Willys Jeep: the car that helped win a war | Top Gear RETROspective
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
As Jeep turns 80, we pit its original off-road hero against its latest. While the fundamental mechanicals of an off-roader haven’t changed much over the years - rugged looks, grippy tyres, four-wheel drive - some things most definitely have. But the Jeep was the first. So strap yourself in and don your war paint as Top Gear Magazine’s Jack Rix gives you the history of an icon while throwing it about in a load of mud

Love the original Willys Jeep, a real Icon thats for sure. I learned to drive manual on a 44. When bought it was a 6 volt system.
A tribute of this kind is badly overdue. I'm pleased that Top Gear UK has seen fit to finally deal with that lack of notice of the history of the Willy's Jeep and its impact on automotive history during and after World War II. Thanks a LOT, guys!
Wow! Nice to see this Willys in action. I drove one in the early 80's, on road and off road. Off road it was one of a kind.
The evolution of a legend…
a group of soldiers can disassemble and reassemble a Willys Jeep in less than 3 minutes

Not all soldiers. I’m one, and the only way I could think of to disassemble it that quickly, would be to hit it with a Javelin

As a Land Rover enthusiast and series 2 owner I’m quite happy the Jeep was made because without it I’d be lost for interest.
“Looks like the one before that, and before that, and before that” *proceeds to show three iterations/ refreshes of the same model* (JK) You need to show generations, not facelifts.
I like how they showed 3 jeeps from the same generation as different jeeps
What a shame that you could not use a real WW2 jeep in your you tube video. The jeep you are using is a post WW2 jeep and is not the same Model as a 1941 - 1945 jeep. It puzzles me as there's thousands of real WW2 jeeps still out there.
Over here in Brazil we have a ton of Willy’s in Perfect conditions!!

But how fast is it on the Nurburg ring?
We have a willys jeep and i wanna drive it someday.. And the willys jeep actually looks coller than the wrangler for me
Beautifully made.
The jeep you’ve used is an M38a1, not an original WW2 Willy’s MB or Ford GPW, it’s not like you couldn’t have gotten one of them either.
I own a 58 Willys Cj5, a 44 Ford GP, and an 85 AMC Cj7, grew up riding in and learned how to drive (at age 11) in my Dad's 70 Kaiser Cj5 Renegade....I love Jeeps, I'll never not own one....

Nice ep, please continue where you left it ♥️
If it’s built in Holland, it’s a Nekaf. The Dutch army used them in the 50’s ans 60’s…
So judging by that comparison, the old jeep keeps up to the new jeep... and my golf tdi too apparently?

There's plenty of Willys Jeeps around , Aussie Alby Mangels found lots on a South Pacific island that had been abandoned at the end of WW2 in the Japanese theatre along with heavy trucks and hundreds of 44 gallon drums full of diesel
My dad own one of the Willys Jeep, but now it just sit on our garage for years now

There’s Only One….no doubt about it. But that M38 which you’re carting about on the trailer is not the WW2 Jeep that was the original ancestor to the present day Jeep.

Wow!
Before willys Dodge was the first vehicle from horseback used in the army. Before Willys Dodge trucks were serving as 4x4's in 1932 with trucks to supply the lines. Before jeep was called jeep in 1963. Solders used the name to describe the Dodge 3/4 ton command cars and 1/4 ton willys.Jeep was nick name.
ALMOST every Jeep in the CJ / XJ / ZJ series had round headlights, except the first-generation Wranglers in the 1980s,

The 80s and 90s Cherokees and Grand Cherokees into the 2000’s only every came with square headlights. Even some SJs and J Series trucks had square headlights.
He is driving an M38 the Jeep not used in WW2, but there are plenty of original Willys MB jeeps around (and Ford GPW's). They could of at least got an original for this video😕
how can l watch you'r programme on tv
The vintage jeep in the video is an m38 which is the jeep from the Korean War not from ww2 the ww2 jeeps were the Willy’s mb and the ford gpw and In the Vietnam war the main 4x4 1/4 ton truck was not a jeep but was the m151a1 nicknamed the mutt which was made by ford for the U.S. military during the Vietnam war.
Land rover, Land cruiser, patrol, all inspired by the jeep.

When the EMP hits and you need to go into the thick underbrush of wooded areas, which one do you think will come out on top? Super expensive super computerized technical wide spaced modern wrangler or the plain jane simple old Willys Jeep that was assembled quickly by ordinary laymen?
Parts of video are in higher speed 5:26 why? Also why the LR in the end…?
This is a beautiful history lesson and very beautifully told by Top Gear. Time and again American ingenuity and leadership shows up in the forms of these great innovative and revolutionary products - Jeep Wrangler - that are great by themselves, and also inspire other nations to build their line of products. How amazing it is that all the American car manufacturers got a chance to submit their designs in a fair manner for an enticing project like this, and the mighty Ford even after losing the design bid, took it in stride and helped the American government build the jeeps. Amazing! Respect to Ford for showing camaraderie and supporting the American government's plans. And respect to the American government for selecting designs based on merit, instead of just giving the contract away to a popular car-maker of the time, and potentially ending up with a less effective vehicle.
3:59 in a Willys, privates are pressed together 🤣🤣
Funny that you were not driving a Willys WWII Jeep while describing it
That become a my government(high rank person) vehicles (the new one)and still need a Suzuki samurai or land cruiser LC 80 for towing Or rescue them

Same thing with a Model-T. You can still pull them out after 80 years of being parked and get it up and running again as long as the engine/transmission isn't locked up. Everything was built to a higher standard back then, than anything produced within the last 50 years could ever hope to be.
That's not a World War II jeep I knew as soon as I saw the grill because there are only seven grill slats not nine like the ww2 ones

I love the history side of this video, but why does it feel like I’m watching a Jeep ad? The new Jeep is still the same as the last 3 years?! It does look nice compared to an 80 year old relic but come on. I’m just waiting for him to tell me how I can buy one of these jeeps and what the financing is at my local dealer
Anywhere in the world, 4x4 means it is jeep and jeep only. Host became ww2 soldier by putting helmet and driving the jeep😇
@0:35 Are his nails painted?
Hello
Don't know why LR discontinued their best seller for the awful unpractical, if needing a working off roader, new Defender. The first 1948 Landrover had the same 74" wheelbase but better mounted cart springs and had an Agricultural hitch option with PTO. Dearer than a new Fergy though, but had more uses.

you are forgetting the toyota land cruiser series..
And Land Rover beats Jeep hands down in unreliability. Good for them.
When Jeeps were Jeeps!
The Donut Wheelhouse episode on Jeeps that just posted clearly has a much more accurate account of the original Jeep's genesis

you listened to jeep snobs who are also misinformed. the only time it was pronounced willis was after kaiser bought the company. before and after kaiser it was willeez....as any normal person would pronounce willys as willeez. but jeep snobs who watch too many youtube videos will call it willis and are the first to correct others
He misidentified the Jeep he was driving as an M-38. (Nope, there's one in my garage). He's driving an M-38A1. Why do a video and use a much different car from the 1950s when there's lots of the real thing around?
