Do you really need feedback to improve? The answer might surprise you

Join My English Mindset and transform the way you think and feel about your English: bit.ly/3WdR0r1
Do you need feedback to improve your English? You might think that the ONLY way to improve is to have a teacher or person that can give you feedback and corrections on everything that you say. While having a teacher that can give you feedback is certainly valuable, you can absolutely improve without having a teacher or anyone to give you feedback when you practice!
In this video, I’ll talk about the pros and cons of receiving feedback, and how you can give yourself feedback - no teacher required!
Now I want to hear from you. Have you found a strategy to practice giving yourself feedback on your own? Do you have any tips for the rest of us? Let me know in the comments!

OMG! I found you because my yoga teacher always starts our classes with the phrase: 'Hello Folks!' and, as a native Spanish speaker, I always understood: 'Hello, Fox' hahaha. Anyway, one day I was in front of my computer and I searched: 'How to pronounce the word "Folks" and you appeared first in the search list. I am SO grateful for that. You're amazing, you explain all my doubts and I absolutely love that you're Israeli. My favorite people in the whole world, thank you so much.

Hadar, I recommend your channel to a lot of folks I know who are learning English. Much of your content offers great advice for language learning in general. One thing I do for self-feedback when learning another language, after recording a video and listening to myself, is to create subtitles in the language. I always catch more mistakes that way and am able to re-write what would be the correct language and then I practice that - verbally and hopefully with a conversation partner.

Hadar, this video couldn't have come at a better time. The content you produce is incredibly amazing! I have been thinking a lot about feedback for a while. As an English language teacher that I am, I think feedback is essential for learning. I agree with you that it is really important to learn how and when to give feedback. However, I sometimes have the feeling that some students have a hard time receiving feedback. It rarely happens, but it does sometimes. It'd be great to hear what you have to say about this topic. Cheers! Love your videos!

Receiving feedback helped me grasp how to improve my pronunciation (the most underrated topic in language learning) and had been crucial. Having learned the muscle work of American English (as a former student of yours, dear Hadar), to my surprise (!), my speaking entirely transformed 😀 However, there is no "magic" outside, only within ourselves. Daily speaking, listening, reading, and writing gave me the confidence for English to become part of my identity.

I understand your viewpoint about feedback in language learning, but I have a slightly different take on it. Feedback is essential, and we get it all the time as it's an inherit part of our interaction with the world. When you're attempting to convey a concept and sense that it's not entirely clear to your listener, that's a form of feedback, even if you're not consciously labeling it as such. You get feedback from the people around you all the time when you actively engage in communication. That's why conversation is so much more powerful than practicing by speaking alone. Explicit feedback, as you mentioned, can indeed be a valuable component of deliberate practice and can help accelerate the learning process. It offers a structured way to identify areas for improvement and can be motivating as it provides a sense of progress. The mindset of the learner, whether they have a growth or fixed mindset, is an interesting aspect to consider as it can influence how they approach feedback and learning in general. It's a topic that adds depth to the discussion of the role of feedback in language acquisition.

A Significant Issue in an Otherwise Excellent Video There's a significant problem in the excellent video. You missed mentioning "parenting." It's vital, though not widely recognized. In our small learning community, we focus a great deal on parenting (and nurturing "parents"). We blend self-guided learning (as demonstrated effectively in the video - utilizing technology) with occasional guidance from external tutors (as you also noted).

I hear you and I completely understand your frustration! The reason why I speak this way is because this is my natural way of speaking and that’s how I’m at my best. If I were to slow myself down, I wouldn’t have the same flow and fluency. I also tend to speak a little slower than native speakers - so if your goal is to train your ear to understand others, this could potentially be a good exercise (and don’t feel bad for not understanding everything!). Anyway, thanks for the feedback 🙏🏽
