Wildlife Photography - WOLVES and BEARS part 1 | The travel to Finland

I am going to Finland to photograph the wild wolves and bears, and to be able to see these fascinating animals in their natural environment. Beside photographing it is my goal to vlog from this trip to share my fascination of these beautiful mammals. These animals are extremely shy and to get close to them, I am going to a location, where they have set up photo hides and have put out meat for the bears for many years.
This is where I am: www.wildfinland.org/
I am going with my good friend Simon and in this first episode we are travelling to the location and are getting ready for the first day in the hide. So not a lot of wildlife photography in this one, but I promise you, the next one will be full of that!

••• WHO I AM •••
My name is Morten Hilmer and I am a professional nature and wildlife photographer. In this series of behind the scenes vlogs I want to share my fascination of nature with you and invite you behind the scene when I am out photographing the fascinating wildlife, the stunning landscapes and the wild nature. I work as a ILCP photographer, and nature conservation is very close to my heart.
For me nature photography is all about sharing the unique experiences and to put awareness to nature conservation. Furthermore my goal is to inspire as many as possible to get out and experience the true beauty of nature.
“I have served in the Danish military special unit, the Sirius Patrol, for two years and that has given me the skills and confidence to operate alone in the arctic regions. I have spent two further years in the northern parts of Greenland meeting the local people and working on photography projects. My driving force is a sense of adventure and my fascination for nature, and my curiosity and empathy for other cultures has led me to many remote regions.”
Read more about my time in the Sirius Dogsled Patrol: www.bbc.com/earth/story/201602...
Beside the many publications my photographs has been awarded in the Wildlife photographer of the year and European Wildlife photographer of the year photo competitions.
In spring 2017 I published my book Silence of the North: shop.mortenhilmer.com/product...

Hi everyone :) It has been such an awesome trip to Finland and I am now sitting here back home on the farm with way too much footage! Sorry for making you wait so long for this first episode - and then it is not even full of wildlife photography... The next one will be... I promise:) I have put a link to the location in the description, if you want to go there yourself. Well I better get back to editing - part 2 is in the process :) See you out there !

That' one mighty drone, I'm intrigued how the video was captured during the driving scenes and when you were both swimming, drone footage really does add to the overall production, it makes the finished video more complete and we really do get to share in the journey and sense of the miles covered. Can't wait for the next installment. thanks again Morten.

I suffered with severe social anxiety and depression, and did not leave my house for 2 years. In this time I discovered photography and in time I started to visit remote places without any people. Wildlife and landscape photography changed my life and gave me a reason to leave the house (without being in crowded areas). My inspiration to get out and take pictures of wildlife comes from 2 years with that illness and being in nature reminds me of my freedom from who I was. I owe my life to nature, wildlife and photography. Thank you Morten, it was a joy to write this comment and really made me think about something I hadn't given attention to before. Congratulations in reching 50,000 subs.

What gives me inspiration to do photography is when you are going about your daily life and you come across a moment where the light is JUST right, it falls perfectly over whatever you're looking at, you "see" the photo before you take it, then you take it home and upload it to see it in all it's glory, then the wonderful joy of sharing it with others and having them blown away by it, there aren't many things more inspiring to keep shooting!

Well, apart from the enormous inspiration I get by watching your videos, there are others too. We live in a beautiful world where the lands are varied and the species extremely different, no matter where you go. Just driving to work, or walking my dog gets me out and what I see on my little journeys amaze me, and I think to myself "I want to learn about that and photograph it", to hopefully share with others and to hopefully bring the general public out of their everyday bubble and take a second look at nature themselves. Its the little things in life, such as a kestrel hunting and being able to see Voles urine via Ultraviolet light. Generally peope know nothing about that for example and are amazed when I tell them. And knowledge can be wonderful to in-turn, inspire others to take an interest. To see people interested also inspires me to "educate" more. As I see it, the more people who enjoy nature, makes nature itself very much safer with like-minded people on its side. Apart from just being in nature and seeing something amazing, no matter it be a large bird or tiniest insect, inspires me to want to photograph it. Looking at other wildlife photographers images also inspires me, as well as watching the great David Attenborough productions. Having a lifelong passion for nature and wildlife inspires me to take better pictures, as we only have one planet, and if we lose a species that is tragic, and I think we can maybe help prevent that from happening by showing what beauty we have that people just do not see. We need nature...nature does not need us, and if that can prevent just one species from becoming extinct and prospering, then that is inspiration enough for me. :-)

In the wildlife, I get inspired by the animals themselves, the beauty of them, by their innocence. When I am in the wild watching a deer, or a fox , a wild boar, they make me feel alive, I feel their way of enjoying life. When I look through the viewfinder to a deer I can feel how I can catch her beauty, the power of a wild boar, the trickery of a fox, the grace of a wild cat. Nothing made by human does not give me more inspiration more than the wilderness itself. They are like models for fashion photographers for me.

I find inspiration from the wild animals and how they live their lives. I want to capture pictures from their lives and learn more about them. What motivates me is that I can see how I improve from each and every picture I take. The satisfaction when you can see your improvements and getting the shots you've always wanted, keeps me going. Thankn you Morten for being a great inspiration to many people and for giving others a chance to win this awesome bag!

In love for wild animals. It started when I was a child, I liked wildlife documentaries to watch, I could watch it all day. When I got my first camera I realized that I´m shooting only bugs, birds, plants... Now I´m searching for my inspiration in national parks, mountains, rivers, lakes, swamps, and forests. When I´m searching for a specific species then I already know where to find it, and sometimes I look at the google maps for interesting national parks or forest which could be potential then I´m slowly and quietly hiking.

As an over the road truck driver, I gaze thru a lens every day, the lens of my windshield, with so many panoramas before me, just an everyday guy behind the wheel, yet so much of what I see, is anything but everyday. Sunrises, sunsets....like a snowflake, no one is ever the same. To catch that magic, capture that memory, to a degree is its own reward. But the real satisfaction, the driving why, of why do i take these photographs? Is it for the chance for fame? For praise or admiration? For social media likes? I've concluded it is none of these, but rather, the opportunity to share with others, who may not ever have the chance to be in those times or places, the wonder and beauty I see of what God has created and given us to enjoy. My simple hope is always to capture the essence of a moment, whether from a 2 mile hike to a hidden waterfall, the quick, curious popping up of a prairie dog, the amazing majesty of a snowcapped mountain, the fleeting glimpse of loons in a mist, the character etched in the face of an elderly native american, the pure joy of a child chasing bubbles, or a lightning flash in the desert. So many know only their world, yet my work allows me to travel among many, and my passion for photography, gives me the privilege to share the moments and the beauty that I see. and maybe, just maybe, something in my sharing, will spark others to realize and capture the extraordinary in their everydays.

My inspiration comes from nature itself. Anytime I leave the desk and step into the outdoor I'm motivated to spend more time out in it. As a lifelong weather and hunting enthusiast I grew up chasing storms and hunting big game animals. As I've aged, my desire to get in the fray, be it storms or the hunt, has lessened and now I'd rather observe nature from afar which allows for spectacular photography opportunities. Shooting pictures of storms form a 1 or 50 kilometers away provide such subtle beauty. Conversely, working to get within meters of a deer, elk or other big game, but then allowing it to walk on by and having the images to always remember the encounter is priceless.

I started taking photograph of birds when i was at the age of eleven. I would use the point-and-shoot camera that my father bought for me to take pictures of birds that built their nest on the roof of our house. My passion grows as i was able to capture the amazing and precious moments when the chicks were being fed and taken care of. It was then i knew i should explore other places too and i decided to learn and read up on birds. My parents also bought for me a Nikon DSLR to support my hobby. As i watch youtube videos and images on social media of nature and wildlife photographers, I'm in awe of the effort and patients that they put in, in order to get an amazing picture. The sense of satisfaction when i capture the moment that i want cannot be put into words. Wildlife and bird photography is and will be my passion for life.

My inspiration comes from knowing that there are millions of untold stories waiting to be told by photo or video. The thought of capturing them and sharing them with people across the globe is something that was unimaginable a hundred years ago. This kind of storytelling, what ever type of photography that may be, doesn't matter if its a big team or a 1 man crew, inspires me to create.

A few years ago I was attracted to the bird pictures I found on the internet. In my search I discovered so many new things about photographing birds about equipment, technique, bird behaviour and so on. The more I found out the more I wanted to discover by reading books, listening for hours to bird sounds (and then forgetting them and start all over again), joining photo competitions and being out in nature to discover birds in their habitat. Then one day my companion in a bird hide told me about this guy called Morten Hilmer or something like that. Back home I searched the youtube channel and since that day I became a follower. So my biggest inspiration comes from other wildlife photographers like yourself. No complicated theory but in your face all day reality examples in a simple understandable way for the novice as well as the pro. It's a pleasure to follow someone so dedicated who wants to share his knowledge and adventures with others. Your enthousiasm works contagius and makes one to go out as much as possible to discover what nature has to offer. A big thank you for that.

I started photography in high school in 1964 where I discovered the works of Ansel Adams. Photography became my passion and became a photographer in the Navy. The way I see light and compositions is what inspires me the most. I love wildlife and nature so being able to capture those moments in time is a dream come true. Beauty is inspirational and the camera brings that inspiration to life. I just wish I wasn't limited by my age and my body.

I simply find my inspiration by taking a moment and looking around at the world given to me. Whether I am at home on the farm, or at university, or somewhere else, just taking a moment to absorb it all in. I love just sitting down with a pair of binoculars and looking at the wildlife from a distance and saying "I need to capture this." The same goes for all my photos. Just looking at the beauty given to me by the world thinking that same statement, I need to capture this. Even in the rain, during the night, there is always something to capture.

Althought I have a full time job,I spend every free minute photographing landscapes and animals. Started a few months ago,but I love it more day after day. It just brings happiness and peace to my soul. Not many people can understand that, but I think you can because I see the way how you talk to the people through video, really inspires me, it's so honest and true talk. I tried many things in my life, literally, and I discovered my passion, for example it's not hard for me to get up at 3am, have a breakfast and tea and go to the nature and wait for that first pinch of light and enjoy the time spending there, even tho if I dont catch an animal through my lens, I'm still glad I got up and enjoyed every second of that morning, sounds, smells, perspectives.

My only goal with wildlife photography is to convey the way I feel when I encounter wild animals in their natural habitat, and hope it stirs within others a love for nature that might lead them to their own encounters. I hope that, through this, people take it upon themselves to conserve and protect our natural wonders. After all, people won’t protect what they don’t know is there. The inspiration I have to deepen myself into photography is created by the collection of beautiful examples that nature is showing me every single day. From the smallest insect to the biggest elephant, everything I see on the internet or with my own eyes tells me every time again that we should just enjoy (and feel lucky for) every single chance we receive to observe this natural beauty. I am living in Belgium and it is not that easy to spot rare animals to create astonishing images, so I really have to focus on the wildlife that the people here see every day. This pushes me every day to get more creative with my photographs because everyone already knows how for example a simple magpie looks. All of this inspires me to get even better and to explore even more with my camera.

I get my inspiration from several places. One is watching various KZread channels on wildlife and landscape photography. Another is Nature itself. I am retired and travel in my RV, which is my home since I sold everything else. I travel with the sole purpose of experiencing life through the lens. Seeing wildlife and being in a spot where i know not another human being is seeing what i see and capture at that exact moment is awe inspiring.

Since I incursionated in the world of photography it has given me the chance to scape from our busy and fast world. It allows me to connect better with what surrounds me. As a biologist and a environmental science student, I've been thought to see the unseen, to explore and go a little bit further. But what is most important to see our reality from different perspectives. That is what has driven me to photograph nature. Nature has so many shapes, colors and sizes and everywhere you go nature has something new to show you. I get inspired by just walking in the nature, sit down for a few minutes and start observing what is surrounding me. After a while, i feel that nature slowly starts revealing me its deepest secrets and there is where I take my camera and capture that moment. As humans we tend to overlook our surroundings and therefore part of our reality. Photography has taught me to pay attention to the small details and enjoy what live is giving me.

I find my inspiration from my childhood with my father. We always used to watch nature documentaries and it was only after he died that I started to fully experience nature through photography. It makes me sad that he wasn’t there to experience it with me, but I’m glad I got to do it either way. I think he would be proud.

For street photography I walk, and walk, and walk, always listening to music and looking around. Then sometimes feels like I need to get shots pushed by the music. In several occasions I contacted the artists I was listening to, so they could see the pictures they inspired. And it was like closing a circle, it was great. For wildlife, I watch one of your videos, remember how happy I was as a child seeing any kind of free, wild animal, and go out to the forests around Stockholm and try my best. You are a big inspiration for me to chase that feeling, not just "getting the shots". Thank you so much for that, Morten.

My inspiration is just how beautiful nature is. I love the sights, sounds and smells of it. I love just being out there and soaking it all in, oh and a thermos of coffee just tops it off. What I am enjoying most of all at the moment is being able to share it with my son who also shares my passion for nature and photography.

I think living in NYC everything is inspiring. I never really get the chance to be able to go into the wild and photograph amazin animals in their natural habitat. But as I walk thru the streets of NYC I consider the wild life to be part of my everyday experience to survive life in NYC. I love photographing people in their natural state when their all alone within their thoughts and self being. I love watchin your video because I tent to mimic your science of being patience when it comes to taking your shots. No matter whether I win this bag or not your love for photography and being 1 with your craft is what I always look forward too when watchin your video. So thank you for all that you do!

Apart from youtube and browsing photos of a lot of different people, my main source of inspiration comes at the exact moment when I actually get to see an animal after having been waiting or walking around the forest for hours. Only those few minutes (or seconds) are so much worth it and fill me up with energy to keep going! :)

Hi Morten I started photographing wildlife about 4 years ago with an entry level canon DSLR. I am in my 50’s and was not very fit. Wildlife photography has inspired me to get out and about in my natural bush in Queensland Australia and enjoy my surroundings and the animals who inhabit it. It has amazed me when I am hiking for many kilometres with my photography equipment how much I enjoy the exercise and serenity. I have lost weight and now hike nearly every weekend. When I travel I always plan where I can take wildlife in their natural surroundings. I am a passionate advocate for wildlife and the sustainability of the environment. By photographing these wonderful creatures (even if you are not a professional) and sharing them will inspire some else and raise awareness of the beauty and importance of these creatures. Thank you so much for your great videos and sharing your photos which has inspired me and many others.

What got me inspired was a friend who does wildlife photography and I would look as his pictures and be amazed. What got me hooked on wildlife photography was 3 years ago. There was reports of a few bald eagles near a lake ( never seen one in person ) close by to where I live. When I was driving down I got a phone call and my buddy said I need to hurry and get down there. When I arrived there was about 20 or so bald eagles in the trees, fishing, and just flying overhead. I was in complete awe. That was the moment I told my self I wanna do this full time being out in nature and the peace that came with it and seeing animals in there natural habitat and the thrill of getting that shot.

Hello Morten, My name is Mauricio Vargas and I am Mexican. I currently reside in Boston, where I do my master's degree in finance. My biggest hobby is photography, which began 7 years ago with a class I took in high school, where my passion for photography was born. There is nothing I like about Boston more than its climate diversity both in summer and winter, where with a good jacket and a cup of coffee, nothing stops me from going out to take my favorite photographs and keep improving. I am not the best photographer and I do not have the best equipment, however my Canon T6s has never disappointed me. Your channel has helped me a lot and above all inspired to continue making this beautiful art regardless of the weather conditions. Thank you very much and keep it up!

The atmosphere really makes me feel at peace and inspires me to stay and capture the moment. When it comes to wildlife photography I have gotten really inspired by your passion and respect for the wildlife and it has lead to me going up early in the morning to the woods in hope of catching a glimpse of a fox or a deer (which I've had fantastic experiences with)
