Will This Be Replacing The US Army’s 50 CAL?
The M338 is currently in competition to replace several different weapon systems for both SOCOM and the US Army. And although it’s still early it is a real treat to be able to get some hands on time with this prototype MMG.

Machine gunners are a breed my guy. They do what they do. Accept no substitutes.
That gun looks like it was taken straight out of halo. I absolutely love it. The main reason I love it is because you can give it to a SAW gunner in a fireteam and have not only more firepower but also someone that can provide covering fire, take out vehicles, punch through cover, and even take out enemies at longer ranges. I think it’s more useful than the M240 for infantry because of its weight which is heavier than the M338 which allows SAW gunners to fire while they walk, meaning they can control their surroundings much more effectively so that not only the gunner but the other soldiers in that fireteam. In my opinion, the military should take it! If they use it right, they can have a lot of roles that they don’t have filled replaced by the SAW gunners.

@@zchen27 M855A1 Is really squeezing the limits out of the platform. And it's tearing up barrels lifespan. You need the velocity and the mass. Remember Level IV is rated up to 30-06 AP, level threats. Getting 5.56 to that is a fools errand.
@Carbidestruck
Жыл бұрын
@@zchen27 I guess the purpose of the SIG is to offer overmatch capability, i.e 5.56 tungsten rounds can pen lvl 4 plates at typical combat distance, but the SIG is capable of penetrating future body armour developments. Furthermore the optic combined with the rifle should offer more range, increasing survivability, which is a serious priority. The question is wheter the 6.8 actually offers AP capability and wheter the increased engagement range offered by the optic materializes in actual combat.

I have a sig P320 the full size model ( cost me 500 dollars a few years back ) the first strike fire pistol I ever owned. People have given me grief over it at a local outdoor range where armalite style rifles are prominent.and for some reason the majority of pistols seen are the high end semiautomatics. Now my 320 has traditional iron sights. I was shooting at 10 and 25 yards. Offhand switching between my left and right hand some guys new to shooting (range master was constantly checking for safety concerns). had tricked out 9mm shooting at bowling pins set a 100 yards. At a break I asked how they were doing. They were not hitting anything. I asked if I could shoot at their bowling pins. Okay they said. So I got my 320 after the break and using 115 grain Winchester from a range pack. I proceed after one test shot to hit the bowling pins with 3 aimed shots but using the pole supporting the awning as a support. The range master chuckle. We had known each other for years. A weapon in 338LM to supplement the existing .30-caliber (or 6.8x51) GPMGs on the lighter end and the Big Ma Deuce 50-caliber HBMG on the upper end is a fine idea. The army already classes its precision/sniping rifles in that manner - "light" is anything up to and including .308; "intermediate" being anything between .308 and 50BMG such as 338LM or 300NM or 300WM; and "heavy" being the 50-cal or larger. The 250-grain slug from a 338LM weighs only one-third as much as the 750-grain round from a big 50, and sometimes throw-weight makes a difference. As an anti-material weapon, the 50BMG round is a heavy hitter; at 4000 yards, it still packs more than 1,000 lb-ft. of kinetic energy. Those are big shoes to fill for the 338. As a former machine gunner I would love to get this on a sustained fire kit. Damn you would have some punch and reach. Never thought of 338 in a mg before but when you look at what that round can do and the light weight of the platform it is a brilliant idea. 7.62 was deadly in urban areas, damn 338 would pound through walls like nothing was there. Just thinking about last time I provided covering fire with a mag58, two of these on tripods would be freaking devastating. 50 cal is great but the 126 lbs making it totally useless in the mountains or rough terrain in a dismounted role. Mg338 checks a lot boxes.

When I first saw this MG, it instantly became one of my new favorites, the round and it’s aesthetics make it fucking badass
Missed you Charlie! Also John's a monster, and speechless Garand Thumb at the end was hilarious, well-done St. John.
I was at Sig HQ last weekend and got to put hands on the M338 and it really is a badass weapon. The 240B will always have a place in my heart, but this thing has so many quality of life changes I didn't know I would have wanted back in the day as a machine gunner!

My Uncle Hank (Sgt. Henry Abbott USMC, 1st Marines, Silver Star, Purple Heart) had a curly stache like that. He was a Marine who fought on Guadalcanal and across the pacific. Great guy, soft spoken, big positive influence in my life. He loved to fish and taught me how. We spent hours and hours fishing and chatting. He was instrumental in my decision to serve. There are a couple old news film clips and a picture out there from Guadalcanal where my Uncle Hank is clearly visible. He looked the same but much younger and clearly starving from the lack of food and really really tired. He has been gone about ten years now....still miss him. Keep rockin that curly stache!

While the M7 (M5) doesn't appear to improve a lot over the M4 with the exception of single round stopping power (which to be fair, was the aim for SIG and the military), the M250 and M338 are massive improvements over the existing service machine guns, especially the M338 being that intermediate between the now M250 and the M2. Seeing it rip through that ballistics dummy was both impressive and low key horrifying
