FOXES & DEER - WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHY | Behind the scenes with wildlife photographer Morten Hilmer

Ойын-сауық

Wildlife Photographer Morten Hilmer takes you behind the scenes when he is looking for the Wildlife in the Danish woodlands.
This short documentary is about Wildlife photography and the great experiences nature gives. The video takes you behind the scenes and shows how a nature photographer works.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
••• ABOUT THIS EPISODE •••
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wildlife photography - Foxes & Deer | Behind the scenes is all about how to get close to the animals and how nature can always surprise you when you are being quiet and humble.
It's early morning and I am in the field with my camera to discover the wildlife. I am especially looking for the deer. This day the I got the best experience ever on this location...
Light is perfect for wildlife photography and everything seems to be a perfect photo trip. Nature did not know anything about my plan for the day, so a surprise was waiting for me out there!
It is my intention to make behind the scenes videos from my upcoming photo adventures, and in the winter I am planning on making a video from my photo expedition to Svalbard.
So please subscribe to my channel if you want to get notified when I upload a new video about nature and wildlife photography.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
••• WHO I AM •••
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My name is Morten Hilmer and I work as a professional nature and wildlife photographer. In a serie of short 4K videos I will share my fascination of nature with you and invite you behind the scene when I am out photographing the fascinating wildlife, the stunning landscapes and the wild nature. I work as a ILCP photographer, and nature conservation is very close to my heart.
“I have served in the Danish military special unit, the Sirius Patrol, for two years and that has given me the skills and confidence to operate alone in the arctic regions. I have spent two further years in the northern parts of Greenland meeting the local people and working on photography projects. My driving force is a sense of adventure and my fascination for nature, and my curiosity and empathy for other cultures has led me to many remote regions.”
Read more about my time in the Sirius Dogsled Patrol: www.bbc.com/earth/story/201602...
Beside the many publications my photographs has been awarded in the Wildlife photographer of the year and European Wildlife photographer of the year photo competitions.
In spring 2017 I published my book Silence of the North: mortenhilmer.com/en/shop/sile...

It's great to see how someone who puts effort into making his passion / love a real thing makes him happy instead of someone buying something to pretend happiness, he went out there and took the cool photos resulting in cool feeling.

I'm just sitting here with a smile watching your adventure. Thanks for sharing it. I know it's not about the gear, but I hear that the Sony A9 lets you take pictures in complete silence. It sounds like quite an advantage in the wild. Have you never considered that? Enough taking about gear. I will find my 18-250 and go enjoy the nature and if I'm lucky get a memory on the card. You make me proud to be danish Morten!

Love your videos Morten. Really like the way you convey the atmosphere of stalking wildlife and your emotion when you get something you love - I was on the edge of my seat whilst watching. In your Facebook post you mention how you like further suggestions, etc.... well, my suggestion is this - I would post a video like this once a week, or so. They should be just like this once, so it doesn't have to be a super polished, hyper edited video - it just needs to show what it's REALLY like to be out there, photographing the life of wild animals. And I would say that this video does it perfectly. A key element is you, your emotion and your commentary - the more of YOU you put into the video, the better. When I watched this video, I really felt what it was like to be out there with you, and you bring your wildlife and your personalty to my living room. And I think it's great and will become essential viewing for other like minded people.

I chose this video to share on social media for your 50K subscribers promotion - It is my favorite example from your channel of the wonders of exploring, finding unique moments and appreciating the beauty of nature in all its forms. I'm also a fan of the style you use of slowing down and taking in each moment in an age of fast cuts and "no more than 90 seconds of video" - This shows us how a longer video that takes it's time can be far more effective and enjoyable than quick clips.

Sometimes you can use the noise of your shutter to your advantage. If a Fox or Deer is crossing open ground, one click can make it stop and look up giving you time to take a better picture. I use my camera on silent mode and click my finger to get their attention, then I can often take a number of pictures without alarming them and they usually move on without even knowing I was there.

I really appreciate your deliberately slow pacing with your editing - specifically the fox sequence - many people would have cut that up and edited the sequence down a lot, but the one long take (how many minutes was it?) was enthralling and really captured the emotion and atmosphere perfectly. What can I say but WOW...what an excellent video. I was so impressed I had to sub you, and cannot wait for more of your vids and to watch your other videos. Definitly one of the very best wildlife photography videos I have seen on KZread by far. As an avid wildlife photographer/outdoorsman myself, I could really convey the passion and the love of wildlife and nature that you have.......and that passion certainly shows in the videos. Your excitement and being lost for words when that Fox appeared reminded me of myself. Respect to you my friend! Love the forest you have, and I have the same camouflage suit also. Beautiful country you live in. I have a forest next to me, and I love to go shooting (with the camera) my local Muntjac deer. I tend to set up a small hide and await for them to show themselves, if they do that is. As you know, if they smell, hear or see you...they are off like a shot. But when you get a shot, then it makes it so much more rewarding. Love your Fox image, and your fallow images too. Always nice to get them acting natural as can be. Anyways, I have rambled on too much. But your video was a fantastic watch, loved it. You also have a great knack for the commentary too.....keep them coming please! ATB :-)

Hi and thanks a ton for your great comment. What a NICE compliment. I really appreciate it:) So where do you live? Actually I also use the little blind every now and then. Very effective - especially if I set it up some days before I have to use it. I am just getting my gear together - going to Switzerland for a little more than a week and I really hope I can get the chance to make a video from down there. What are you working on these days? The Muntjac deer? All the best Morten

Don't you have a silent mode to avoid the shutter noise ? (like the GH4 has) And a dumb question, why not using the GH4 for animal photography as well ? Problem of lens, sensor, ... ? Thanks for this amazing video, loved it !

Thank you so much for writing. That is a really good question. The small sensor on the GH4 is not so good for the low light siturations but a full frame mirrorless would probably be awesome. I am going to test it out in the future:)

just take your camera, dress up in dark colours (most animals see in black and white but wearing darks colours helps with blending with bushes etc) and go outside to take photos - it takes a lot of time and patience so be ready for long hours of nothing happening ;) you can buy masking net to help you with hiding and it is way cheaper then special clothes that Morten wears (of course it is not as comfortable, but for beginning it is very good option) ;)

Hi Morten. I live in England & went to a place called Richmond Park on the outskirts of London which is a renowned place to take photos of deer, but it felt like cheating because they are really used to humans being around so they gave you more time to get the shot. I came home & although loved the shots I’d been able to get, didn’t appreciate it as much as when you have to go out & use your stalking abilities to get the shot. I can see why you appreciated the fox shot so much, but would you have appreciated it as much if you had taken the same shot in a zoo or wildlife park or any other controlled environment?..Have just subscribed so keep posting videos like this. Mark.

Thank you so much mark for sharing your thoughts. Yes I totally agree with you. There is just something wrong when Nature and Controlled is said in the same sentence:) We also have Dyreparken - a controlled area in Denmark, were you can get very close to the deer and most great photos of red deer in Denmark are made there. You know these brilliant shots with a red deer bellowing in the sunset surrounded by fog:) I much prefer just being in the wild forest even though I rarely get such great photos. But then again. It is all about having a good time in nature - not about how challenging it is to get the photo. For me to be honest, it is not so much about the final photograph. More about the nice feeling of being surrounded by nature and the unique experienced I get out there. So maybe we could say that one does not exclude the other. Going to Richmond Park can still give an awesome experience and also works as a good place to practice. I often need to practice myself so I dont miss when it really matters. Once again I really appreciate you sharing your thoughts. All the best from Denmark:)
