In the department store scene, Santa and the elves aren’t actually behaving that way. The story is told through the eyes of the kid. At that age, Santa is still kind of scary. If you watch the very end of that scene, it goes back to reality.

The most heart warming moment was the father coming through with Ralphie's gun. He seemed so distant and aloof the entire time but he was actually paying attention to Ralphie's request. He understood how important it was to his son. One thing to point, right next to the Chinese restaurant was a sign that said "Bowling." I thought that was very oddly placed.

  • @WintervilleWatchwoman

The Chinese restaurant is called Bo-ling (the w is blown out as it was a former bowling alley). Turns out, bowling was a huge thing in the town they were supposed to be representing. If you pay attention, there are several bowling references all throughout the movie 😊

This movie has been a family Christmas tradition for decades. They made a modern day Christmas Story with all the original kids as adults. The house is a historic landmark. They have put the house back to the original condition and you can stay the night in the house. They have hourly tours with the house too. It's a huge Christmas attraction I believe in Cleveland. The mother is Mart Dillions mother and both the parents have passed away. The mother in just the last year or two.

Christmas day is still a huge at home family lunch and dinner but yea because of this movie it's always Chinese food on Christmas Eve ... This was a very thoughtful and sensitive reaction; well done. I think you were a little overly-concerned about the darker scenes - like the visit to Santa. Bear in mind they're exaggerating the memories of a 9-year-old boy, so many things are going to be shown as more dramatic than they really were. Have you seen 'The Princess Bride?' I believe you would really enjoy it; it's a beautiful fairy tale with a great sense of humor - a true modern classic.

Yeah my brother's and I had that gun at 8 years old. It's the ultimate toy. Just running around the woods with our BB guns...all day until supper. Every actor wants to make a Christmas film because if it's popular like this one, they'll collect royalites every year that can pay for their Christmas gifts. Haha, but it's not easy making such a beloved film. There's only maybe a half dozen that have made the list. I love how they show Ralphie's imagination. Imagination is so important when you're a kid and if you can hang onto it, you can be so creative as an adult.

The original short story begins with an adult Ralph(ie) living in NYC. He has a random encounter with a hippie at a diner. The hippie has been protesting the marketing of "war toys" to children, saying it's a plot by the Military Industrial Complex to make boys grow up to be violent and perpetuate war around the world. This sets up Ralph's flashback to his "best Christmas present", and how childlike and innocent the reality actually was.

Original mom from classic declined to come back because she is retired from acting. Early this year, Melinda Dillon, original Ralphie's mom died at the age of 83. I have a great movie for you to react to. "It Happened One Night", 1934 screwball comedy classic, IMDB rated 8.1, staring Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert.
