Willys Jeep: the car that helped win a war | Top Gear RETROspective

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

As Jeep turns 80, we pit its original off-road hero against its latest. While the fundamental mechanicals of an off-roader haven’t changed much over the years - rugged looks, grippy tyres, four-wheel drive - some things most definitely have. But the Jeep was the first. So strap yourself in and don your war paint as Top Gear Magazine’s Jack Rix gives you the history of an icon while throwing it about in a load of mud

Love the original Willys Jeep, a real Icon thats for sure. I learned to drive manual on a 44. When bought it was a 6 volt system.

A tribute of this kind is badly overdue. I'm pleased that Top Gear UK has seen fit to finally deal with that lack of notice of the history of the Willy's Jeep and its impact on automotive history during and after World War II. Thanks a LOT, guys!

What a shame that you could not use a real WW2 jeep in your you tube video. The jeep you are using is a post WW2 jeep and is not the same Model as a 1941 - 1945 jeep. It puzzles me as there's thousands of real WW2 jeeps still out there.

Before jeep was called jeep in 1963. Solders used the name to describe the Dodge 3/4 ton command cars and 1/4 ton willys.Jeep was nick name.

This is a beautiful history lesson and very beautifully told by Top Gear. Time and again American ingenuity and leadership shows up in the forms of these great innovative and revolutionary products - Jeep Wrangler - that are great by themselves, and also inspire other nations to build their line of products. How amazing it is that all the American car manufacturers got a chance to submit their designs in a fair manner for an enticing project like this, and the mighty Ford even after losing the design bid, took it in stride and helped the American government build the jeeps. Amazing! Respect to Ford for showing camaraderie and supporting the American government's plans. And respect to the American government for selecting designs based on merit, instead of just giving the contract away to a popular car-maker of the time, and potentially ending up with a less effective vehicle.

Don't know why LR discontinued their best seller for the awful unpractical, if needing a working off roader, new Defender. The first 1948 Landrover had the same 74" wheelbase but better mounted cart springs and had an Agricultural hitch option with PTO. Dearer than a new Fergy though, but had more uses.
