Still Muay Thai technique of throwing punches is totally different from boxing, so I doubt your punches suck, if you knock people out with them, then they don´t. In my case, I´m a volume puncher, cause I´ve got to face it, I´ve got pillow hands (lol) cause I focus too much in the form and technique, and as Shane stated, I also focus too much in the speed... My style is overwhelming the other guy with punches in bunches, I just need the power.

His traditional boxing position drives me crazy. I mean if you're just boxing I guess it makes sense, but I'm looking at that lead leg and absolutely salivating. There's a reason that almost every mma fighter is a lot closer to peekabo style with hips almost squared. He's begging for a leg kick or a single leg.

I was chopping wood, for the first time, and I was hitting like a maniac because I wanted the wood to split open with one hit, but I was missing a lot, and then my uncle told me to concentrate on the tip of the axe instead of the whole edge of the axe, my accuracy incressed so much it was crazy, so what I did was to imagine the target and a red dot as the very tip of the blade, and everything around me as darkness, this works so well, it's insane do this: imagine 2 red dots, your middle finger knuckle and the target, try to connect them

It's sort of similar with learning HEMA (namely swords), the most important part is actually down from the tip and we put two bits of tape on the blade to show that key area. It's so useful because otherwise you instinctively think the last 6-10" is the most effective part. I mean it can obviously still cut but a good defender will turn you away much easier.

This is really useful for people who aren't naturally athletic or don't have a sense or instinct for fighting. The "don't be a hippy" tip was especially useful because I would intentionally rotate my hips first, thinking that the power would travel to my upper body on its own, but it took me a long time to realize that I also had to voluntarily engage my core, shoulder and arms all the way up to the tip of my knuckle.

I'm so pleased I came across this video. I thought the efficacy of my punches was getting worse the more I trained. The more I was made to focus on my technique and stance, and not to recoil my punches too quickly. I know they are all valid but I just felt I was over-burdened with the 'how to' that the 'doing' always felt off. No matter if I was told that I was doing it right, I felt I wasn't getting much from it. Martial arts is so nuanced that I think it's important to give explanations in full, if not, and you're like me, you just become more confused.

I like tip #4 on principle, but I have a few extra bits to throw in concerning weight distribution. -- CENTER OF GRAVITY If you maintain a perfect 50/50 weight distribution when throwing a punch, it will teach you proper foot position. If you want to lean forward and really put 2000% into your punch, fine -- go for it. But your lead foot has to come forward as you lean in. You need to maintain the even weight distribution. I am not knowledgeable on fighting history, but I believe it was Joe Frasier who had a technique he described as a "controlled fall" to help him with reach speed and power with some of his punches. He would, without changing body or foot position, lift his lead foot slightly and let himself tip forward as he punches. His weight would create a lot of extra force behind the punch, and he was a dangerous striker because of it. He would then catch himself on his lead foot to regain 50/50 weight distribution, rather than stumble forward because his feet were out of position. What I am basically saying here is that it's OK to shift your weight distribution off of 50/50 as long as your feet are in the right position to instantly regain that 50/50. Don't lean over your lead foot, just "fall forward" instead. -- There is a difference between how it feels to land a punch and miss a punch. If you are landing, you'll start leaning into your punches to help correct your balance -- roughly half of the force of your strike is coming back down your arm into your shoulder, tipping your balance backward. If you are missing, you'll start not leaning in at all to help stay on balance... but this means when you land, you won't quite have the power you normally would. Watch the video. Look at Shane's punches when he's striking Bob vs when he's striking air. He leans into shots just a little when he expects that they will land. We all do that. When Shane says to maintain 50/50 balance between your feet, he really means (imo) don't lean so much that if you miss you stumble. If your lead foot didn't come forward with a power punch, you will ALWAYS take a late step after a missed hard punch. 50/50 is better than leaning too far. It is better to hit a little softer than to miss, stumble, and get decked. But there is a small degree of leaning forward you must do if the shot will land and you want maximum power. The leaning is minute and you shouldn't feel off balance throwing it at empty air. You should feel weight shift, as the punch completes, onto your lead foot just slightly. It will instantly vanish, as it was only momentum and not foot position that caused the shift. -- Subscribe to this man. He's smart, his technique is clean, and he's a good teacher.

*Laughs* You just reminded me of a few things my couch tells me.. Relax, don't over think, watch your hands. He said I overthinking too much which causes me to go slower and focus too much on my form. Thank you for this video, it makes it easier to understand what he means now.

Great. I follow and watch you r instructive videos whenever I get a chance. Tip 2, 3 and 5 were greatly explained in taichi. The concept of passage of chi is concept 2. The concept of open and close is tip 3. And tip 5 is Fa Jin. Tip 5 also explained in other ancient martial arts including Karate and Wushu ( keeping the balance). Tip 4 was best explained by non other than Bruce lee. There are much to learn from old school but you are teaching it according to the new culture. Great work Shane.

Your 'dumbing down' is really going back to basics. If you're good at defensive punching but your punches suck, you've just not learned to punch properly. You've learned to cycle before you could walk.

Great channel and I like your casual approach to sending us to the website. $7 a month is a great price as well. I have just started MMA training, literally had one lesson and I am already totally hooked. I'll be taking you up on that 14 day trial and no doubt will be a subscriber. Stoked for you getting this training business going.

Shane, your still sightly telegraphing your own punches just noticed it at 11:53 its your hind leg, its a dead giveaway. You shift your weight from your front leg to your back leg and it moves back maybe a quarter centimeter before you punch

Great tips about not focusing so much on defence for beginners who can't even get power in their punches yet. One tip I don't agree with is keeping the non-punching arm loose, because I believe that's how some fighters (including myself) have DISLOCATED their non-punching shoulder, from the huge swing of the whole body, and the arm gets left behind. I contract the whole body when one punch lands; and once every limb is stationary and nothing flapping behind, then I relax the whole body and reset for the next punch.

One night I was at a party.. I had lost my watch and as I nervously gazed around the room looking for it, I noticed a man was standing on it across the room. He was speaking to what I assumed to be his girlfriend when I noticed he started yelling at her. She looked uneasy and said something to him and then all of a sudden he tossed his drink on her and shoved her to the ground. That was the last straw.. I immediately ran over and punched him in the face. As I helped the woman to her feet, I said one thing to the man and im sure it echoes through his very soul to this day... I said "Not tonight buddy.. Not on my watch."
