They made it a requirement for the actors to read and understand (and explain to them) several books including The Simulacra before they would be hired on for their roles. That seems kinda ridiculous and would make less sense than his story imo. They should be the ones begging to work with him not the other way around.

It’s actually well documented that they asked the actors to read several books to help understand some of the high concept ideas of the movie. Keanu Reeves has spoken about it several times in interviews and a quick Google search will help you find more information on this. It’s even on the Wikipedia post for The Matrix. Will is exaggerating how they approached him for the film because he has regrets not accepting the role, which he clearly states. Just because they are “unknown” at the time doesn’t mean they are not capable of writing a deep and challenging script for the actors to understand. They requested the actors read the books to help develop their characters and have an understanding of some of the more challenging ideas they wanted to portray about simulations, alternate worlds and the subconscious.

@@zacharyhoy1933 also, again, anytime the Wachowskis are interviewed they seem very bright and are intelligent enough to write and plot out the script and ideas for The Matrix trilogy which deals heavily in simulation theory, relativity, the subconscious, religion. A lot. There’s no way they approached Will Smith, whom they offered a role to and clearly wanted to work with, like a bunch of stoned surfer kids. This was their chance to make a movie. This was their chance to finally fulfill a dream with an actor they respected. There’s not a single chance they bungled it like Will is portraying.

Funny thing is, I heard they made the movie with Will in mind and Reeves was the last resort... Lol... I used to say I couldn't see anybody but Reeves as Neo but Will wouldn't have made the character a bit funnier. For 1999, it would be like a version of his character in Enemy of the State. Serious the whole movie with some comedic quips.
