Will Israel be allowed to continue its Gaza starvation strategy? | The Bottom Line

US Senator Chris Van Hollen says it is time for the Biden administration to tell Israel, “If you continue to ignore us, there will be consequences.”
Senator Van Hollen, who is one of seven senators (out of 100) to have called for a permanent ceasefire in Israel’s war on Gaza, tells host Steve Clemons that Hamas’s surprise attack last year “does not justify the humanitarian catastrophe that we’re witnessing in Gaza”.
The Democratic senator from Maryland said that the United States has to use “all the levers of our power and influence” to allow more aid to get to starving Palestinians.

If Israel and their IDF soldiers find ONE scalpel in a truck full with medical sets for performing caesaerian sections, they will keep the whole truck and won't let it go in, because they say Hamas could use the medical scalpel as a weapon. So, no caesaerian sections can be performed and the pregnant women and their babies die or are born with heavy disablities because of lack of oxygene and other life-threatening medical complications. The bombs, honestly, are being applied by Biden. Although Van Höllen did vote to send more to Israel, and I also disagree with it, that vote was strategic. Since then, he had added language to that bill that requires a close watch on Israel's behavior and, if it violates international law, results in an end to those weapons transfers. As a Senator, he doesn't have any direct power. Like all Powers to conduct foreign policy and direct the military, that's up to the President. I do think Van Hollen is pressuring Biden as best he can. I don't believe he is lying or that he doesn't care. He's an ally.

This war should not have continued past the two months. The very fact that it has been going on since its onset and is still going indefinitely shows weak leadership and weak institutions! The dialogue between America and Israel is not yielding any attainable results, instead, it is going in circles! We seem to be spinning around the same problems and the same outcomes without any way out! Surely, this confirms a deficiency in the political system either in Israel or in the US. Both systems are in need of reforms and adjustment. Mistakes were made right from the first time of the bombardments up until now. The start of this raging war has led to more devastation and more casualties! To shut down UNRWA was a mistake! To shut off electricity, gas, and water ! Was a second mistake. Carpet bombing and destroying homes, hospitals, churches and mosques was a third mistake!! Literally speaking everything what Israel has done is still doing is grave and beyond the limitation of the ethics of war! Who values life anymore in this part of the world: Israel and America? Surely the majority of the American people are protesting loudly against this war. As to Israel, many of the Israelis who are learning about the gravity of the situation are rising up against Netanyahu! Surely, what is to be democratic, is to listen to people’s voices! Doing otherwise is a call for fascism, dictatorship or authoritarianism! When it comes to a deliberate mass starvation and persecution of people who have been displaced more than 7 to 8 times out of their homes and shelters are signs of a failure of a country and a catastrophe which can be easily avoided! The world is changing and people’s views of America and Israel have changed and they are getting bitter and full of resentments. These people do not need to be Palestinian or Hamas to feel sickened by these types of attitudes and behaviour!!! From all over the world and in all countries, we see that people’s minds have changed towards supporting the United States and feel they need to seek help or allegiance to Russia as it is also a world power! America had a bad past and had a bad reputation worldwide but now it has become even more heightened due to the Israeli war against people in Gaza in the recent months! What Netanyahu has done over the last 6 months is much worse than any other Prime Minister in Israel has ever done! In fact, Netanyahu is leading Israel and the whole world into a dismal future! we need to change of hands soon!!! 😢😢😢😢😢

Senator Van Cowardly, you need to say something like "it is absolutely outrageous that the leaders of our government, or any Presidential administration, is unwilling to criticize and condemn the state of Israel for its illegal occupation and its serious war crimes and crimes of humanity including a long drawn out genocidal process that began in 1947 by the U.S. backed Zionist Army and earlier by the British Army". Senator Cowardly, please explain to us why the British army began attacking and tried to force out a very peaceful Palestinian population at at time where there were no Muslim militants in Palestine. Our foreign policy needs to be radially changed so that it is no longer under the influence of the arms industry or any lobbyist group, like AIPAC, that does not work for the interests of peace in the world. This sea port idea is a desperate attempt of the Biden administration to prevent his popularity from totally crashing. Both you and Biden insult our intelligence to suggest that we simply can't send in our military to escort the truck convoy in and to force a ceasefire. But the situation is simply a matter of getting humanitarian aid to them so they don't starve to death. Their homeland has been obliterated using our tax payers dollars and our political consent in allowing it to happen. We put Israel on the map, and we are responsible for rebuilding the entire Gaza infrastructure and for driving as many illegal Jewish settlers out of the West Bank. That is the least we can do. Our government should have the political courage and the basic human morality to say and do at least that much

I would've preferred an omission of "right to defend" and an inclusion of "soon to recognize independent Palestine nation" comments but nonetheless thank you to Al Jazeera (and to Senator Van Hollen) for this interview. If Israel can't be "persuaded" by reason, sense of justice or humanity - then political, economic and military means should be leveraged. There is no other choice. Permitting a rogue regime to continue to act above domestic and international laws while thousands continue to suffer and die will cost the US, it's allies (not to mention Jews around the world) more than we realize.

If this is the most pro-Palestinian the Democrats have, we're in bad shape. When U.S. Senators come on your show, you really need to carefully examine and critique the language that is being used, and you should it in front of them. This guy can't even use the words criticize and condemn, and the concept of using our military to take the action that has been long needed doesn't even enter his brain. That's horrific. And he still uses the very insulting phrase that Israel has the right to defend itself. What about the Palestinians. They don't have a right to defend themselves? This Senator, and our hegemonic political order in general, presumes that we have to respect Israel's illegal actions of occupying and controlling the Palestinian territories as if it was their land, and that borders on insanity. Cleary there are powerful forces behind this rationale, and the most powerful force I could think of in relation to this situation would be the arms industry. The arms industry invests in the media conglomerates, they buy out the entire election process, the write their own public policy through the corporate lobbyist who are the ones who are able to engage in a very thriving democratic process where the voice of the general public is basically shut out when it comes to policy making. The sheer loathing and contempt that the corporate elite has for the U.S. public is stunning.

No one knows what its like to be starved like that better than them, but instead of advocating, it never to happen again. THEY are the ones doing it. People call it multi-generational trauma. I don't buy it. I'm a child abuse survivor from both of my narcissist parents, who were abused themselves. I didn't turn around and abuse my own kids because i was. In fact, my traumatic experiences make me determined not to have kids to break the cycle of abuse. That's the right response to multi-generational trauma.

Allowing air drops of supplies by different countries, and allowing a new sea port to be built so that thousands of tons of aid can reach the Gazan civilians via ships. All this while Israel is at war with Gaza's military rulers inside Gaza.!
