Willys L Head Engine Cutting Valve Seats/Vacuum Test

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video I am going to show you the method I use to cut valve seats. Once they are cut and valves installed I will vacuum test all of them and show you the results.

    You're good Bryon. This planet needs more people like you. Only thing lacking is shot blasting those engine parts. It makes them look so new and clean.

    Thx Brian, this video took me back 51 yrs when I was am apprentice at a Mercedes shop. Owner would stand over us as he taught the same technic, but the new cutters of today are far superior. His shop didn't have a mill, an resurfacing was all done by hand,,,wew ! Those young yrs back in 68-69 will remain in memory, but great to see you teaching Mat how to do the valve job the correct way. My mentor has long passed, but I have passed the same technic to our 2 sons, and hope they will to there children. PS, Dana 27 up on the work station yesterday, will open her up today and try to get out video as the cover comes off. she had no lube and rust in Left knuckle :( Bear

    Seems like only a few engine builders take time with the valves these days. Trying to take the mystery out of it for the Willys world and hopefully give people the information they need even if they don't rebuild their own engine. Always good to have you watching.

    See.... This is EXACTLY the sort of instructional information which I find to be invaluable. It's not just the basic information, it's also the experience shared of what works best based on years of practical experience. I wish I had even a 1/4 of your knowledge. Perhaps I will if I watch your video's long enough, I will.

    Thanks for showing the setup, and good job teaching Mat. If you train a person correctly you never have to do it yourself again and that is how you get time freed up forever. To many people say I do not have the time to train, the stupidest comment ever spoken. Keep the videos coming. Excellent job!

    love the info. questions! the vacuum pump is oilless? any specs I would like to get one - I am guessing any vacuum gage is likely good what material did you use for the end you put on the block (just plastic?)

  • @metalshaperJeep

    @metalshaperJeep

    Any vacuum pump will work, the only ones i don't like are the A/C units with special ends. Just get one that you can hook a hose to and use. The end block is a piece of polyurethane, strong enough to drill and tap a fitting. A little grease or vaseline on the end makes a good seal. Any good vacuum gauge will work fine .

    Hello Brian. Thank you for the fantastic videos that you create. It is a pleasure to watch and learn from you. I am restoring my late father's 46 cj2a in Cape Town, South Africa, and I'm currently busy with the motor. It is a gear drive motor so not original to the car, but that's okay. I'm hoping that some issues I'm coming up against might be covered in your engine build series. My motor has two tappets that do not rotate when the motor runs; it has a crankshaft end-play of .010" with all of the shims removed; and finally the cylinders seem to have been bored out to 0.08", but the #4 cylinder still has a significant scar from the pitting that was caused by the #4 piston rusting in place from the motor sitting for a number of years. To the tappet rotation issue, would you recommend commiting to NOS cam and tappets, or would you say that it is worth the effort of trying to find a place that recondition the original parts? To the excessive crankshaft end-play issue, I have read about machining a recess into the thrust washer to close up the excess clearance, but would there be any negative implications of such a modification? What other options are there in this sort of case? Finally, to the #4 cylinder, what is your opinion on cylinders being bored out to that maximum size? Ideally one would re-sleeve the scarred cylinder, but new 0.08 pistons and rings have already been bought. Is it bad practice to sleeve only one cylinder? I apologise for the barrage of questions. Thank you again for the effort that you put into making these videos. They are extremely helpful.

    I would add a new cam and tappets if I was doing the rebuild. You can also have the crank end play worked out when you regrind your crank, you can work with your grinding company to recondition the crank to have less end play. If your cylinders are already .080" and you need to fix # 4 there is no problem just sleeving one cylinder. Just bore it to size of other pistons so they are all weight matched and you will be fine. Brian

Muchas gracias amigo le estoy siguiendo por sus fabulosas explicaciones. Saludos

    The AC pumps have special fittings on them and they are harder to adapt. They work but you can't just hook up a hose and go. Special fitting are a nuisance.

    Hi Brian, thanks so much for the videos. I just recently got an F head back from the machinist after he sleeved it and I can see a crack from the #3 exhaust almost identical to the one you repaired. He says he thought he Magnafluxed it. I’m going to do the Lock-N-Stitch myself. Is there a particular kit or package you recommend? Thanks
