Wildebeest Pistol!

I really like this gun! I use the term "beast" several times in this video, because that's what it is! Like a lot of gun nerds, I like guns for their mechanisms almost as much as for their downrange effects. And it's great to see people around the world coming up with their own designs, especially when they come out this nice! Check out Bernard's KZread channel and drop him some comments! / @impulseresearch

There's been a few. The Coonan is closely based on the 1911, and aims for a similar (enough) size, and then there's the LAR Grizzly pistols, which are like cutting two 1911s apart to then weld them together for making one longer front to back (in fact, that was what the prototype Grizzly was exactly). The Grizzly is pretty fat and bulky, but it's also intended for big and hefty cartridges like .45 Winchester Magnum and .50 Action Express, and it has some compatibility with normal 1911 parts. Then you've got the AMC Auto Mag, a short-recoil Magnum with a rotating bolt head and proprietary .44AMP cartridge, also the later AMT Automag, which is more like the common Browning short-recoil and slide setup (and made kind of poorly). The Wildey uses a rotating bolt with a gas piston, one which has an adjustable gasblock, and I always wondered why the Desert Eagle never had this as an option. For some which never entered production, I'm aware of a .357 Magnum one from I think Switzerland, which is essentially a big Luger if the toggle was sideways. There's the Magmatic, which I don't recall that much about actually, but I kind of wonder why that floundered. The earliest I can think of is the NAACO Brigadier, which was a very wacky post-WW2 military initiative in Canada, with the intent to make a sidearm which could reliably stop in a single shot. This manifested as a giant sized Browning Hi-Power chambered for .45 NAACO, which is virtually identical to the later .45 Winchester Magnum Unsurprisingly, most found this a difficult sidearm to handle, and the proposition of making a select-fire carbine conversion kit I don't think ever even came to prototyping.

This is basically a modification of the Browning action seen in most modern firearms, pioneered by John Moses Browning with the 1911. Instead of the standard Browning action, where the outside end tips up and allows the round to be pushed up into the barrel, this design is the reverse, where the inside end tips up and the round pushes down into the barrel. From the looks of things the result is remarkably less barrel flip combined with extremely low bore axis allowing for much better accuracy and faster follow up shots. A really well thought out design I must say.

As someone who loves cyberpunk fiction, I think this is awesome. As someone who loves new firearm designs, I think this is awesome. Earlier this week, a Forgotten Weapons video covered the newest version of the Laugo Alien, and I couldn't help wondering if a Browning-style tilting barrel could be flipped upside down. And this pistol seems to say yes, the recoil spring can go on top, with a barrel on the bottom that tilts upward. The most interesting part of this in a practical sense is the magazine capacity - it looks like the position where the magazine meets the chamber is very close to where that happens on a normal pistol. The Alien loses a round or two for its magazine size, thanks to the lower position of the barrel. This pistol seems to have a loading position very close to a normal pistol, allowing for magazines designed around feeding ammunition to a barrel overtop of the recoil spring. The most interesting part of the design is the location of the firing pin/fire control group. I would be very interested to see a disassembly video, but fully understand why that wouldn't happen.

  • @ImpulseResearch

Talk about what the origin of the design was, and detail how the parts work together as the gun cycles while you're taking it apart, pointing out the significant aspects of the design. Obviously, I'm entitled to none of that and you may not be comfortable going into that level of detail on this prototype that you've been working on for years. Perfectly understandable why you'd want to play things closer to the vest.

I was thinking in a tilting up barrel as a means to increase reliability on conventional designs. That has 2 advantages: one, you can feed the bullet strait to the chamber, no ramps required. Ideal for hollow points. Two, when extracting the case, its is pointing to the outside of the gun, not the inside like a traditional Browning action. That reduces the possibility of a "stove pipe" failure. Imagine a Beretta 92 built that way. The thing would be unstoppable.

He doesn’t have to do much he already has a manufacturers license to even make the thing in the first place and from there all he has to do is submit it to each state to see what they register it as. The gun looks like a normal pistol and not a PCC so he won’t have a drama selling it to the domestic market we have in Australia of pistol club members. To export it just one permit that doesn’t take long to fill out the hardest part is dealing with the ATF as their a pain the arse.
