I met Mike Teevee and Veruca Salt in real life a few years ago; the actors who played them did a tour around the US, visiting the theaters in the Alamo Drafthouse chain. After showing the movie, they interviewed them, and then they let folks meet them in the lobby and take photos with them, etc. It was pretty fun. 🙂

This is one of the movies that was on television annually during the 1970s. Growing up with this movie bonded a generation of children and endeared Gene Wilder to us as a beloved, if eccentric, uncle. Another great family movie we enjoyed annually, which you might enjoy for a reaction is Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968), based upon the 1964 novel by Ian Fleming, the creator of James Bond 007. (Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is also a musical, starring Dick Van Dyke.)

As someone born in 1966, a big Yes to all of this! Gene Wilder will always be Willy Wonka to me. When he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, he kept it quiet because he didn’t want to sadden or worry any of his young fans who also came to know him as Willy Wonka.

It was Gene Wilder's idea for Willy Wonka to make his appearance with a gimpy leg and then do a summersault and end up walking normally. The reason was, because from that point on, nobody would be able to tell whether Wonka was telling the truth or lying. This was the only movie Peter Ostrum (Charlie Bucket) ever made. After this movie, he left show business to become a veterinarian.

Hollywood never knows when to quit, and after Gene Wilders performance here, they should have stopped making movie using this IP. Not that it was a perfect adaptation of the book, as I've heard the author didn't care for it, but because Gene owned this role. One of the few kids movies that may have been even better for adults, as this movie pulled no punches and was all the better for it.

All the location work for this film was done in Germany. Munich, Bavaria and the Bavarian studios. Watching this, an adult can see that the architecture is very european. Of course, I didn't really think about that as a kid when I watched this the first time. I wasn't born yet when this premiered, so my first experience of it was on video later. This is a Gene Wilder classic! I love his performance here.

Fun fact. Gene Wilder loved kids and was really good at entertaining them, but he also had trouble saying no to them. All the kid actors loved him and followed him around everywhere, so much that he couldn't get anything done and he didn't have the heart to tell them they were in the way. So the producers would periodically distract the children so he could sneak off and get some work done.

Emma One of "Wonka Kids", Charlie Bucket played by Peter Ostrum stated that he will make a cameo in new prequel, Wonka. Interesting note is that Peter gave up movie career after this classic. Studio offered him 5 movies deal. He declined the offer. Because Peter wanted normal childhood. But Peter has an interesting career in medical field. Peter is licensed Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and has a practice in state of New York. Peter and other "kids" do comic conventions especially last year's 50th anniversary of Willy Wonka. All except Denise Nickerson (Violet) attended these conventions. Nickerson died in 2019 at the age of 62. I am curious if other "kids" would make cameos in the prequel.

This movie makes me very emotional because it reminds of my childhood. I was 7 years old when it came off in 1971

It's funny but back in the 70s when I saw this as a kid, I never questioned Grandpa Joe's sudden complete recovery from 20 years of bed rest. I guess it's just a fantasy story - - suspension of disbelief.

Gene Wilder is one of my favorites...he's great in The Producers (1967). If you have not seen that film, it's a must see.

43:10 Actually Emma, for that time that was normal television, also this film is from 1971, there are bigger projects than Willy Wonka way before towards the early '60s, the usual champion was who else than Disney itself, just to mention a few… _The Absent-Minded Professor_ (1961) , _Babes In Toyland_ (1961) , _Mary Poppins_ (1964) , _Herbie_ (franchise 1968-80) , _Bedknobs And Broomsticks_ (same year Willy Wonka) . Not from Disney… _The Incredible Mr. Limpet_ (1964).
