Jay, long time audiophile and Wilson speaker/AR tube amp owner here. You have become, BY FAR, my favorite and most useful audiophile information source at the level of audio we are all interested in. Thanks so much for your AMAZING work here and sharing your journey with such honesty and clarity. Also agree on the Alexia/Merrrill/ARC combo being your greatest accomplishment so far...SO FAR:). Can't wait to see what you have next up your audio sleeve. Yay Jay!

Did anyone else hear that Audio Research was just sold again? As for the preamp, a Gryphon preamp seems like a natural fit. Could it be? Thanks again for “doing that voodoo that you do,” Jay. I’m still blown away by the ARC & Merrill combination. This is lots of fun!

Hi Jay, I’ve been enjoying your videos for awhile now; thank you for your input and exposure. I realize I’m posting this comment on an old video, but I’m not sure how else to pose this question to you. After all of your experience with hifi manufacturers, who would you say is your favorite U.S. speaker manufacturer? What I mean by that is, who do you like the best across their entire product line considering build quality, value, customer service, quality of the individuals that comprise the team, most forgiving with a variety of electronics, most forgiving with room placement, best at sound staging, lows, highs, mids… everything. Again, not so much a favorite speaker, more your favorite loudspeaker shop, across the product line, ALL things considered. Thanks in advance. Oh! Also, any initial thoughts on the new PS Audio loudspeaker? (I realize it’s brand-new)

Dude, you are going to cost me a lot of money. I was a major audiophile 20 year’s ago and owned Apogee speakers, Mark Levinson Amplifier and DAC and Sonic Frontiers Preamp and CD Transport. All MIT cabling. Awesome system but I got burned out due to the constant desire to keep searching for sonic greatness.....I lost sight of what the hobby was all about...the music. I feel the bug biting hard again and have a lot more funds to throw at my new quest for the sonic holy grail. I just installed a killer audio system on my boat and throughout the process I kept reminding myself of the good old days of high end audio. Look forward to following your channel!

I'm with you... The classic ML, Wadia, Krell era was very exciting. And to be fair any of the really great gear from that time could still slot successfully into any high-end set up today... But you're right, so much (too much!) great gear at the moment to choose from. Secret is choose something then concentrate on music and not hi-fi, well, for a year or two at least😉

I already expressed how I felt about the sound and music I was hearing from your Ref6SE & the Merrill 118's combination Jay, truly awesome - I have the Ref6 (being upgraded to the SE) matched with Canto Ref600m's, and if I were in a position to do it, I'd substitute the Merrills, but regardless, it's still a class D system and I've always been an A/B guy, my last A/B is (still have it) highly biased for staying in class A. I really doubt I'll stand still, but right now I'm not looking back, not to mention that the Bell Cantos were a steal compared to the cost of the rest of my system - anyway, I totally agree with Warren - that combination was spectacular.

Hi, I also a ARC Ref 6 user, I’m interest to know what are the big difference of sound quality compare with Ref 6 and Ref 6 SE? Also, as I know all Ref 6’s volume is very loud. Depends on CD’s recording, normally I adjust the volume between 15 to 22, and that’s’ is loud enough. I’m not sure if this is a problem but it seem like a little bit strange. Many users think this is a problem and the don’t really like. Does this volume issue improve after upgrade to SE? Can you also share this information? Thanks.

@@MMBLO622 MMBLO622 I'm sorry I can't offer anything on the volume issue - assuming there's no problem with your Ref6 I'd guess what you probably already know, you probably have a high gain power amp - in my system the volume seems "normal" to me and generally I'm running just "north" of your 22, usually 28 on up - so personally, I don't think that's a huge difference - as for the SE upgrade, last time I touched base with ARC they told me I was #40 on the list and by now I'd guess I'm maybe 15 or 20 upgrades away from them having me send mine in - can't comment too much on the sound, only what I've read and heard, the upgrade, I'm told, involves new capacitor banks and is supposed to be relatively significant.

Looking for a better DAC, had Rossini at home last week, really liked it, but don’t wanna pull a trigger yet. Have you had any experience with MSB DACs yet? I wonder what your take on it? Thanks

Jay I love your channel. I’ve owned many big systems. But I might have an idea for ya. For many years I owned a few top recoding studios. Commercial studios in houses. And when building the studios out I all was hired a electrician but not just any. I hired one that dealt with clean power and grounding. By adding grounding rods out side this guy made my studio dead quite. Now these studios where crazy expensive with big consoles and out board gear. Just a thought.

Great Stuff Jay. it is pretty obvious (I think) which pre WC is bringing in. My logic for my guess is as follows: 1. Jay indicates a degree of confidence that the pre-amplifier he has chosen will elevate the Mephisto's presentation. 2. But on the other hand Jay is a strident empiricist (unless you've heard it you don't know) 3. also Jay understands the idiosyncrasies of synergy 4. So how can Jay be so confident? 5. Because he has heard it before or people he trusts have heard it before 6. Ergo Pandora (not being a common amplifier difficult for him to have trustworthy feedback on synergy with anything other than the Pandora.) Apparently an aspect of Pandora that makes it compatible with Mephisto is its absolute dedication to noise reduction. isolated floating chassis within chassis design, separate power for each channel etc. ANY noise coming in gets cranked to eleven by Mephisto high res power. Pandora solves that. RRP is $32,500 USD. Thankyou for this Jay. This is great stuff and I can't wait to see what we get. Have you tried DAC as pre-amp on the Mephisto yet? I personally love what a pre-amp does, but with Mephisto I think the standard rules are out, so maybe it is worth a shot?
