Will this nickel-hydrogen battery replace lithium? Used in SPACE for Decades.

Ғылым және технология

Did you know the batteries used by Nasa have a 30 years lifespan? These Nickel Hydrogen Batteries have been in use since 1970s, and the technology really haven't changed. So why in the world don't we use them here on Planet Earth? Let's look into the history of Nickel Hydrogen Batteries, how do they work? How much are nickel hydrogen batteries? Are they even available here on planet Earth? We will look into EnerVenue who is championing nickel-hydrogen batteries as a groundbreaking solution.

    Very nice reporting, and your pronunciation is certainly good enough. I would encourage you to look at a brand new development by M.I.T. , as commissioned by Lamborghini. It's called the TAQ battery. It will be half the cost of Li-ion, has huge power density, 765 wh/kg, has triple the lifespan (over 10,000 cycles), charges in 10 minutes, and uses no Cobalt. Sam Evans, the Electric Viking did a nice story on these. He says If you powered an electric Land Rover with them, it would have a range far in excess of 1,000 miles; and that if this information is correct, they are the best batteries in the world.

    Thanks for the video. This Nickel based battery seems like an interesting possibility. The biggest issue will be price tho. While NASA tested batteries won't "explode"... that's because of extreme design. Batteries sold to homes will likely be made much cheaper!

    140 Wh per kg is the energy density, not the power density. Power density would be watts per kg, with no hours involved. Cars need both to be good. Some batteries with excellent energy density don’t have good enough power density for cars.

  • @SpaceDeviant

    @SpaceDeviant

    Power Density is actually W/Volume, not mass. So W/m³, the W/Kg is the specific power. Wh/Kg is also considered a specific energy measure.

    I don’t understand the correlation between the battery and hydrogen production? My understanding is the battery uses hydrogen to store energy but what is the need to put pure hydrogen into the battery? Since the battery converts water to hydrogen when it’s charging, wouldn’t you just put water in the battery and then charge it with maybe roof top solar? I’ve always thought a hydrogen based battery would be well performing.

    I looked at your video list to-date and notice Aptera is not on your radar. Do you know about it? If so, have you invested or preordered? Maybe become an ambassador? Or are you opposed to solar on a moving vehicle? It would be nice to get an opinion from someone who installs home solar systems.

    It’s nearly irrelevant how much the hydrogen in the battery will cost. The hydrogen is not used up during operation, and even the dirtiest hydrogen, if used to make these batteries, will have a trivial impact on the environment. Sure, it would be nice to use green hydrogen. But not important. BTW, metals, like nickel, are rarely found in elemental form. They are in compounds (combined with oxygen, sulfur or chlorine for example) and it takes a lot of energy to get them free, just like making hydrogen from water.

    Hello 👋 and I wonder what is so different about the solar panels they use also? Especially when a panel receives soooooooo much less light on Mars?? Great video and I feel they already have battery technology that could change everything! But why they don't put it out in the market is at a loss to me?? See you on your next video 😊😊

    The grid is extremely expensive. If you are replacing all fossil fuels with nuclear electricity, then you need a bigger capacity national electrical grid. Nobody talks about how insanely expensive the grid was to build and maintain. And a grid 5 times bigger ??? Hello 👋 hello anyone home, hello 👋 You may have a good alternative. 👍
