Tom Kelly this is how I functioned throughout my years in school. There is something so useful and user friendly about most wiki articles. I usual get most of the bigger picture info from wiki and just slap on a few of the references I never really read. Then just glaze over legitimate sources to make sure the wiki info more or less checked out.

Used to get so frustrated in class when teachers would say "Wikipedia isn't a reliable source" when they don't understand just how much of Wiki's resources go into fact checking & refreshing their entire dictionary, millions of edits a minute. It was appalling to hear someone I'm supposed to learn from not understand the basics of how a modern dictionary works.

  • @zachmiller9175

    1. Wikipedia is not a dictionary. It is an open source encyclopedia. 2. The reason Wikipedia will never be acceptable as an academic source is because of how susceptible it is to temporary vandalism. it can be edited by anyone and it can take a while for vandalism to be found, making it by nature not 100% reliable. That's why you should use Wikipedia articles as a jumping off point to do your actual research using the linked sources at the bottom of the article. Your teachers aren't wrong on this one, and it's not just Wikipedia, the same applies to any open source information. Acceptable sources should be peer reviewed BEFORE being posted publicly not after as is the case for Wikipedia.

This is certainly true for current politics, but we're not "imposing" those sources for personal reasons. We do it because it is a neutral policy to maintain them in the article over sources from dubious websites than might not be trustworthy enough, regardless of our political spectrum. That's why CNN receives a positive prose in its Wikipedia article in contrast with Fox News.

Then later when somebody notices the error on Wikipedia it gets corrected but whatever you have written was not making you looking like a fool for misquoting. One great thing about Wikipedia I discovered recently is, that it is a great source for translations of scientific or technical names. It allows you to go too the English page of the thing you are looking for and just take a look at the page in the language you wish to translate to. If you think: "But couldn't you just use a dictionary?" you obviously have never tried to translate the difference between a rocket motor and a rocket engine to German where the word for engine is motor...

If such a reliable source existed, I would be glad to "fix" it. Often the debates that go on in articles are the most valuable part as you really understand the contention in the subject. Read, question, research. Follow the references. Understand the limitations of studies. Any reference to a study will have the same problem. Learn a bit about bias and statistics. Understand political sides etc.
