Thanks for sharing this video. It brings back many memories from the two bugs I drove. Good to see that you got the bug up and running. You continue to amaze me how much you know about cars and how you can diagnose the problems and them solve the problem. Glad to see Jack working with you to get the bug back to your shop. i will be interested in seeing what you end up doing to this VW bug..

Ooh how I love that bug. I'm going to call him Herbie❤👍My very first car was a 1969 VW fast back. It looked more like a stink bug, than a bug lol. I absolutely LOVE DRIVING A VW. They are such fun little cars. I'm an old granny of 62 years, I've been battling cancer the last 3 years, and I'd love to have a VW BUG again. I just love driving them. I've been wishing I could get one and thinking about it alot this last year or so. Maybe some day..in the meantime..I'll watch and see what you and Jack do with Herbie. I just love Jack's giggle, it picks my spirit right up. Thanks for sharing, sure enjoyed it.

Little bug is in great shape! I'd love to have it as a daily driver! Little cosmetic repairs, and a carb kit, likely a dry air cleaner kit, and cleaning up the wiring (Every VW I've dealt with has had a mess for wiring). Always wanted to own a Beatle, but never got the chance, and now, it's likely I'd never be able to afford one in good running condition, sadly. Helped work on a couple, back in the 1980's, in Germany. GI owned, German spec. models. Early 1970's models, I believe. Factory wiring looked like they just tossed a couple rolls of wire at it and let it sort itself out. That was usually the first thing we worked on. And usually took the longest to make look right and work right. Had to completely re-wire one of them, using a factory wiring diagram, that we had to get translated from German to English. Guy that owned the car gave it to the new owner when he sold it. That one had the clutch in the stick, instead of the floor. Think they called it the AutoStick? Strangest transmission I ever dealt with.

Hello, my name is Ken and since retiring back in 08/21 I have been doing some "buy them, try to get them running" adventures!' So far, not too much success, but am glad to see someone else in my state of Oklahoma doing some of the same things. I had some business cards made and have been handing them out here and there when I see something sitting in a pasture or back yard that might be nice to get back on the road again. Loved this video of the Bug, I tried to buy three and make one, but they were too far gone for my mechanical skills and budget. Anyway, keep posting the videos and sometime soon I'll send you an email to ask you some questions about becoming a KZread guy!?! Thanks, Ken

Noticed part two of this posted recently and realised I hadn't watched part one, so decided to fix that. When you said a one lane bridge on the way home that was not what I was picturing. I was thinking a bridge with only one lane open for traffic going both ways so you may have had to sit and wait to go across or if you got stuck (I didn't think you would) that traffic in both directions would be held up. So glad you got it back without any real issues, now off to watch part two.

Engine sounds really good! I would check the carburetor to see if it needs rebuilt or check for any air leaks. Cause I could tell how it doesn’t want to idle and sometimes with a vacuum leak or any air leaks it won’t stay running without revving it. Great Video! Nice Car! 👍

If it will run like that, but not idle, check the idle fuel cut off solenoid. There’s a small Dashpot screwed into the side of the carburetor that has two electrical wires going to it. This is to keep the engine from running on i.e. dieseling after the ignition is shut off. Take the two wires off the dash pot and unscrew it from the side of the carburetor you’ll see a little plunger. Hook the wires back up and turn the ignition on. When 12 V is applied to it the plunger should retract opening up the idle fuel circuit. If the plunger does not retract when 12 V is applied to it, or you do not have 12 V there with the key on, the car will not idle. Sometimes you can shoot some WD-40 in them and free them up if they are just stuck, or if you are in a jam, and the plunger does not retract when 12 V is applied you can take a pair of needle, nose, pliers, and snap the plunger end off, and screw the Dashpot back in the Carburetor to plug the hole, and it will idle just fine. The only problem you have is, you will have no ideal, cut off circuit i.e. run on/dieseling protection..

I think that those are not the og seats. I had a 1974 VW Bug years ago and it was totally original when I got it. There should be a little lever at the very front of the seat that you can release and the whole seat will just slide out you don't even need any tools to remove the seats if they are og VW seats. It looks like it also has a quite pack exhaust on it. Mine had a quite pack/header on it but I took the muffler off and ran a stinger with the baffle out. It was just a stock 1600 but it sounded like it was a "hot rod" lol. The thing that I really liked about it was if I had had a bad day at work when I got into the Bug all of the bad stuff from work just went away and life was good. Wish I had never got rid of it. I and it fixed up in what's known as The California Look.

Here’s a helpful hint! When looking at the schematic you print out from the internet, you have to turn it upside down when under the trunk lid for the orientation to be correct. I know this because I bought a 72 beetle and all the wiring was on the fuse box reversed. I figured the last guy looked at the schematic wrong! I just switched everything back and now it’s fine!

They are a RUGGET LITTLE AIR COOLED ENGINE that have a magnet in the bottom of the oil panbolt to collect steel particles that can wear an engine oil pump out if not captured by the magnet. They had nice after market kits for rebuilding that little motor. You get 4 new cylinders with matching pistons and rings, rist pins and retainers crank berrings end play bearings. The 4 cylinders come with valve seats already installed you have to seat valves. They were really nice little motor that any KID could learn.I had the FAST BACK engine, they called it the PANKAKE ENGINE with two carborators that had to be sycronized with what you called a UNISON.My wife loved that car with the wined crank SUN ROOF.The heaters in Volkswagons that year were very good for keeping a case of beer COLD?In other words THEY WERE NOT WOURTH SHIT!!!

The taillights tell me it's at least a 1973. On the older cars part of the numbers on the taillight tell you what year it is (old trick). But that would be a "Super Beatle" meaning it has a McPherson Strut front end. I've had many VW bugs, mostly between 1965 and 1969 w/torsion bar front suspension. Used to make baja bugs out of them and they were great off road and in the snow. Fun little cars, good gas mileage too around 30 mpg. You're lucky cars are pretty rust free for the most part in your neck of the woods, unlike where I live. The wiring can be a project all in itself, but you know that from your other bug. lol Great video.

It's a 1974 Standard beetle, not a Super Beetle. The generator and air cleaner are not correct for that car...it should have an alternator and a paper air cleaner assembly. The plug on the side is some kind of dealership "diagnostic' plug. Really nice car...wouldn't take much to return it to original!

@@SpeedBumpGarage You're welcome. Haha, I don't think there was much actual diag ability. I think there was a TDC sensor in the block somewhere and it probably had ability to read dwell and timing advance and voltage but not much more. More of a selling point in those days tot ell the customer that the dealer could "put it on the computer". Some times you'll see the same type of thing on domestics cars during the 70's. Also if you're curious, you can get the engine code off the block under the generator stand and determine of it's the original engine.

Hey Kent, another fun video and a cool looking car. My only experience with a VW Bug was when I was a little boy, maybe four or five years old. My mother's best friend had one and she gave my mother and me a ride to the local butcher shop to pick up the beef from a cow we had butchered. I was crammed into the backseat amongst boxes and boxes of meat. After a bit, I realized that the funny looking piece of meat on the top of the box next to me was the tongue from the cow! I'm sure you, Jack and AJ will have a better experience with this bug than I had lol! How are the F-100 projects coming?

@@SpeedBumpGarage LOL When I had my 1303S, I wish mine came with headrests which were new features. Yea, mine was European version. I don’t care much about the rest but the headlights were something special. They were not sealed beam types mandated by DOT in ‘70s. FYI The shape of glass headlights looked exactly same as ‘74 European Porsche 911 headlight glass cover. They were protruding flat angled glass cover not recessed around bezel rings like most U.S. VW.

I tell ya I just bought a new Nissan, my car got flooded, so insurance company totalled it and I was in a bind with not much time to look for a car, so against everything I believe in I bought a brand new car. During the closing of course they were trying to sell all kinds of extended warranty stuff and showed me some invoices for some of the repair work when some of the computed modules in the newer Nissan cars have. One was for 14 grand, one was 8 grand, ect...hell just to get the windshield replaced the camera thing mounted to windshield cost a grand to be remounted and calibrated. So I see this, and I'm thinking we have screwed our selves over the years putting more and more computers and airbags and all that in cars as far as maintenance costs. 20 airbags in my new car. If the accident doesn't kill you the damn airbags probably will. Unfortunately car manufacturers will never be able to go back to such a simple design as that beetle due to all the safety requirements and all that, that are forced on car companies today. But I'm about 6 years from retirement and when that day comes I will definitely be looking for an old vw, or similar simple design, work on it yourself type car. Thanks for the video.
