"Depart cold! Son of a cold, thou who break us the bones, destroy us the skull, make ill the seven openings of the head! Go out on the floor! Stink stink stink!" Thank you ancient Egypt for my next remedy.

Thank you! Has been decades since i read this volume. When i finished high school i took a gap year and decided to implement my own curriculum -- with history one of 8 selected courses. Durant was my guide -- his writing so accessible yet profound, his tone so personable yet erudite, his personality so present, warm, friendly, genuine, and masterful. Have loved him, as my father loved him, ever since that wonder year, 1987.

Egypt with the rest of Africa - first in most human activities, if not all and more, since the fossil record suggests all men come from there. The Durants - unbiased and, like Herodotus, truths seeking and info bearing. So much to be told, so much to know. Thank you!

He mentions the Sothic Cycle at 1:44:00 - 1:47:00. Basically the Egyptian calendar was based on 1460 year cycles derived from the rising of the star Sirius, and when this book was written it wasn't clear which events happened during which cycle, so some dates were miscalculated by centuries.

If this chapter on Egypt and so for others takes more than 3 hours of listening, and if i dedicate 30 minutes to listen a day, and with the book in hand for underlying at important points - it will take me a week to assimilate. In my humble submission, both Will and Ariel are god sent Gods, who have helped us understand our history. ON my side technology has also helped me, i play the audio at a lesser speed (0.75x) so to keep pace with my brain speed which is occupied with many earthly things. I will take time to read the entire First volume on Oriental Heritage. What is amazing is how could the Durants dedicate their life writing 11 volumes, which is a distilled wisdom, their brains must have been preserved for posterity like that of Einestein. In my humble indian way my pranaams and namaskaarams to Will and Ariel.

Egyptians were not Born yellow and then darkened by the Sun. This may be the case for so called modern Egyptians. But the real Egyptians who built the ancient civilization described their origins, and that was from inner Africa near where the blue and white Nile meets. See a map

It sounds good but it is just seems like it is rehashed from other works. There is hardly any individual or new interpretation. Very little in depth analysis. I found it rather mundane and insufficient to hold the interest of a keen student, deeply interested researcher or serious scholar. It may have been considered good at one time but our knowledge and understanding has increased and broadened since it was written. Overall disappointing.
