Willis plays the GR-55

Музыка

'Been ages since I uploaded. Hope this makes up for it. I'm putting the GR-55 through its paces plus I've cranked things up on the production side. Now back to work on the new TT cd . . .

    I'm finding much better tracking with the GK-3B. I did this video with the Graphtec system and you might notice I'm mostly using the A, D & G strings except for some processed sounds that don't involve the synths. After switching to the GK-3B I was able to go back and enable all the strings for all the patches. The lower strings will never track as good as the higher ones. But at least now, depending on the patch, they're useable.

    Some amazing tones you have going on! Really makes me want to explore one of these units. It's pretty cool how you and some other players are sharing your sound patches on the Roland Artist page. Thanks for that!

    @explodyody If only someone would invent some kind of global search system that would look up phrases like "GR-55 price" then I could give you your answer. And if someday something like that existed they'd probably put it right up there in the web browser so everybody could have easy instant access to a unbelievably massive amount of information. I'm sure it will have a cool name, too - nothing that sounds stupid like "hoogle" or "doogle". Something intelligent sounding . . . somdeday. . .

    @gastr1c Thanks - Obviously, you'll get better results with cleaner technique, muting strings that aren't playing, etc. The GK SENS is per string and is just set up normally to prevent the hardest playing from clipping the indicators. The velocity settings are: Vel Dyn 10 Play feel 1 Low Vel cut 4 These grooves are at 130BPM. There's more clips that I didn't include that are mostly 16th notes that are fine & clean. I haven't really been scientific about it but it really depends on the patch.

    Your playing technique is inspiring, particularly your muting with your right hand. Nice work, and the first bass-specific GR-55 video I'm aware of. Curious if you can share some comments as to how you get the tracking so glitch-less in bass mode? All muting and playing technique? What is your GK SENS and GK LOW VELOCITY CUT which seems to be the critical GK parameter. Lastly, where have you found the wall regarding the fastest consecutive note speed for PCM voices? 8th notes @ 140BPM? Faster?

    Hi Gary, I'm a big fan of your music. You are a great inspiration for me, and one of the most original and talented bass players of this times... so without more compliments haha I response with a video of my band, that for me it's a little tribute to your music. Hope you don't throw up with it hahah... Best regards!

    This is great stuff! You get a much more convincing trumpet sound than I've been able to get on either of my guitar to GR-55 set-ups. I wonder that has to do with the fact that you are using a fretless intrument.

  • @gwillis44
    @gwillis4413 жыл бұрын

    @abrahamusico Actually, I like the modeled upright bass sound of the VB-99 better. It captures the nuances of the fretless and translates them to its version of upright really well. I've been able to get a similar modeled upright in the GR-55 going but I haven't been able to program it to match the VB-99. Of course, there's the sampled acoustic bass from the synth section but I don't find my self using it as much.

    @gwillis44 Thanks for answering my inquiry. I'm not personally able to get consecutive 8th notes @ 140BMP to trigger using pure PCM voices. However, I'm trying to play the same note repetitively on the same string. If I play slow, it works great. Instead I've opted for piccolo strings and using guitar mode which triggers PCM much better for me. However, it's important to note I'm a self taught hack that lacks the finger style and control you demonstrate.

    I am very interested in the bass sounds of the GR-55, I want to make bass and guitar at the same time. What its your opinion about the upright bass or the acoustics ones. I would like to be able to play salsa rithyms, jazz, bossa nova. Great music of yours!

    Gary, I'm a fan of yours since the 80s. The sounds you use are fabulous. My query is because you do not use your direct bass sound in this demo mixed with the midi. On the other hand, your technique is much faster, usually with the bass. You could play faster with those sounds or using 50% direct bass and 50% Roland or there is too much latency or delay. Thank you

    Hello Gary! Here's Ivan. How is everything? (And missing your lessons!) Gary, I have a question. I have a Yamaha TRB-6P and it has a piezo. It's possible to use the piezo as a midi pickup? Can you give me some solutions for use my bass as a midi controller? Thanks a lot, and thanks for sharing your music. It's a pleasure transcribe it!

  • @gwillis44
    @gwillis4412 жыл бұрын

    @ivandruping Hey Ivan, yes it's been a while. 'Going great, thanks - hope you're enjoying your new locale. It would be complicated but possible to integrate the piezos into a system but (like you can see in my other responses) I've found a lot better tracking by switching back to the original GK-3B - instead of my Ghost piezo-equipped bass. So I would recommend not worrying about the piezo and just go with the GK-3B and the GR-55.
