A great old song and every song is better with a banjo.

Looks like a Deering Goodtime Banjo....my first banjo. I highly recommend it to any beginners. Just a beautiful instrument with great sound for the price. I still play it after many years when I just want to do some simple picking. This song was beautifully done!

It is indeed a Deering Goodtime! I haven't played many other banjos, but I've loved playing this one. Thanks for listening!

TACK!!!

Beautiful voice, you remind me a bit of the great Irish singer Annmarie O'Riordan.

Irländsk naturligtvis ,klassiker och heter Long Before your Time.

Awesome stuff, as always! Every now and then, there's something about the way you sing that sounds familiar to me, and I finally pinned it down. Have you seen the old Rankin-Bass film, "The Hobbit"? Sometimes your performances remind me of their "The Road Goes Ever On and On".

Hi! I've been absolutely loving your covers, and I was hoping you might have a few tips for learning banjo songs by ear - I keep seeing covers/songs that I'm eager to play but can't find instructions. Thanks so much in advance!

Thanks for listening! To be honest, when I saw your comment about tips for playing by ear, I genuinely didn't know what my answer would be. Because sometimes, it seems like I just sort of...do it. Or I just pluck away, note by note, until I find a finger pattern that works. And, in part, that's true. But I thought about it some more, and actually, I've found that playing by ear is very much built on songs I've already learned. When I first started playing banjo, I was using tabs and watching tutorials all the time. This helped me build up a repertoire of musical phrases, tips/techniques, and fragments of scales (which helped because I've never formally learned them). Since a lot of melodies in folk music are similar, it can be relatively easy to "plug and play" a musical phrase you already know. Occasionally, as I'm figuring something out it, I'll get it on the first try and I'll wonder, "how did I know that would sound right?" And I'll realize that it's because that tune is mimicking another tune I play with an identical or similar phrase. The muscle memory has given me a bit of a "map" of note locations and note patterns in my head. Tabs and tutorials also helped me learn less intuitive ways of hitting notes. I can't tell you how off pull-off notes and drop thumbing have come in handy. But I've rarely "practiced" these techniques in the sense of doing them, just on their own, for hours. It was always within the context of a tune, which I think also helped me make better and more frequent use of them. So I would say, especially if you're just learning, don't shy away from tabs and tutorials of other songs, even if they aren't the songs you really want to figure out. Let them be your building blocks, and when you've compiled them, it will be easier to figure things out by ear. Thanks for coming to my TED Talk, and I hope this helps! Good luck!
