Wildlife & Landscape | Colorado with RF 100-400mm

The Canon RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM Lens is a lightweight and affordable way to break into longer telephoto shooting. Shots pictured are from Colorado in October and November, 2023. Shot both with the Canon R6 and Canon R8.

I have the 100-400 with an R5. I've used the 100-500 L. Honesty, for the price and weight the 100-400 is an awesome bargain of a lens for landscapes photographers. Its biggest downside, IMHO, is the lack of weather sealing. PRO TIP: To get the best results from this lens fire up Canon's Digital Photo Professional Software. Canon offers superior optical corrections for this lens compared to Lightroom. Do basic adjustments there and then export a master TIF and do local adjustments and final touchups in Lightroom. It is well worth the hassle for your favorite / best images.

Not sure why I've never looked at DPP before, great suggestion! I'll have to take some time to try it out soon. Lack of weather sealing is a big downer 😔

The 100-400 is amazing and I use it with an R7 with no reach regrets. 32.5 MP and a crop means 400mm is always enough and the size of the lens is so good for wilderness adventure. I think the R5 would also do it justice, but I'm looking at getting an R6II and I don't think I want to part with my R7 for wildlife... the 100-400 will just live on it. For full-frame cameras I think we really need to look at the 200-800. But I think the R7 100-400 will still beat it for hiking up a mountain.

Thanks for sharing! This makes me hype to test the combo given how light. The 200-800 is intriguing too, I like how Canon is not necessarily staying to standard offerings of the past. At the same time, I do wish there was a brighter 200-600 around the same price.

Great review! I’m 2 years into my professional photography career and still learning so much. As a canon shooter I appreciate the experimentation with these RF lenses. 📸 👍🏻

Thanks! I think my "wall" is that I'm learning a bit slower recently than I was previously? But I know the sky is still the limit... any favorites on RF so far for you?

@@DanYosua I’d say my favorite RF lens, and the one I reach for the most is my RF 85mm f 2.0, with my RF 50mm f 1.8 as a close second. I also heavily use the RF 70-200mm f 2.8 lens for work, but it’s very heavy and cumbersome.

Hey. I'm also ottawa bound. I'm a street shooter but would also like to get into landscapes. Colorado is nice but I need advice to get the most out of this region cuz I really suck at it lol. I like your edits as well so learning from you would be great. I'd also like to start making a little dough with my stuff. If I might....your videos are way too fast. I'm having a hard time processing all the information and looking at your picures. And in this instance, it would have been great to know what camera you were using. I'm considering the 100-400 as well but I have an R6. I miss my crop body (7D) crop factor.

Thanks for the comment and appreciate the feedback too. For some videos like this in the future, I’ll still probably keep them pretty quick. But I do want to mix in some new styles that are more relaxed to dive into the context behind what I consider some of my better images on a trip. Hoping to experiment with that type of thing soon. And most of these 100-400 shots, and other vids, were all between the R6 and R8. And I was leaning into cropping. I do have a recent video where I used this with the R7. But that was a rental for me. 400mm does feel a little short on FF for birds… so I’m not settled on this lens forever quite yet. I try not to push it too hard, or even notify the subscriber feed, but I do talk a bit more in depth on some of these topics on my podcast as it relates to lens experiences and monetization. There might be a few chapters in “2023 KZread Numbers, Small Channel (3.3k Subs)” that are of interest. But feel free to drop comments on those episodes too as I’m always looking for pertinent topics to spend some more relaxed time diving into.

It's a slow lens but it's fun to use on an RP and an r6, and its relatively sharp.. But I decided to go a different route and get the r10 for the 1.6 crop, instead of the 1.4x extender. The 100-400 works great on the r10, and the autofocus is even better than it is on the r6. Haven't had any issues with stability, even with just lens stability on the r10. If you get a chance I imagine it would be a lot of fun for you to try out, and even better the R7 with the extra stabilization and MP. If you do get around to it, I'll be looking forward to your review.

Thanks for watching and weighing in! I obviously haven't used either yet but that's what the consensus seems based on other vids I've seen - better to get the reach with the crop rather than with the extender. I'm really hoping to get hands on early year, I think it'll be really fun to compare.

I use this lens and the R7 and R5. I've just got the 200-800 and need to decide which to keep. But the little 400 is a stunner of a lens for its price. Nice review. ;)

@@DanYosua just had two days evaluating. Short story before I write a review. R5 is better with it than R7. Every shot not sharp which is not what I’m used to. Seems sharper around 600mm rather than at 800. But it’s light and easy to use. Definitely needs bright light to perform.
