When a celeb make a public apology video, they arent apologizing to the person they wronged. They're apologizing to the public.
@gorgit

Publicly apologizing should also be done at such grand scales. Its admitting to everyone that you were in the wrong for humiliating (or else) another person, removing some peoples doubts and simply honoring the other person. A silent apology is always needed, but he should stand his ground publicly.

I don't think he was faking sincerity. He knows that the world views him as the "safe" black man, so when he disrupts that image, it's shameful for him. What's more, Chris has been coming after Jada for _years_ . This wasn't the first event -- far from it.
@insidescuff

@@LadyAstarionAncunin oh boo boo. The comedians been making jokes about someone. You’re acting like he’s targeting her and doing it maliciously to make her look bad. He made jokes about everyone in that room and some were way worse than that tame one he made about jada. The ‘joke’ which caused will smith to act like a toddler and attack Chris rock can even be seen as a compliment. She was being compared to someone who is a badass in the movie. Even if he did say something outrageous, that doesn’t warrant attacking him on national television and embarrassing him in front of a room full of celebrities just because your feelings are hurt…

He didn't apologize to the real victim here: Amy Schumer. She was traumatized, yall. All that attention she thought should've been hers was given to Will. @@CajunReaper95 Uhm no. Just because someone says something you don’t like doesn’t mean you get to automatically resort to violence. There’s a time in a place to hash out problems you have with someone and an event such as that was not either of those. Completely classless.
@alexfahnestalk7469

i don't think it deflects blame. it sounded like he wanted to try and not be self-absorbed in his guilt, based on what he said about not trying to be ashamed of himself. i think it could be interpreted in any number of ways. celebrity apologies are kinda dumb to me because they're structured around the masses showing forgiveness and acceptance, but no words can persuade that many people to believe. the only person you can be sure that your apology is effective for is yourself. you can't hold any expectation for anyone else to accept and forgive you.

I think doing it 4 months later is potentially way more genuine and substantial. It sounds like he actually took time, went to therapy, figured out the root cause of his behaviour, and tried to correct it going forward, and only once he fully understood the circumstances did he feel he could truly apologize. The fact that it's so late, rather than just apologizing right away to make it go away, makes it seem like he genuinely wanted to grow and prevent this from happening again. He held onto the shame for months rather than taking the easy road out. Or it's just a PR thing.

It is telling that he says I'm sorry to his wife for embarrassing her, he talks a long time about how he let down his fans and their feelings regarding it. All he says regarding Chris though is "I apologise" and that's it. It doesn't help it feel sincere when your apology to your wife's embarrassment and the fans are more in depth and sincere sounding than the only person that was actually harmed by your actions.

Holy shit, you never win when you apologize online, it's SO true. The internet has taken a simple concept like an apology and rendered it absolutely useless, and because of that people are essentially encouraging content creators/influencers/celebs to just ignore any valid criticism. EDIT: I'm speaking generally here, not so much about Will's apology, but the concept of apologizing online.
@casusbelli9225
Жыл бұрын
I'd argue it's not just the internet, but the western culture itself. In eastern cultures you apologize, and everything is ok. In western - ESPECIALLY american - you apologize, you admit your guilt, and it's pretty much just inviting to be wrestled into paying up, either through suing, or some other way, which makes people only double down after apology.

I don't think he was faking sincerity. He knows that the world views him as the "safe" black man, so when he disrupts that image, it's shameful for him. What's more, Chris has been coming after Jada for _years_ . This wasn't the first event -- far from it.

She's the one that deserves the apology, because without this slap, the whole world would still be talking about her avant-garde comedic performance.

She didn't hold a physical gun to Will but when you're in a toxic relationship seeking validation from your partner the slightest provaction will have you acting out of character.
