William Grant Still "ROMANCE" FOR SAXOPHONE | Michael Hernandez, Alto Saxophone

Музыка

William Grant Still (1895-1978) composed Romance for Alto Saxophone and piano in 1954 (there is also a version for saxophone and orchestra) for the classical saxophone pioneer, Sigurd Rascher. Still composed over 150 works including operas, symphonies and chamber music, however Romance is one of only 4 solo works that he wrote. Saxophonists are quite lucky to have this little gem in the canon.
Still was one of the first African American composers to gain great notoriety in the classical music world. Still was a prolific composer that influenced many trends in American music and inspired several American composers of the early 20th century including none other than George Gershwin. Unfortunately his legacy is often forgotten or overlooked in modern day music history.

Dr. Hernandez, I am so happy to find this background on Still's Romance. I am preparing to perform it August 1 with my community orchestra in Cincinnati, on trombone. You may be aware that the piece has become very popular in the trombone world since Doug Yeo, then bass trombonist of the Boston Symphony, published his edition for trombone and piano in the 90s. I would love to use these notes in the program, or, if you have sources you could cite, to go to those. Thank you.

Very informative and beautiful playing Dr. Hernandez!! Not only is this a great piece but something about Still and Rascher working together seems so fitting!

Gorgeous playing! One of the gems in the saxophone repertoire, for sure. Never knew the Romance was meant to be the 1st mvt of a suite! Who knows how that would have sounded?
