The time Simon Cowell got owned and proved to the world he is a hype merchant with not a musical bone in his body. Will took him to the floor in the politest and none aggressive way imaginable and subsequently proved what a great artist he is.

Here here... 👌👌 I remember watching, apologies, hearing this on Saturday night wayyyyyy back when all of this kinda thing was new and almost skidded down the stairs to tell my Mum to turn it on so she could hear him! His voice gave me goosies (goose pimples just in case that's not clear 😉) He was and is a class act. I loved him from the first time he did don't blame it on the boogie .... Even with those funny dance moves. While I believe Simon Cowell has changed a little since he's become a daddy and with the passing of his Mum, who he adored ( and it was dreadful to see the mourning on his face) he was wrong about Will. He wanted Gareth to win and that was that. Will and always be the original... And no, I'm not 80 with my Sunday lunch! X

@@zhouquanlin No he is not. He is just very critical so that only the best talented artists get through. He is basically a talent scout and wants to secure only the very best artists. Luckily Will Young went on to become one of Britains best ever artists shortly afterwards. But how was Simon Cowell supposed to know that as he only had one short song to go on. When you haven't got much to go on it is very hard to make a good judgement. To his credit Simon Cowell put together One Direction who went on to have massive success.

@@angusmeigh5141 No matter what, I think we can all agree that Simon Cowell is a useless human being. What does he actually provide to the betterment of society? Absolutely nothing. Why is someone like him worth 400 million dollars when doctors are risking their lives trying to save people infected with Covid-19 while making a puny 500,000 in retrospect.

Did he? He had one song! One! And most people know he had one song and can't remember what it was! You have to remind people who he was, and even then they'll call him Will Smith, cos it's a bland and boring name just like him.

This was an incredible version of the song. If anyone didn’t feel the soul in his voice when he sung that they must be clinically dead!

That is a great classic rock song and Will Young definitely did a phenomenal job on it and he’s definitely a class act for letting Simon Cowell about what he thinks.

Will young has a brilliant voice. Unfortunately Simon Cowell got that completely wrong. That song was brilliant.

This interaction makes me proud to be British - William a fine gentleman and Cowell an expert at finding talent. Cowell knew that there was more to get out of him, and this probably motivated Will to get better

I don't like will young for my own reasons but his voice is stand out as its different & he is a great singer..Simon Cowbell said totally normal!!!!!! I think that says a lot about his ability to judge a singer....a stand out different voice gets noticed & sells well....I bumped into Simon once at a car show & he absolutely Stood out as a self important Pratt...he was walking with Katie price....it's hard to describe the feeling of looking at two people that live in there own world where 80% of people they meet are so far up there arse for money that they actually think there great....his hateible personality doesn't seem to be a good guy bad guy act...it wafted off as arrogance when he walked about.

This live version was much better than the studio version, love his voice.

So many Folks "Covered" Light My Fire. Did you ever hear The Four Tops Version, they did a great job as well. Gareth Gates I found didn't handle his Pop Fame as well as he could have. He believed his own hype sometimes.

Agree. But he said he was 22 when he auditioned. And it all worked out for him in the end and the world is a lot more open and understanding now

It was not “average” and he did not “raise his game.” Had Simon had had a better knowledge of music he would have seen that Will was obviously trying to show the full range of which he was capable (in a small time slot, which is harder than a complete song). Will was deliberately showing different styles and not “improving.” What an opinionated, non entity this judge was. Will was an excellent example of how words can sometimes speak more “volume” than actions. Simon had lost. His egocentric petsonality has never taken someone standing up to him and disagreeing. The man is used to women falling over the place for him and probably men crawling too. Simon knew he had lost this battle but turned his ego around to praise Will for his manners, to save grace. Clever man, Will.

You've turned Will up to 11, he was only ever a 4. Maybe a 6 on a good day but that's not true, he was just a 4 - back then, which is a 2 now.
