FIRST DRIVE: Hennessey Mammoth 1000 - The Most Powerful Truck In The World | Top Gear

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

A V8 pick-up truck is the embodiment of the USA on wheels. Huge, powerful, and not intimidated by anything. Ford’s Raptor and the Dodge Ram TRX take the truck into new realms of power, performance and off-road ability… but that’s never enough for some people. People like Texan John Hennessey, who’s used the Ram TRX as the starting point for what they call the Mammoth 1000: the most powerful road-legal truck in the world. With 1,012 supercharged horsepower on tap, Baja-spec suspension and bumpers that could knock over buildings, it’s surely the most versatile, apocalypse-proof car on Earth. But just because it works in Texas, is it as useful in the wilds of England? Top Gear magazine’s Ollie Kew has been finding out - after he’s saved up for a tank of fuel…

    With trucks it’s towing, payload, and off road ability. Handling for trucks is like towing capacity for a sports car.

  • @littlehippo5004

    @littlehippo5004

    Жыл бұрын

    For people who drive trucks all day everyday, some handling is greatly appreciated. Just makes the driving experience a lot better. The vast majority of truck owners don’t tow frequently, and many fewer off-road that often. A nice balance in the middle is perfect considering the use case, and leave the super off-roading capabilities to more specific models

    @@littlehippo5004 I own a truck an no. No it doesn't. I want my truck to handle well enough that it controls its mass but if you want a sports car you get a sporty car or sedan. I don't want my truck to ride like crap and sacrifice a single pound of its 12000 pound towing capacity so that it has tighter steering. I'd get a miata for that and have the best of both worlds. No one complains that their V8 Vantage doesn't come with a transmission cooler capable of handling a small 1000lb trailer so why should anyone care about a half ton needing to do non truck things at the expense of being able to better do truck things?

  • @rich7447

    @rich7447

    @@matrinezkevin11492 Half tons don't handle all that badly. At legal speeds they can easily deal with any corner that they are likely to see on public roads. I daily drove a 3/4 ton with a 7" lift on 37s for 12 years with no issues and have moved up to a 1 ton DRW (crew cab 8 foot bed). Still no problem cornering at the speed limit, but now I can do it with a couple of tons in the back. I completely agree with you though. You don't sacrifice capability for handling. All that leads to is no handling once you hook up a reasonably big trailer.

    Yes it fits. Don't be fooled. TV shows always like to find the smallest most quaint village and narrowest street to make this look funny but it's getting boring to see. The fact is UK main roads for the most part are exactly the same width as in the USA and I've driven extensivly in both countries. Two, four, six and eight lane roads have lanes to accommodate an artic (semi in US money) and they're the same width in both countries. Also little villages in the UK all manage to be served fine by 7.5 tonne trucks and things like Sprinter vans which are all in the same size bracket as this thing. With around the same footprint.

    @@typhoon-7 People complain it's big for a personal vehicle but i've seen raptors on almost single track roads in southern Italy with only a scrap on the mirrors from tree branches. If an arctic truck (as shown on the top gear tv series this season) can navigate small villages then a truck like this is no sweat. It's not the truck that's the problem, it's the driver not being confident or skilled enough to drive it.

    I think that's why they put the most powerful rather than the fastest. The r1t has 908 ft lbs vs 960 for the Mammoth. Official figures for 0-60 for the Mammoth is 3.2 seconds, the figures for the r1t is 3 flat. Figures I've found for the 1/4 mile are all over the place for the r1t but generally around the mid 11s, official figure for the Mammoth is 11.4. I would say a drag race between the two would very much come down to the drivers.
