I read a lot of the comments about this episode. This is Big Dave's game, this is what he does for a living. Roland Martin is a client, Dave's job is teach him how to steelhead fish and land them. Watch the student learn that's what impressed me. I give Roland Martin credit for giving the pro at his discipline the respect he deserves.

Dave is hella cool. I see a lot of comments bashing him for his commanding Roland... The way I see it, Dave knows his shit and Roland was out of his element. Steelheading is a different animal than bass fishing. I thought Dave did an excellent job of staying positive while giving instruction especially in light of the fact that Roland was borderline senile/ADD especially on landing that buck between the boat, the bank and the anchor line. As one other commentor mentioned, "Martin doesn't take instruction well." and that is an accurate statement as Dave had to tell him 5 or 6 times to get the rod tip down or the rod out or the rod up hard to move fish away from boat, anchor and in to net... The way I see it is Roland Martin probably has a hard time being instructed because he's so damn good at what he does and it's quite unnatural for him to be 'the student' in a boat. Either way, it was really cool seeing the excitement of this EPIC veteran basser hooking, fighting and landing steelhead. I'm not sure whose life was changed the most that day, his or Big Dave's. AINT THAT THE MAGIC OF FISHING? HELL YES IT IS!!

Kudos to Dave...if you were listening....you would have heard him explain how you drop slowly through the pool with your plugs and back the fish up into the tail out. Back trolling with plugs for steelhead can be obscenely effective. Black is a deadly colour. Tiring though...I did all my back trolling with the oars....usually between gear fishing the nice pools.

I caught my biggest stealy on the Wilson at cedar Creek it was a native so put her back 24 lbs they are my favorite fish to catch my boss owns property from power lines to the water makes camping the best by the way you don't need a guide to hunt fish there when the fish are in omg not to mention the sea run cutthroat in late summer use the little trolling spoons made by arrow and run a legal leader with a fat piece of night crawler trialling behind and it will bring the big ones off the bottom

That blue rod was the first generation Angler West RH rod which has since been replaced by a much higher quality series of rods. Please see them here: www.anglerwesttv.com/AnglerWestRHRods.aspx The 7' 3 power would be the closest match to the blue rod but if Roland had the option to choose the 7' 6" or 7' 10" 4 power that we now have, I'm sure he would have used one of the longer, more powerful rods in that situation.

I have fished the Wilson River many times. Bank access is very limited and he was merely reminding him in a professional guide like manner if that fish goes too far down stream and catches the current they would loose that spot and would have to either launch the boat and give chase or loose the fish. The thought of grilled fresh ocean run Steelhead makes my mouth water. They are a completely different animal after being in the river system for a while such as the ones that make it up to the Snake River. By the time they get up there they taste just like another trout.

The trip should be enjoyable first and I know several fishermen who would be insulted if you touched their rod while fighting a fish.

Eddy Rico, it looked like Roland’s first time swinging and plug fishing steelhead and bass fishing is totally different from steelhead fishing and when you see a fish that size, you freak out and go crazy and that’s when you lose a fish and/or you shout orders that are easy to do that even a kid could do it but he just making sure he doesn’t lose the fish of a life time and it’s true, I’ve seen my self all the time shouting orders at people when I go to net there fish and I’m not trying to treat them like kids or that they never fished before but I’m just trying to help them out.
