I was there in 2010. It was spectacular. So much history! So many stories! I loved it. Different feeling, something more real and strangely familiar, yet not a dream.

This is a stunning film of the Ring of Kerry. I live on the Ring and I have seen scores of tourist videos, but this is the best I have ever seen. The footage from the bike cam is beautifully complimented by the drone and the stills are simply gorgeous. The weather is famously changeable in this part of South West Ireland, but when the sun shines the colours in the landscape are unforgettable. The southern part of the Ring of Kerry combines sea, sky, mountains and islands in wide vistas which you have captured perfectly. The music is a delight- all the better for not being the standard Irish traditional music which can feel heavy when the camera is moving so quickly. Finally, just to say the islands at the end of the film are the Skelligs which are seven miles off shore. The great Skellig (Skellig Michael) was home to a monastery for centuries and scenes from the last star war movie were shot there. Lastly, the Ring of Kerry is a 110 mile journey best done on a day between the months May and October when the light is perfect and the images live up to everything in this beautiful film. Congratulations on an amazing piece of work!

Just happened upon this video and so happy that I did..Thank you so much for this beautiful portrayal of my wonderful home county..I feel incredibly lucky to have been born in 'The Kingdom'.I recognise so many of those of the beaten tracks that you show on here but I never tire of seeing this most majestic of landscapes...There are many many beautiful places in the world that I have seen but nothing can or will ever compare to the place I call home.

It was a genuine treat to have visited. Looking back from 10 years ago,I have the urge to go back! The whole island makes me feel this way. I said jokingly 'hey, where's the realtor office?' In response 'what?! We're all trying to get off this rock and you Want live here??' Humor is key..cheers

I've driven the full ring no fewer than a dozen times as tourist - and my utmost priority is either keeping up or getting out of the way. Surprisingly, there are many places to pull over to make way for the faster ones. I find the best time to drive the ring of Kerry is very early in the morning. I'd leave about 30 mins before dawn in Killarney, and sometimes be to Sneem without seeing more than 2 cars. I travel to Ireland off season (the end of October being my little secret, since nothing beats Dublin on Halloween). I'm a pretty fast but courteous driver, and drive a Subaru WRX here in Canada so terrain and speed are nothing new - but I'm amazed with the skill of Kerry drivers. Mind you, I'm stuck in a crappy rental car (Nissan Micra or Renault Clio) doing 80 around corners no Micra was designed for, in rain and 90km/h winds, and I'll have someone come up from behind in a tall delivery van and when I yield to them, they're doing rally speeds. I like to think I know a lot about the ring's roads, corners, climbs, nuances - but driving a bakery van around the ring like that, you'd have to be Sebastien Loeb himself. As rustic as the ring can be, the roads are (almost all) in a perfect state. The paint is always visible too. A couple of gripes I have are the bicycles (how suicidal must you feel to ride a bike on the ring), the new EU funded road barriers (replacing the beautiful stone walls, but certainly safer) and graffiti. Every town's got some gobshite tagger, but their routine is a tourist's idea of heaven, and to see "Gerrys are stemers" or "Bjork is a huer" scrawled across an ancient stone fence is a bit heartbreaking. Shout out to Mr O'Sullivan of Sneem for letting me use the loo in his store last year - I believe my quote was, "I could have pished a hole through sheet metal". One way of knowing the population of a town in Kerry is by checking the roadside noticeboard about what the bingo draw is worth. If it's in the $ thousands -> big town. Oh, word of advice - get extra insurance when driving a rental around the ring. It's not just accidents, but the likelihood of scraping along branches or brush when pulled over. Tucking your right side wing-mirror in and instead doing a shoulder-check can give you a few precious inches of extra space to worm through tight spots. Rental companies in Ireland are no different from the rest of the world, with someone intent on finding a scratch that wasn't there (or was, you just didn't document it) upon return. With the extra insurance, you can throw them the keys to a smoldering heap and walk away with your reward points.

I go to this area twice a year and will continue to do so . To the outsider most people hear of the "ring of kerry" but the actual ring of kerry is fairly boring, you have to take time and plan your routes properly as roadtrooper has done. The 3 peninsulas below the ring of kerry are spectacular and less known. Again plan your route, go on street view and drop the yellow man on the single tracks and narrow coast routes as this will give you an idea of where to go. My suggestion is to stay self catering in kenmare for a week and each day go out for 5 hrs , 1 day for each peninsula and then whatever you fancy. At least at the end of the day you know you will be coming back to kenmare which had great pubs and food and not big like killarney. Priest leap from south to north a must and also the radar beacons for the irish aviation, full access at the top of a mountain. The only negative side is its 5hrs from dublin ( use the speed ferry ) and use the toll tunnel when leaving dublin even though it goes north first. Dublin trafiic is a big no no

  • @RoadTrooper

Couldn't agree more, the Ring of Kerry is a nice ride but far from the best, especially if on a motorbike. If you really want to see the best you can do it the easy way and get the satnav routes of the best routes in the south west as day tours using Killarney/Kenmare as a base. With over 200 poi's including photo stops, hotels, campsites, ring forts etc its the easiest and cheapest way to be assured of seeing it all. LOL, I have plenty of ideas. I run guided or self (SatNav) guided motorcycle day tours from Killarney and a custom route service. I have 8 routes beginning and ending in Killarney alone without leaving the West Cork/Kerry region ;) With just 5 days to play with you're not going to be able to do all the best roads/routes and I suppose a lot depends on what type of roads you're after, but I'd certainly suggest at the very least exploring the 3 main peninsulas in the area, Dingle, the Iveragh Peninsula/Ring of Kerry and the Beara Peninsula/Ring of Beara. The main tourist routes are already starting to fill up with the usual tourist traffic, but if you're on a motorbike there are tons of incredible roads off the beaten track that few tourists venture into as the roads are small and windy, impossible for coaches, bad for large cars, but perfect for motorbikes ;)

Hi Ian, Ireland is indeed good for camping, at least it is in the south, not sure about the north as the UK laws take a different view i believe. Basically you can camp just about anywhere in the republic that is not private or government owned land. The national parks also have restrictions like no fires or parties which might scare the deer, birds etc and the park rangers will be well pissed off if you damage any trees, fauna etc or leave your rubbish behind ;) In the national parks if you keep it quiet, dont light a fire and dont make a mess you'll be fine and no one will bother you. Most farmers will let you camp on their land also - but you most definetly MUST ask their permission, ye dont want to be camping in a field where a farmer intends to mate a couple of friskey cows with a short fused 2 ton bull with full bags or where he's going to plow it up at 4am on a massy ferguson with flaying steal bits. It's also good manners to ask and most farmers will be quite happy to point you to a field they're not using. If ye just use your head and ask when in doubt you'll be fine wild camping here.

wow, is the ring of kerry route got the highlands included in the route?

  • @RoadTrooper

Hi Mario, my self guided satnav routes include the highlands, the Iveragh Peninsula section is split into 2 x 200km routes, so you'd need 2 days to cover the Iveragh Peninsula. 98% of tourists just travel the Ring of Kerry which is the main coastal road and is big enough to take coaches, camper vans, large family cars etc. The highland roads are mostly one track which is why most traffic avoids them, the coaches can't go there, but the highlands are perfect for motorcycles ;) All the SGT routes of Ireland's south west are designed for motorcyclists who can take advantage of their small size to really explore the region on the small back roads where you'll see the really stunning views and interesting places.

5 of us on road bikes are heading to Killarney were we are staying for the bike fest at the end of this month. We would like to see the bike fest but also see some of the area before heading north to Galway and Westport. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The Ring of Beara would always be my 1st choice, far less traffic, more scenic, and more enjoyable then the Ring of Kerry or Dingle Peninsula. It's a good 6 hour ride-out but it's one of the best, if not the best rides you'll get in Ireland. Most of the guys using my routes would say Beara was the highlight of their tour ;) maps.app.goo.gl/jtdiu23a4QVzMUM29

If you get good weather you wont regret it, I've a video of Beara here - ( kzread.info/dash/bejne/gJmNl9OOXZS3osY.html ) Aim to stop for lunch/dinner at Helen's Bar at Kilmackkillogue Pier, when in season you can get a bowl of the best (Kenmare Bay) muscles in Europe there while sitting on the pier, it's a stunningly beautiful place and famous with local bikers. Another good place to get lunch is at Dursey Island cable car at the very end of the peninsula, in summer there's a chip van selling local fresh caught fish/crab/lobster&chips, great views there too - maps.app.goo.gl/5pYDMybGW5s9MRwE8
