I think that maybe that change of voice might be that we try to imitate the voice of the person from whom we learned English. What do you think?

Hadar, I also think that even when you find your pitch, the voice changes at least a bit... I can feel a intense vibration in my throat while I speak English and when I speak portuguese (my mother tongue), I don't feel that much. It feels like my voice comes from my chest and not from my throat.

As we used to hear from you in English, I thought for a while ,when u spoke in Hebrew as if you had been an English native speaker but NON Hebrew native one 😂😂.. Secondly, only NOW ! I just have realized why some peaple keep saying Hmmmm..without any potential reason , (at least in my previous point of view) when they speak up even in their native language...

I sound different in every other language I speak...but I love it. It is like having different lives.

Yeap me too, in polish(my native language) i speak normally, in english i speak a little bit higher, in french and german a little bit lower and in czech i speak really high. Funny how it changes depending on a language.

Same! My voice is really high and pitchy in polish, in german it gets lower, my english accent is a weird mix beetween australian and american accent, in french i speak really softly and delicate and i basically scream while speaking russian.

I'm Polish and it is the same with me. When I speak English I kind of feel like different person. I know some Russian and it's the same when I speak in this language and then I feel a bit different from both my Polish and English "personalities".

@@Camel9991 I'm Polish too and I prefer to speak English bcuz I feel more confident in English and I speak English better than Polish. English is easier than Polish, obviously. Even when I speak Polish, so many people ask my why I have English accent and sounds so American/British. Oops... actually I have no control over my accent. :/

That happens with every language. We are able to speak faster in our native tongue...

I only got comfortable speaking English after I read 7 books out loud for 2 or 3 weeks, I read out loud in English for years but not that much in a really short period of time and because of that the muscle of my mouth and brain got used to it, and it's never a problem anymore, I can speak for hours now

My mother tongue is Czech and my voice is very high pitched. In English, my voice drops by quarter tone, not much a little and then I speak Spanish, or at least still learn, and my voice is pitched higher by semitone.

I feel like every language has its own personality and gives you different features when you speak. For example when I speak English I feel much more confident and happy. Japanese makes me speak higher and I sound cute and bubbly. This is really fun 😀

Fully agree... It actually goes further than just because you do not feel comfortable with the language or nervous... Every language has its own sounds and that's what gives us the feeling of having a different tone between languages.

watermelonxxx, I think it’s more than that. Italian and Spanish have a similar phonological system because they are related languages but English doesn’t. In Spanish and Italian sounds are generated at the tip of the tongue, while in English it is generated on the back of the tongue. Try the R sound in each language and you’ll see the difference.

As a french, I noticed my voice changes when I'm speaking English or Spannish, because French is quite neutral in tone when English and Spannish are more musical languages. But I'm shoked too when I hear my recored voice and always think " well is THIS my real voice ? ". Thank you for your advices, your channel is very helpful.

Many many years ago i took a few hours of acting and diction lessons in italian, my mother tongue language, and it really helped me improve my english, spanish and french pronounciation. It was tough but real fun!

Thanks for this great video! I’ve been having trouble figuring out how my voice should sound when speaking English. I thought changing it on purpose was making me not be a real me before. But after watching this, I leaned I might want to find and create the English version of me by trying to find my comfortable range of voice. our voices change in part because of different vowel shapes in different languages. like when i speak french, i find my voice is lower, because the vowels tend to need to resonate more in the lower/center of my mouth vs. english's (respectively) pretty bright vowels. our voices might also change because of where emphasis naturally falls with most words (in french, it's almost always the ends of words or sentences, for example) or in different parts of a sentence. just some food for thought!

I also thought that the vowel nature in each language is a key in different voices of the same speaker. Though I don't know much about French or Hebrew. Hadar's voice in English sounded a bit higher because of the variety of English vowel sounds (esp. the pitches and the lengths) while Hebrew vowels sounded quite short to me (I can't analyze other characteristics of Hebrew vowel sounds---I'm just a lay person).

I'm so glad I've found your channel and many videos just describe 100% how I feel. Thanks a lot for sharing all this information!

Outstanding! 🙌🙌🙌 Love it! I was shocked to hear your voice in Hebrew!👀👀👀 I feel like I know you pretty well in English and suddenly you were a different person! You really do sound like someone else! It's definitely not just about the different intonation, shorter vowels, different sounds, it's about your voice placement. It's different. Your voice is beautiful in both languages though, clear, rich, and confident. My favorite videos of yours were "Understanding American English vowels - Masterclass" and "American intonation - what they don't teach you in school" until now but I am not sure anymore! I think this one wins! It's brilliant! ✨✨✨ I've listened to different explanations about the voice placement, but you have a magical way of explaining things, and things usually "click" when I hear your take on a certain topic. I'm pretty confident while speaking English, but I don't think I've found my optimal voice placement yet. My voice sounds pretty much the same in Serbian and English. I'm not saying that my "Serbian" voice doesn't sound good in English, it does, but I feel there's room for improvement. I think I can find a placement within my voice that will serve English a bit better. I will try the humming exercise and watch this video again and again. I'm interested to learn more from you about this topic. It would be cool if you could share more exercises for finding the "optimal voice". 💕💕💕

Yeah. This is definitely true. I totally change my voice when i speak in English that's because i know the placement. Usually native speakers speak very low placement but when I switch to my native language it's completely awkward lol. 😃☺👍

thanks. i'm from surabaya indonesia. last week i met 7 or 8 tourists from korea china thailand etc in surabaya. of course we speak english as a lingua franca with our native accents wkwkwk. but the most important thing is we understand each other.

I think it's normal, because I use to change my voice even when I'm speaking on the phone, specially if it is with some stranger.

I always found that my voice changes according to the language I am speaking, but I thought it was just me. However I've realised it's all about resonance, vibration, pronunciation and so. I'm a native Brazilian speaker, and my voice is massively different when speak in a foreign language. Very interesting topic you have discussed Hadar, thank you!!

When it comes to fluency - I got a lot better after practicing English tongue twisters. I know it's strange yet while practicing tongue twisters there's an incentive to speak in a faster pace and to connect or link sounds that require effort to place together. There's also the fact that one is going back to the basics in terms of differentiating sounds that otherwise might sound the same to a non-native English speaker. Some people think it's a waste of time - it worked for me.

Thank you so much for this lovely video. I’m working SO hard on my English at the last two years, reading so many books (aloud) on a daily basis just to find my own English voice (indeed it’s different from the Hebrew one exactly like you mentioned). It’s a struggle indeed ! There are days where things works well, days where I feel comfortable reading using my own voice, though at the other hand, the opposite exists as well (like today for instance) where I literally struggle to utter a ‘reasonable’ English word. So frustrating sometimes. Thank you again for this video. Seeing you speaking English serves as a great example that it’s possible.

I'm finding this with Norwegian (as a 2nd language) as well. It's so weird. Thanks for your video! It's applicable for all foreign languages! :)

Right on, Hadar! I'm a bilingual live announcer / MC / voice actor in Japanese and English, and before I started my career, my American voice-over teacher taught me about finding your optimal voice pitch using a similar technique to humming. In the Japanese language, on the other hand, what is considered a good pitch is way higher because a good voice is supposed to sound young, joyful, and clear. I think my body has adopted the optimal vocal range over the years and I speak both languages in the same way, but it takes time. So don't pretend to speak like someone you're not though having a role model is all good. Your voice is your asset.

@@hadar.shemesh Italian has few words with the accent on the last syllable and that can be a problem for lyricists ... English/French/Portuguese sound sweeter to me, more "elastic": in fact lots of Italian singers find it easier to sing in English than in Italian :)

My first impression when you were talking in Hebrew was that I found the intonation quite similar to Dutch, even some consonant pronuntiation. :P Interesting language to learn though, I always was curious to learn it. :)

I think that you have to change your voice. There is stuff happening like lifting the soft palet etc wich is also part of making an English native accent

In my opinion, i got a good accent even though i feel that i sound like my native language, but my father told me that my voice change but i didn't feel that my accent has changed a lot. I think that your accent change is because we are using not the same movements of tonge. And that's all but if you hear someone that's trying to imitate the american accent that would be pretty fake. so my conclusion a real accent is when you pronounce well words.

I've just realised that my regular voice has a lower pitch and I don't like it, but I do that when speaking English. I think I need to improve my native language voice first. Maybe that's because of my personality, I'm shy.

I feel the same way! It feels like a lower tone is easier to "conceal" or harder for others to notice. Being shy, this is something that I lean towards a lot! But lately I've been trying to practice by using two instances of a voice chat program (Discord) and listening myself during normal day-to-day stuff. I feel like it's helping me, and I hope you also find something that helps you. Good luck!

What if I feel weirder when speaking in my native language than English? ...

When I lower my voice I sound more like a native English speaker but when I go above, my french Canadian accent comes to the forefront.

Hey Hadar! I've been looking for a video on voice placement in English for a long time, and finally here it is!I can't thank you enough! My throat used to hurt something awful whenever I spoke English for a relatively long time and that would lead to selfconsciousness and mistakes.I'd read that my voice should resonate on my chest and that I had to speak from the back of my throat, but it was hard to figure out exactly how to do that.So the humming exercise was just magical!Thanks again!

I was listening to some audio messages I sent to a friend and I noticed I have a vocal fry when I speak English and omg it's so annoying 💀 I do it unconscioully of course, but now I'm more self aware of it. Also, I say "like" way too much, I need to work on that

8:57 sounding like a Kardashian lol I always go up my hum level… and sound super gay… even in italian… I mean I am gay… but… idk is weird… lol

When I heard some Americans I notice their voice resonates in the chest and vibrates the throat more than Brazilians speakers.

But I like when my voice changes in English, it sounds so deep and manly.

My voice gets hoarse when I speak english, I don't know why..

I think it is because my first movies in english were mafia, gangster, noir and bondlike... My first english series was PEEKY FOOKIN BLAINDAHRS
