Wiesel AWC: Germany's Mini-KillerTanks,Small But Lethal

Wiesel AWC in the Bundeswehr's inventory is manufactured by Rheinmetall Defence and can be flown into battle. It has seen action in Somalia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo and Afghanistan.
The mini tank's purpose was to give West German paratroopers armoured mobility upon landing and can be airlifted as underslung cargo or carried inside a CH-53 transport helicopter.

An American friend of mine once told me the story of how he, as a tank soldier on an M1 Abrams of the US armed forces, was supposed to carry out a manoeuvre with German units. They stood right next to a field and waited for the German Wiesel vehicles. But they didn't come and so they waited and kept looking out. At one point he sat down sideways on the bonnet to get some sun and a few minutes later he felt a hand on his leg. He thought it was a mate and told him to stop. But the mate shouted that it wasn't him. So he opened his eyes and in front of him he saw a German soldier sitting on his Wiesel and patting him on the leg. He said he had never been as shocked as he was at that moment, because the Wiesel broke through all the surveillance paraments and parked right next to his tank. It also turned out that the Germans were there long before the Americans and were having fun sneaking up on them.

The US army also did something similar. They pitted small buggies with ATGMs against a few tanks. The ATGM buggies were more effective and safer than the tanks. Tanks are only there for the direct fire support capability. Maybe you want a bunker down or you want a building gone. Then tanks are useful. But for most cases, their really not.

@@honkhonk8009 If you look at the statistics from the First Gulf War, Bradley's with TOW's got the vast majority of kills against Iraqi tanks, even though the Bradley's were embedded with large numbers of Abrams. Even in perfect conditions for tank engagements, ATGM's proved to be a far superior weapon system compared to conventional tank cannons. The war in Ukraine is highlighting the truth of this with ATGM's and new weapon systems in the form of cheap, mass-produced drones kamikaze drones. The role of tanks on the battlefield is only becoming more and more niche as they are rapidly outpaced by different means of warfare.

As a long-time Bundeswehr soldier, I have had the pleasure of riding on a Wiesel several times! Unfortunately we didn't have our own Wiesel in our armored infantry unit. The Wiesel are really strong in uneven terrain and provide very strong fire support for the infantry. With its light weight, it would be exactly the right support vehicle for Ukraine, because the Wiesel doesn't get stuck in the mud. He is in no way inferior to the Marder armored personnel carrier in terms of firepower and is quite capable of disabling larger armored vehicles! With his TOW anti-tank missile he can even disable and destroy battle tanks. I was there live when a Wiesel with his 20 mm automatic machine cannon split a house in half during a maneuver in Sweden. It's a shame that the Wiesel will probably be replaced by the Boxer family and will henceforth be seen as a light wheeled tank.

I served in the US Army as Recon and we use small tracked vehicle M114A1E1 it had a 20mm auto canon made in Germany it fire a round that was about foot long. Outstanding gun. It did a good job as a Scout vehicle. Its only draw back was the gasoline GMC engine.

The USMC had fielded the M50 ONTOS back in the 1960's six 106mm recoilless rifles on a small platform with wide tracks made it an ideal tank killer. Unlike TOW when the backblast gave away your position the vehicle could shoot and scoot and the ammo was cheap compared to TOW. A 50 cal. spotter rifle helped get the range so the kill probabilities were improved. My company gunny was an ONTOS gunner in Nam and noted that the Cong hated it.

TK were armed with heavy machine guns and 20mm small-caliber cannons. Polish tankers used them in 1939 in the 'September Campaign'. Small, difficult to catch and good for ambushes and recon.

Cost of the vehicle and cost of operating the vehicle would be main factors for its popularity. Is it a gasoline based vehicle or a diesel based one? Its operating range and top speed are also not mentioned. In today's era of drone based weaponry, where main battle tanks are also easy prey, i wonder whether this vehicle would be useful? Maybe it would be useful against 3rd world nations which are less industrialised or materially weak.

0:18 Naahhh... the biggest Tank, the world has ever seen, is the PzKfw "Maus", wich the germans build in 1943/1944. The P1000 is just an concept art and everybody can draw a big tank and say, here... it weights 1000 tons and look, its driven by a crew of velociraptors!. Furthermore, the germans also have drawn the P2000, wich has double the mass of the P1000, so the P1000 isnt even the biggest drawn tank of the third reich. i dont know how legit your claim is here.
