In my opinion, if your English has reached a certain level, it's worth trying to learn a new language using English rather than your mother tongue. This approach can help you maintain your English proficiency, practice the basics, and acquire the new language from a different perspective. Of course, it depends on the individual situation, but sometimes learning a new language through English might be easier since they share more similarities.

I've used English to learn more French and the other way around. More recently I've been using both French and English to learn more German. I also have resources in German to learn Russian. Lindie Botes, a polyglot from South Africa, says that she learns the new language in the one previously learned to maintain the previous one.

In my experience, the answer, unfortunately, is YES, the second or third foreign language definitely interferes with my English, and especially did when I was already in my 30s and now when I'm 55...

The thing is, if you are an advanced speaker or a native speaker of English, learning to speak a new language or speaking several languages regularly won't necessarily degrade your English, except for a potential loss of fluency due to lack of practice which you can easily get back. However, what wasn't mentioned in this video is that it may slightly affect your native accent. What do I mean by this? Every language has specific tongue movements and sound articulations, and sometimes these can influence your native accent unless you have precise control over your mouth movements. This is why actors excel at mimicking accents - they possess precise control over their mouths. I know a native speaker who speaks four languages, and if you listen closely, you can sometimes detect influences from one of the other languages in their accent. Of course, you need a keen ear to pick up on these subtleties, as they're often very slight. Ps Take Forest Whitaker for the King of Scotland he was so frightened of slipping back to his American accent he stayed in East African accent everyday and eventually became so proficient in the accent that he was you couldn't tell him from a native. Forest Whitaker then states that after the film was done it took him a long time to shake the accent.

I'm a Chinese native speaker, and I have spent the last ten years mostly in English-speaking countries. My Chinese level definitely suffers from not being used enough (my Chinese literary ability was very good even among native speakers, and I was an avid writer and reader in Chinese). Will I ever forget Chinese? No, but I don't think I can use figurative speeches or write vocally aesthetic sentences as freely as when I used it a lot more as a kid. And I speak German, so whenever I encounter a German word (especially names) in English I can only say it in German pronunciation. My English certainly suffers from it...

Actually, Spanish is my first language and I feel english is messing with it. I find myself switching adjectives or conjugating verbs in weird ways. 💁‍♀

I have problems even retrieving words in my own language! What's more, sometimes I know a word in English or French that I don't know its equivalent in Spanish, there is not 1 to 1 equivalents for all concepts/words in different languages, but the word in the foreing language perfectly describes what I mean.😆 I can usually block my mother tongue and I just mix words from other languages, but sometimes I mix words even from my own language.🙃 Some sounds from a foreing language help us learn sounds from another language ("u" and "eu" in French are similar to ü and ö in German). But what helps us more is to realize that there are more sounds than those of our mother tongue and to excercise to understand and make them. With such a training we can go on learning other different sounds and languages. Furthermore, I've been training myself ton speak English with a French accent and, recently, speak French with an American accent in a way to be more aware of the sounds and accents of both languages.🗼🗽

Thank you Hadar ! I can spend time to learn languages. I prioritize : English and italian using them every single day (for yoga, guided meditations, embodiment dance and so on) and German just 30 minutes per day because my ears and my brain enjoy the process. I'm so happy and grateful for this opportunity 🎉❤. 😊 never bored, never overwhelmed, just joyful. And I accept the mistakes. It's the best way to learn 😊

I wish I had received that advice back, when I was already pretty fluent in English but still wanted to improve it considerably and also wanted to learn Spanish. I lived in Florida where the number of Spanish speaker is high and also a good chunk of Brazilian Português (my first language). Every time I was trying to have a conversation in Spanish, English got in the way. I only realized it when I got blank looks. So I gave up. Silly me. Missed a great opportunity. Then I moved to NY, although many Spanish speaker are here too, I was in an environment with no Spanish being spoken.

If I were to decide to improve my French, which is pretty rusty, I think I would continue to spend a certain amount of time each day *enjoying* content that interests me in English, maybe 30 minutes or even just 15.

For me, learning a third language improved my english a lot. Because I learned english at a very young age, I never really learned grammar correctly. By studying it, I became aware of all major grammar topics and refreshed english. I do agree though, it needs to be at certain level to have a positive effect.
