    Great music in addition to a great video, and some nice cars of the 1970-1980s as a bonus.

    Denis,of all your many many amazing videos this is the one i keep comin g back to,I think mainly because when i got back into biking 15 or so years ago the section from Lenanne to Louisburgh was on the route of my first weekend away trip on my trusty Yamaha Virago750.I was so taken by this road that before the weekend was over I had traveled it 3 times in both directions and I have been back nearly every year since.Before this I didnt know the Sky road existed,but by golly I do now.....

    It's been about 25 years since I was in Connemara and it was by car. The Sky road looks awesome and that looks like the best direction to be travelling to get the best views. Some well kept Cortina's and Capri's there.

    +IRISHROVER There's some really epic roads around this area and the Connemara National Park. I'd highly recommend spending a full day touring this area, the WAW route through here is amazing, but there is more than just that, on my last trip through here in 2015 I ended up spending two days riding this area, t'was absolute magic..

    It's impossible to get figures for the total amounts spent on the 'Wild Atlantic Way' - brand consultants, signs, road widening, advertising? All this while people are stuck on hospital trollies as services collapse in the west of Ireland. Even more serious, the road widening and encouraging for motorvehicles and bikes (many diesel) is threatening our fragile environment.

    It's Thursday so I guess it's time to kick off the 1st vid of 2015. This weeks vid comes from a magic route from Wesport to Clifden via the Connemara National Park on the Wild Atlantic Way. Enjoy.. :)

    No rain on a motorcycle ride on the west coast of Ireland. You made a pact with the devil! As for the points re the WAW, I fully agree. Pure PR and marketing. But motorcycles aren't going to ruin rural Ireland, are they? Grants for motorways and industrial farming will.

    No rain, or maybe I just cut the wet bits out of the video lol? Motorbikes will definitely not ruin rural Ireland, if anything they'll help keep it alive ;) There's pros and cons to motorways but I agree, industrial farming is doing more harm than good, I'd spend more time growing my own organic food than I do on a motorcycle these days :)

    Very little industrial farming in Connemara. More concern should be salmon farming in estuaries and mouths of bays. Call it by any name you like but it is not good for marine environment

    You've proven in all your previous video's that you're a very disciplined and danger-aware rider (e.g., also in this video, by not overtaking these oldtimers whenever there's a car parked at the other side of the road). However this time you crossed a full with line, how naughty ;-) No, I'm joking, I fully "forgive" you : the white line was completely superfluous there !

  • @RoadTrooper

    @RoadTrooper

    Cheers Sudolea. I was a bit naughty. I think the solid white line was there because there was also a lay-by to the right approaching the corner which would be potentially dangerous for a car to overtake - in which case I would never have considered an overtake. This road is also a popular tourist route in summer so the white line would be there for good reason during times of heavy traffic. But on a motorbike, little traffic plus a long clear view around the corner ahead I judged I could do it safely, complet the maneuver and pull back in before coming alongside the lay-by. I also had time and clear view to see there were no occupants in or walking near the car, one of the benifits of the tall seating position of a F800GS. Sill as you pointed out I sill should not have done it. Hopefully I wont get a ticket by posting the evidence on YT ;)

    RoadTrooper If youtube should be used as some kind of evidence, it should on the contrary be used for proving you're an exemplary biker, to my feeling. You're sharpening, with these videos, my appetite to ride these ireland roads some time. However, your reaction above seems to suggest that in the summer, these roads are significantly busier ? What period of the year would you suggest to ride these roads (let's say, combining the best weather forecasts and the least traffic).

    sudolea July and August is the busiest time on the roads all across Europe, Ireland included. May and September is when I do my big rides, Ireland, europe, alps etc as I've always found them to have the best balance of good weather and low tourist traffic. Specifically for Ireland I'd March, May and 1st week of June and Sept. September generally sees the most settled weather. October is not bad either but it starts getting cold and wet by the end of Oct. Sept is the best bet, I'll be back on the WAW route again this Sept..

    While we have people on trollies in Castlebar and Galway hospitals, 10 million spent in Galway and May on signs for this 'Wild Atlantic Way' drive way ... who got all the money? And there is already pressure to widen the roads. More camper vans, more cars, more motorbikes. Won't be wild for long, will it.

  • @RoadTrooper

    @RoadTrooper

    Gar Sm I agree with you to a point. It's easy to argue that the Irish government could have, or should have spent the money on hospitals instead of roads. But if they had done that I've little doubt they’d have fu*^ed that up as the lot of 'em are a shower of useless pr$£ks with no idea of what it takes to live in the real world. On the flip side most of the money for the roads came as allocated road development funding from the EU and one could argue the widened roads allow more tourists who then spend much needed money into the Irish economy. As for “it won't be wild for long”. Again you're right, but only to a point. I’ve heard this argument before and I’ve seen a very similar scenario play out across the Alps, Pyrenees and many other natural areas. Part of Ireland's west coast will be ruined, it’s inevitable. But huge sections of the official route are not accessible to coaches, camper vans, HGV’s and even large cars. The Dingle Peninsula is officially off limits the coaches for e.g. There are far too many boreens, back roads, link roads, bog roads, unclassified roads and pot holed mountain roads hardly used since the British army build ‘em to get at rebels for the government to make a balls of. It is on these roads you’ll find the real wild atlantic way, and the vast majority of tourists will never venture onto these roads. The concept of “Bison futé” is completely alien to most, and long may it last. It’s the same deal in the Alps and Pyrenees etc. Most tourists will be herded into the “Authentic Irish Experience” utter bollox, Killarney being a classic example, and they will mostly only do so between May and September. For the rest of the year the only traffic will be the sheep, Paddy on his tractor and John-Joe the boy racer trying to impress his girlfriend who’ll inevitably kill himself and his lass by plowing dad’s car into the back of Paddy's tractor. The best, and in my view, the only way to actually do the whole WAW route is, and will remain, by foot, pony, bicycle, moped or motorcycle. The camper van and coach herds will have to make do with the widened N roads in their usual delusional search for rubber shamrocks and “authentic” Irish bollox. Long story short, I’m not too worried about Ireland's west being completely ruined. Some of it - yes, but most of it - no.

    I agree - though not about motorbikes. The green way from Westport to Achill island is great ... low key, cycling and walking. Someone is making a fortune out of the the Wild Atlantic Way. At a small junction near me there are 11 signs ... so who was paid to do that?

  • @RoadTrooper

    @RoadTrooper

    Gar Sm Hmm, Moone Boy's dad? There will always be some dodgy deals going on and there are many people unhappy about the WAW and how it's being operated for different reasons. But you could find out. Firstly the WAW sign is copyrighted (I think the WAW design was created by these guys www.cawleynea-tbwa.ie and copyrighted on behalf of their client) so there can only be a few companies "probably only one" who have the right to make the signs. And secondly those signs (as far as I am aware) can not be put in place without the local council's written premission, then someone from the council is directed to set up the signs. So, if you want to know why there are 11 signs in one location (which sounds mad) start at the local council office. You have a right to that info from the local council office, and you also have a right to complain and petition to have some or all signs removed based on any number of reasons. If the council refuses to help you then have the right to apply for free legal aid for advice on the matter.. If you can, send me a photo of the junction to denis.smyth@roadtrooper.com as I'd be interested in this myself.. But defo have a chat with the local council and go from there..

    Jaysus one thing that annoys me about this bleedin is people are always negative . No matter what that 10 million could lead to a lot more money from tourist revenue . The video is great take a look at the bright side of life will ya .
