@lvivboi Why can't folk accept that he wasn't competing with the Doors. He was in a talent show and was competing with the contestants. The choice of the song that he liked it. It wasn't his intention to ruin it, he just did his own version for crying out loud. He obviously knew he couldn't sing it in the same way as Morrison.

Just lovely - like many of you I watched it live and it was SOOOOO obvious who should win. Everything was in synch. I have always remembered how "warm" was his voice, how it all linked with the flames - how the set looked on fire ... he was meant to win, he deserved it. This was before he was groomed and its still great. And what a smile - that magic, natural smile ! Will Young - being himself. Good for him.

José Feliciano covered this in '69 & won a grammy. The Stereophics were the the 3rd band to release 'Handbags..' Marvin Gaye covered 'Through the Grape Vine'.. The fact that TV made it real is like saying football or any other sport is worthless because of media coverage.If its mediocrity as you say the artist wont last. Will Young sings well & deserves where he is, not because he was on TV but because he has a good voice that is sellable.

I really love Will's version of this song. It might not be some peoples come of tea compared to the original but u cant knock him,he did make it his own after all!

Yes - The Doors were amazing, and Jim Morrison was a legend, but what's wrong with doing covers of classic rock songs, and sharing them with new audiences? In my opinion Will Young has one of the most fantastic, and unique voices of any contemporary vocalist, and I actually think his version of this song is very good. He made it his own, and delivers it brilliantly. It's not a 'copy cat' of the Dorrs original, and he didn't ctucify it at all.

There have been loads of good versions of this song done since The Doors - Shirley Bassey, Jose Feliciano - that've given their own flavour. A top tune, done differently.

I'll reconsider my use of the word original then, the style is definitely original, and is likely the cause of so many negative posts. You can count me among the ignorant then, this was the first I had heard of him. I used to think of ignorance with a negative connotation, but I believe it is a necessary part of existence, you can't know everything, and need to prioritize.

And do you know what I found really annoying is people were saying this is such a brilliant cover, oh its completely different to the doors job, Will Young'sdone such a great job. Its exactly the same as Feliciano's version!

Originality in a song can be measured in lots of ways, in this case I was referring to style. The words and music are the same, but the performance is completely different to any other. I was only reasoning with people who just insult new interpretations and are too ignorant to appreciate new ideas and new artists. I think the fact that Mr Young is now a well established artist with four albums just shows the ignorance of some people.

@talk2ankanjim I'm not sure you read my entire comment. I did say that it was written by RK and that this was a cover of JF "version". I realize that the Doors recorded this first but it is also true that JF won a Grammy for his cover version of this song in 1969.

The Doors made the most depressing music in the world in my opinion. I'm happy he chose this version, it's suits his voice very well. But his original work is better, he's sublime at conveying emotions.

@silowhore It's your opinion of course but his unique voice was mentioned often during Pop Idol and after almost 10 years from winning the show...I believe the proof is for all to see. He has maintained a fabulous career of selling albums and acting.

@silowhore This audition was 9 years ago! Strange that you have remarked that Will hasn't any distinguishing characteristics to his voice, from day one in the audition period of the show the judges always mentioned his UNIQUE voice.

I like this version, is more soft, more pop; yeah its different from the original, but it doesnt mean that is worst. I love this version!

What's your guys' problems? I'm not British, so I have absolutely no idea who this guy is, I was just watching videos from pop idol cuz I just found out it even existed. (Haha yeah I'm dumb american). But I didn't think it was that bad....but I also have never heard the original...

doors are my favourite band so I def prefer the original but it is a nice version
