A “rule” I broke for myself recently was using my 150-600 lens for a landscape shot at full magnification. The compression I got with it was absolutely mind boggling and I made a mountain that was 30 miles away from my subject, a much smaller mountain which was 10 miles from me, look like it was right on top of it. I could not believe it when I saw the image in post!

I've countered the "rules" in my head with this one "if in doubt just take the shot". This goes for shutter, iso etc. It's surprising how often it works out.

I use a GFX50S ii...I get down to 1/3 ...IBIS is a game changer 🙌 Put IBIS into continuous My rule I broke was shooting landscapes with zooms Also the way we hold a camera is critical Elbows tucked and back screen against your chest you then have a stable base! Another tip ..use 2 second delay so shutter release doesn't move the camera. Thanks for your video.

It's always a pleasure to watch your channel, Henry. And braving conditions I'd regard as hostile to pose a thought-provoking question. By nature, I'm a fiddler and will always try to push forward with my camera use. I have found (OM-1) that with a little bracing (leaning against a pole), I can get sharp images from my 400mm lens at astonishingly low shutter speeds like 1/30th sec. I also tried high-res mode on a waterfall and got some nice water movement without the need for ND filters.

Funny for me it was always the opposite. I kept scratching my head why you (and some of your fellow YTbers) were so persistent in using a tripod. No bloody need, especially not when both lens and camera are stabilised Glad you figured it out, saves you some weight on your hikes... 😉

I suspect the 24-200 VR lens is helping the Z7 out quite a bit. Good to see you using it as it does not get the love it deserves. Crappy rain, but sitting in hot Phoenix, some cool raid would be uber welcome. :)

You are correct. I have gotten ‘lucky’ with quite a few slow shutter speeds with my Z7 and 24-200. It’s a decent combo, and You're right about that lens not getting much ‘Love.’

Great to see you in Lakeland again, stunning scenery.

So lovely to see the quiet places in the fells Henry, makes me realise how much I miss them! And the clouds just added to the mood, really wonderful! As for breaking the rules, well using a 150-600mm lens for landscapes was a breakthrough for me, just as others have said. Now I really enjoy what I can do with those longer focal lengths, getting the shots that you'd never think of with a wideangle.

Both the 24-200 and the Z7 having VR/IBIS is doing the work. Pair that with say a 100-400S as well and you'd seen even crazier results. The new combo of stability tools can combine so strongly in these new cameras. I shoot with the Z7II and the Zf and with many of the lenses, it is mindblowing from my old D810 and no stabilized early "trinity lenses" (14-24/2.8, 24-70/2.8 no VR, 80-200/2.8D no VR). The combo of the 100-400s and the Z7II and Zf is something like 6-8 stops of VR stabilisation. Edit: I'll add too, the clean higher ISOs of the new cameras is amazing too. I can shoot up to 6400 on the Zf and still be happy, allowing me to get more exposure in other ways, and up to say 3200 on my Z7II more exposure elsewhere too.

What's also useful is the use the OM System High-Res Shot mode. With your OM-5, you can use the handheld high res shot mode and leverage its 7 stop image stabilization. So, for example, take a HHHR shot at 1/2 second shutter speed and it will actually take 8 shots and blend them. Now you have a 4 second exposure at 50 megapixels handheld. Can your Nikon do that? AND your OM-5 will be completely unaffected by the rain shown throughout this video.

I can imagine that the Z7 and also your lens both have good image stabilization. That would definitely help a lot. I know I won't manage those shutter speeds with my D7100 and 17-55 lens without VR or also not with the 55-300, which has VR.

Hi Henry, another grand day out even if it was claggy at the end there. Thanks for sharing ... 1/6 of a second .. massively helped out by IBIS and VR I'd expect, but in no small way influenced by simply becoming practised in taking hand held shots ... and the confidence to try it. Re the Z7, maybe its now Z 007 ! ... but to be fair the Z7 was never shabby. Re the bad weather ... black bin bags for the kit and a 10p shower cap for the camera! .. and if the weather gets proper filthy, get inside a black bin bag!

Cracking images obtained with your usual enthusiasm in what, for many people, would be terrible conditions. Great to see that you haven't forgotten about the eternal quest to complete AWs great big list of fells too. The hand-held images are fascinating, given that are taken at such a slow shutter speed. The larger part of the ground is sharp and the moving water is a blur, so it makes you wonder about actually how the algorithm works within the camera and how it works out what to keep sharp and what to blur... I've love to see a photograhy vlogger go out into the field with one of the camera designers so that can you can both go through the technology of image stabilization and how it works on various parts of the image

Never too late for knowing your camera 🙂 I always wondered why you said that you can't take photos with speed less than 1/30. I have the exact same setup (Z7 + 24-200mm) and I can shoot around 1/6 and even 1/3.

Hey there, just found your channel and love the presentation: educational and yet entertaining, especially the shots of the sheep. By the way, if I had to venture a tuna and sweet corn sandwich bet, my guess would be that the sheep who almost impaled itself trying to get away from you was sick. When I was out filming at a National Museum two years ago that managed a lot of barn animals, the barn manager said that the sheep they take care of there are an odd bunch: Sheep are great until they get sick, whereby, being prey animals, they think that they therefore have to die, which makes them panic at the slightest provocation. Notice how all the other sheep were just mostly curious? Poor thing thought it was done for and that you were coming to take it away on that proverbial chariot ride.

The Image Stabilisation in the Z7 is fantastic. Add the VR of the lens and you could probably go slower than a 1/6th of a second.

Hi Henry, great video as always. I regularly take shape photos with my Z50 which only has lenz stabilisation at 1/5 of a second. That's because I hate tripods.

We create so many boundaries on our creativity and makes us afraid to try something. Great job at 1/6 SS.

I've shot to 1/10th handheld with my Z7 and 24-70, and my hands are not particularly steady, the stabilization is amazing.

The 24 - 200 mm is a great lens. Image stabilisation on my Z6 is great especially for photography.

Glad you have your Z7 back, they are so good, for me it is the camera I am most comfortable with. OMs are very good but that menu 😩. Lovely images as always.

I think Mr Wainwright would have appreciated a bit of rule-breaking and generally 'going your own way'! Not sure what he would have made of live streaming off the top a hill, mind you. 😀 Great video.

I have to say I have been surprised at how you compared the IBIS in the Nikon and the Olympus, as I almost always have used my Z6ii handheld (did the same with my D750), and _almost_ always get away with it, so good that you finally realised how good the Z7 is handheld :). Great to see you have your Z7 back Henry, I often thought before that you don't need to use your tripod as much as you have been, I usually don't want to use mine when I'm out with my Z7, so far I have not tried how slow I can go on the shutter speed hand held , that would be interesting if you were to try that.

Hi Henry. It's all about arms in, be comfortable with your breathing , best is on end of outward breath. And if you can lean against something. I shoot Sony with 6 axis stabilizer and often get down to 1/3

Great Location love the Lake District been there but no photos. I have a go to location 10 mins from home Hawksbury Lookout in the Blue Mountains Australia overlooking Sydney about 50 miles away for Sunrise. I go at least once a week if the sky'/weather is right every day, I set the tripod up and go for it, low light, fog mist all things long exposure. Recent months just prior to getting to getting in car to come home I've hand held a few parting shots which has gone against my normal practice, got some amazing shots, I know what you experienced.

More of a Pentax K200d and Kr user and have some amazing old school 42mm lenses to play with plus the Pentax water proofed ones .Personally i take a 1960's Bolex Paillard monopod out with me as it doubles as a hiking stick when traversing slippery ground .Fitted a length of cycle handlebar foam over the top section so it's warm and a better grip . Allows for even more stable slow speed shots than hand holding . It's when you zoom in and try cropping that the blurr can become evident . Not so much a " rule " more of a " thing " back in the day before image stabailastion was invented .

Here's a tip for anyone who has an aversion to use a tripod; Get down on one knee, and hold your camera on top of the other knee.

Henry, I used to apply a similar rule when I used to shoot film many moons ago, but with digital I figured it didn’t cost anything to try handhelds at slower speeds if I didn’t have a tripod , but would shoot multiple images to increase the probability of a sharp keeper. As image stabilizing has got better the chances of success increase and I am tempted to use even slower handheld speeds, again multiple images. Worst case I delete a bunch of unsharp images, but the occasional success makes it worth it.

Went up Nether Beck on Easter Monday, turned up to Scoat Tarn rather than the tops - nobody around even though it was the bank holiday. I saw the notification for the live stream that didn't succeed, and would have enjoyed seeing you up there. Great that the longer exposures are working without the need for the tripod.

One rule I'll never break... Chacon and bicken sandwich over tuna any day 😜🥳 awesome vid again, and I'd completely forgotten how green everything is in the Lakes 🥰 I only have a nikon d5600, but I shoot handheld, because it's such a faff with the tripod 😂 I generally take a few shots of each composition, and normally manage to get at least one sharp photo. That being said, I absolutely love the way I have to slow down when I do have my tripod out, and can just find a good composition, get everything set up, and wait for the perfect moment with clouds/light/sunset colours whatever, knowing that it's going to be a lovely sharp photo ❤

In October 23, I was on holiday in Cumbria and on a very wet day we decided to walk around Loweswater as the woodland provides some cover. I took my most weather sealed combo of Olympus E-M1 ii and 12-40mm f2.8 Pro. We took the diversion to Holme Force and I took a hand-held photo aiming under the bridge where the ghyll goes under the footpath just to see what the camera could handle. On aperture priority, the shutter speed was 1.6 seconds. I was 61 at the time, so no spring chicken either. On checking this image out back home, it looks perfectly sharp to me, IBIS is fantastic 😁

Yep, been successfully shooting slow (1/4 second is as low as I can go) waterfalls handheld for a year or so on both my Z7 and full spectrum Z5 - was stunned when I did it the first time! It's almost like, why take a tripod now? (Not that I ever remember to use it despite having carried it everywhere!) Getting it zoomed to 125mm is bloody impressive! Makes you wonder how much better the Z7II or Z8 might be....

As you get older you can do slower and slower shots. When your dead you can do hand held at an hour plus😜

Thanks mate, this has inspired me to pack up the camera and get out there.... Fortunately, I'll have better weather 😃 But not quite as stunning country 😏

I've been using my Z8 handheld with slower shutter speeds. Just fire off a few to make sure you get it. The IBIS is great.

Image stabilisation on modern cameras adjusts the compensation according to the focal length. This means it is holding it steady by just the right amount depending how you zoom. If you turn that feature off and put the focal length in manually you will find the IBIS very weird in some situations.

I discovered recently that if I intentionally move very very slowly forward as I take the photo I can stand much more steady than trying to stand still. I discovered this using my sigma 105 macro because with that lens I often have to move slowly backwards and forwards to hit the focus. I've been able to go down to about 1/10 sec on my Canon 7Dii providing I'm not buffeted by wind. I hardly ever use my tripod these days unless I'm doing a long exposure.

Yep - I managed - by accident with quite a lot of misses - a photo of a Greenshank with my z 180-600 at 600mm at 1/15s!

I like to use my Sigma 150-600 for landscape shots, changes the perspective totally

Guess the view from the top is going to remain elusive on this Henry. However, you get extra points for effort. 63/214 🇦🇺

Hi Henry. It's likely that when Nikon did the repair they also upgraded the camera's firmware. This might very well include improved image stabilisation. I'd imagine there are Nikon forums where you could find out.

Given this new hand held “sensation”, you can lighten your back pack for some future trips!

I have in my head that when im using my d7200, never shoot hand held slower than the widest zoom for the lens im using…??? No idea why lol…but now ive got a z6ii, im still working it out lol…! On another note…cows freak me out when i come across any of them…!

I never use less than 1/60th for handheld but I'm still using a dslr and you can get shutter shock

I have just treated myself to a Sigma 150-600mm lens, predominantly for wildlife but was itching to grab a Moon shot. I would never normally try a Moon shot without a tripod but read that it is possible even with the 600mm. Doubting this I thought I would give it a go a few nights back. The image that I got @600mm handheld was by far the best image of the Moon I have ever achieved, pin sharp and so much detail, if there was a Chinese flag up there you would be able to see it 😂 it has completely blown my mind as to what is possible even with elderly equipment like my Nikon D3300 and 10+ year old lens technology 🤯 just goes to show, you never know until you try 😉

Yep, all those miles lugging tripods, contemplating carbon fibre vs aluminium, all the gates, tree branches you got snagged on, the wind blowing the camera over and all the time you didn’t need it. This is why Olympus shooters are so smug 😂

The z50 was not as good at this but my z7ii is stable until I'm shooting with the 200 to 500.

In my head the rule of "if you zoom X than never use a slower shutter speed of 1/X" was always stuck. But since I bought my Sony in 2021, I'll always try first. With some great success.

IS on the Z7 is 5 stops, is it not? Golden rule is 1/maximum focal length so 1/200 for the 24-200. As I understand it 5 stops brings you down to 1/6, exactly as you experienced. 😎

Yes Henry your camera was always able to do that You just had to learn how to do that Believe it or not I can go as far as 4 seconds handheld with a Pentax k-70 or with my Pentax K1 Mark II however I can do two and a half seconds at max with the Pentax k-01 and I am extremely lucky if I can get two seconds handheld with the Pentax K10D and still everything will be sharp on all cameras
