Any other birders out there?! I grew up watching the Baltimore Orioles. Does that count?

I started shooting sports for local high school teams and love it. I have started going to a local wetlands preserve and found a love for shooting wildlife as well. Shooting both genres has mad me better at both absolutely! I started in entry level gear and have upgrading gear as my love for photography grows. My advice is to keep shooting! Love the channel!

Fabulous discussion today guys. Not sure I'm cut out for waiting 2 hours in a blind for a duck to come by, but Cameron's photos are stunning. I'm more the type to wait in the baseball dugout and wait for a running to come to first base. :-)

I am not a birder but I love taking my telephoto lens to national parks to capture other animals, especially bears in the Tetons! When you're in the parks you see a lot of pros out with their 400 2.8 and it can be intimidating to the amateurs, but I've gotten some amazing shots on my 150-600 which has served me well in wildlife and sports photography. I got mine on ebay for $650!

My two photography interests are sports and wildlife so this video was very enjoyable to me. I think another similarity is the ability to track fast moving subjects. I think there is probably a lot of similarity in Cameron tracking a bird in flight and you locking on to Bogaerts when he is stealing second.

A really interesting video Billie. I am mainly a Wildlife Photographer but have been watching your channel as I have had a go at photographing American Football on various occasions before the Covid outbreak at our local University in the U.K. As discussed in your video, there are a lot of similarities with both genres and when I first started watching your channel, I understood practically all of the techniques and and tips you were giving due to me photographing wildlife. Hopefully when the new season starts things will be much nearer to normal.

Interesting observations for sure, Gary! Cool to hear you are mainly a wildlife shooter. It seems like a fun way to get out and shoot. An dyes, here's hoping 2021 looks a little more normal!

@Billie Weiss let's hope so Billy. I'm going stir crazy not being able to travel in the car to my favourite location to photograph Short Eared Owls. Also the local University play their American football in January, Feb and March. Hopefully they'll play it later in the year than usual so I can go and photograph them playing.

Cool video, I’m a photojournalist and shoot breaking news and sports as a newspaper photographer. However wildlife and wildlife photography has also been an almost lifelong passion for me. I started around 9 years old as well with wildlife photography and I still do it 25 years later. Just not as often as I would like to. It is certainly hard to pay the bills with wildlife photography, I’ve won a few awards that were cash prizes, but day to day it’s tough. Both sports and wildlife photography have so much in common and it’s very easy for me to switch between the two. However Cameron was correct, you need to have knowledge on your subjects and habitats, etc. There are even laws and regulations that you need to know, for instance not picking up Eagle or Hawk feathers as it’s federally illegal. There are so many other examples, but one thing that really helped me out, was talking to Fish and Wildlife Officers. They have such a vast knowledge and are usually more than happy to share that knowledge with you. So I visit my local law enforcement officers with Fish and Wildlife about twice a year. I make an appointment and they give me access to areas that are off limits for the public. Now I’m lucky to have press credentials from my newspapers that I work for. However before I had those, they still were very friendly and gave me the same access because I kindly asked ahead of time. Same with sports, you can always call your local MILB farm team or college and ask if you photograph a game. When I was starting out I would call around and you’d be surprised how often people said yes. There are so many cool people in both genres and if you ask and you show passion, usually someone will give you a shot. Just be very polite and kind as you’ll go far. Sports has really changed with Covid-19 so it’s almost impossible to get access to professional sports venues. Also High School sports have pretty much been non existent and or on hold. So it’s incredibly difficult to get access to any sporting events at the moment. Maybe it’s a great time for sports photographer’s to pick up wildlife photography lol. The skills and equipment translate so well, as discussed in the video. I’ve definitely been fortunate to keep my job during this pandemic, and I know sports will return to normal eventually. So in the meantime I’m doing mostly breaking news and even portrait work to make up for sports. You really have to adapt in tough times and do whatever you can to put that food on the table. Let’s all hope and pray things start to get better for all photographer’s in 2021! Thanks for the video, I loved seeing the title and getting the notification about this one. Another great idea and cool video Billy, thanks!

Great video, I think it is a great comparison between the two disciplines in photography. Lots of uncontrolled action in each type of photography. I am a big fan of shooting sports and wildlife for sure. I like the idea of having people from different photography backgrounds on the channel, I think you can always learn and take away something from other types of photography.
