After being diagnosed with cancer two months ago, everything has changed for me. And not all for the worst. It’s opened my eyes to what In life is really important. It’s not running, racing, sports ect. It’s family friends , kids, life itself! I strive everyday to get back to where I was in my training and racing life but may never get there but, that’s alright. A whole new world has open to me. Keep fighting keep striving, never stop!

Yesterday I ran with a 77 year old man that had hip surgery in August of 2023. He's back! Screws were taken out 4 weeks ago. He just signed up for a 10K. Good Luck coming back. If a 77 year old can, so can you!

Seth, nice Vlog. I'm 71 and last year I lost my way in running. A time of introspection. I began to hate doing the long runs. My long runs got shorter, rarely over six miles. I asked the same question, "Will I ever race again?" I faltered in the Cooper River Bridge Run. And I knew what the problem was; the long run and winter, the snow, the cold, the lack of sun, the impossible to run muddy trails. All of it ganged up on my enjoyment of running. Reset. What worked in the past? Running every other day and being OK if I miss a day here and there. Fun Runs; days when I stop and talk to the birders, the fishermen, and the gold panners along Clear Creek. I'm Back! Tomorrow I will run the Hayden Cog Run.. I'm excited. It should be fun. Have a great day.

I ran my first 5k in 1983 2 weeks before our first child was born. I was 32. Life got super busy with family and career. I ran my second 5k 31 years later. Iam 72 now have run many many marathons (Boston x3, NY, Chicago, Pikes Peak, Leadville etc etc) and many trail ultras and even set a few multi day fkts. So much fun. But Don’t be afraid of a break - take care of your health and running will be there.

I'll be 31 soon, and I'll never be in that kind of shape ever again, especially because i work full time. I decided to run a half marathon (colfax half, denver) as a way to stay motivated to work out. The biggest exercise has been in humility. The change of mindset from trying to win races to having fun. It's great that you think in terms of your running in decades. Life is life and we all have our separate paths and we do the best that we can so don't let anyone's comment pull your thoughts away from doing what is best for you and your family. Congrats by the way on the new additions. That's joyous news in itself! As an "older" running, late 50s I certainly have those thoughts from time to time about whether I want to continue doing marathons or heck, even just racing anymore. It's part of the process and at the end of the day as long as we're able to just get out there and feel good about the fact that we're blessed to have running as our passion, we can't really ask for too much more. Keep on keeping on Seth. It's been a fun ride so far.

You're not accountable to people on the internet. You're not disappointing anyone. Keep those priorities straight. Life is fleeting. You have one family to nurture and love, beauty to seek, and joy to find in running. All this will pass and you will wonder why you kept trying to please random strangers (even if we are nice) on the net.

It's crazy how your self-view as a runner is hard to keep, with gaining almost 26 kilos in two years in the struggle up to the break. It's so hard to get back into it after life circumstances of kids etc. But as you said here, YES I WILL RACE AGAIN, but life comes first. And no, you do not disappoint! You have always been open and honest here and that's why we keep following your YT! So keep it up and H5 From Denmark. :) Let's get back into shape again together! Hey Seth - I’ve been a follower for a while now and want to thank you for your community, lessens, and sharing who you are with is. I’m currently 30 and have been running since I was 12. I ran in grade school, high school, and college. I stopped during my junior year - I realized I wasn’t enjoying it but even more than that it was consuming my life in a negative way. I stepped away and didn’t know if I’d ever run again. I started cycling long distances and loved that. I also started living my life. After about 4 years of not running, I had the itch again. I started slow and easy with no goals in mind. I let Running guide me instead of me force the Running. It’s been 4 years and I’m happy, healthy, and training for ultras. Reflecting on this, i do my best to take a step back and see the longer view of time. Me stopping running for 4 years has allowed me to continue running (hopefully) well into my future years. Wishing you the best in whatever you discern 🙏💚

I’m on a reset right now being one month out of surgery of a torn labrum repair. No work and no workouts gives you a lot of time. My relationship with Jesus has been critical during this time. I realized that I put too much ego into my success as a runner and coach. Time to dial it back and give it up to God. Thanks Seth!

This is a good one, boss. QD: yes, after a couple years of becoming a runner, at 4x years old, and 5 marathons… I finally do a proper temp check and actually legit rest after races. Then ease back into base building for the next block -which starts in about 5 weeks for me!

I had a major setback in my routine weekly running schedule. Major foot fusion and won’t be able to run or cycle for at least 4-5 months and it’s really killing me mentally. A runner for 16 years non stop. Not sure how strong I will come back even as age is there too. I am patient and hopeful. Runners inspire me.

Hey Seth, have you ever run a race for fun,? I do and I live it! I turn 61 in a few weeks. I put in 800-1100 miles a year running, plus I cross train. I set my ego aside and just enjoy the adventure! PRs in the last 5 years: 21:23 5K, 45:23 10K, 1:42 Half Marathon. 3:58 Marathon. I go out for the experience! Look at Meb, Jared Ward, Uta Pippig. Make it fun! I pace 3-5 Half marathons a year. Life is too short not to have fun! Now butter meets bread! Enjoy your day!!!!!!

Last 12 months has been rough for me last year my mother was diagnosed with cancer I was her care giver and that took all my free time away. I ran 2-3 times a week. In May I ran a marathon in honor of her knowing her time is limited, I tried matching her pain by running with no training and I did. That took a lot out of me due to the race followed by her death in August. So, this year I’m just running enjoying my wife and kids and thinking about good the times. At some point I will run a race again but for now I’ll chill. Thanks for the encouragement, Seth. Grieving sucks!!

So happy everyone struggles with these things, I often feel like I am doing things wrong because some times it feels I can run a marathon and some times I just have to stop and take walks in between because I don't feel good.

It's your journey! I took 22 years off from running marathons (age 38-60) because of life. I was still running, just not racing marathons. Since 60 I have run 15 marathons (more than I did prior to my long sabbatical) and just turned 70 and have 5 more on the books this year alone. I am not suggesting to anyone that they should do what I did, only that it really is never too late as long as you maintain your health and have the determination and desire. Embrace your time with your kids and wife, you don't get do overs on that. You have plenty of time and no one to answer to other than yourself.

QOD: The year after I PR’d my marathon in Victoria BC about two years ago I did a personal check in for racing and training. I loved the structure I had for that time, but the cost was taken from my personal life and personal relationships. I’ve since taken the summers off racing, and spend that time instead with those close to me be it friends for family. Plus I do a lot more hiking in that season and doing things that bring joy to my life.
