Rondha, in my point of view, the technical details of producing the video are less relevant than the content. You have credit since a lot of other videos are very nice, both in content and editing. When the dog start barking its noticed you didnt like, but it was out of your control. When Wim asked for the dog enter, your face is hilarious! Wim is really a daredavil and a very natural and spontaneous guy. Thanks for the video, keep it up with awesome content!

+JK Young I came to FoundMyFitness.com website to see some discussion or follow up. But found nothing. I have watched most of Wim Hof vids before this one and was hoping for something new. He is really crazier here than most other videos. Watch the Vice TV video. Its much more informative. I REALLY wanted to hear what Dr. P had to say about the science, but every time she opened her mouth Wim spazzed out and talked over her. Please Dr. P., write some short thoughts on the science and implications and applications or where this crazy man will lead us. Thanks!

There’s something that Wym doesn’t realise and nor can science understand and that is that when you put your body through highly stressful situations you open a gateway to the spiritual realm like many cultures that practice similar. It brings and amazing clarity and reality of life. It’s similar to those who suffer extreme pain and long to experience it again even though their life is better. If you are a real Christian (unlike most 90% of the religious ones) you experience this all the time as the holy spirit brings you into a very strong state of awareness and consciousness. After sitting under the cold shower for a minute or so it strangely feels like my body is glowing or just radiating a type of thermal energy that I can feel inside and out. I’m ADDICTED to this feeling and it’s the best way to start off my day, better than a cup of coffee or any other morning routine I’ve had. Even better when I start my morning off with black coffee and then a cold shower, I feel invigorated just thinking about it!

I wish that everyone who has a mental disorder such as anxiety, depression and schizophrenia, autism etc. would practice this to get much improvement. I've been doing it for a few days, and I can now hold my breath for 2 1/2 minutes after the deep breathing and then exhaling. Before I could only do it for 15 seconds - called shallow breathing. Wow! I feel so good after taking a cold shower which is after the two sessions of deep breathing and holding my breath.

I think I may have accedentally used this breathing methode to surpress anaphalaxis once. I had eaten a candy which must have had some kind of nut in it because I began to have difficulty breathing and hives broke out all over. I didn't have an epipen at the time, but I thought if I could force my body to produce adrenaline I might be able to surpress the reaction myself. (After calling my mom who called an ambulance) I started pacing around and alternating between hyperventilation and controlled slow breathing. The reaction stopped progressing! It was probably 20 minutes from the time it began and when the ambulance arrived, but though I was all red and swollen I was still breathing fine and walked myself out into the ambulance. I tried to tell the doctor at the hospital what I'd done and why, he told me that was ridiculous and I probably had made things worse! I knew what I experienced though, it sounds like this endotoxin study backs that up now!

Amazing. If you want to know how much we're lied to see how crazy this is to almost anyone. It's weird how people would fight this, only so they're not wrong in their beliefs , when how much it would benefit everyone.

Lovin' this video. I can see how much fun Rhonda is having interviewing Wim Hearing Wim talk about his breathing method makes me think about the benefits of HIIT exercise, which have to do at least partly with breathing. (In HIIT exercise, you push yourself absolutely to the limit; then catch your breath; then push yourself to your limit -- a few times.) (Resulting in profoundly deep breathing somewhat similar to what Wim recommends.)

Just read a book on Caesar Augustus. Augustus was plagued by bouts of debilitating illness that would take him to the brink of death every few years. In his early thirties he hired a Greek healer that had him take ice baths. Whaddayaknow, it healed him for life.

I studied this stuff in college and they talked about it in a 'On Death and Dying' book for Philosophy. I love this story. They said he had liver problems. So they tried various medicines and then went from hot water to cold water baths. He was healed. Symptoms were gone. His physician who healed him was Antonius Musa. Supposedly the nephew of Augustus was not healed by this 'cold bath' so shortly after that, Musa disappeared from history. They say cold water is damaging to the liver so Augustus could not have had liver problems - maybe it was something else. They consider the medicine a fluke, however Musa had other notable mentions not only just from Augustus.

***** Yeah, it's fascinating stuff. The I read said that they made a statue of Musa after he healed Augustus, but they had it torn down after he failed to heal the nephew. lol. Poor guy. What was the philosophy class called, may I ask.

@@staceykersting705 Remember never to force anything, do it as relaxed as you can (everything except the fast in breaths during the 30-40 breaths before the hold). Oh and trust me on this one, start with short cold showers after a warm shower and work your way up to just full cold. Do it right after your breathing in the morning. The buzz, and feeling of well being afterwards is so worth it. For the first half of your day, you feel like a million bucks, and like stress just rolls off your back. In fact, I'm about to start my breathwork and cold shower as I type this haha.
